i've been following your career for 10 years (since i was in high school) and you never cease to amaze me or warm my heart. you seem like a genuinely nice and charming person. a true gothic renaissance man. i'd love to meet you one day. when will you be coming to toronto? :)
Personally, I love ravens because of their deep ties to Norse mythology. If it were me, I would have mounted two of the birds to the back of the throne, to act as my own Huginn and Muninn, Odin's ravens.
I love taxidermy, but I've got to say laws prohibiting the sale of a lot of modern taxidermy and especially endangered species are definitely a good thing.
It was done back when EVERY MAN wore a hat and EVERY HAT had a feather in it. Birds were being hunted into extinction because of the hat industry. But I do believe the law as it presently stands goes overboard.
Well that's just stupid, if there is a season to hunt them, why the hell not use the skins for something? Its actually kind of disgustingly wasteful. Also, yay Voltaire replied to my comment! Crows are considered a pest species in the UK, so shooting them is basically encouraged.
+Something Dreadful No, you're thinking of Starlings! Crows are not a pest & shouldn't be encouraged to be hunted. Crows & Ravens are two of the most intelligent animals in the wild, even more so than chimps, as studies have it.
Hey Voltaire! First time I have ever commented on one of your videos. I just had to tell you about what happened recently. A couple of days ago we found a dead crow in our yard under our tree. It looks as though it died of natural causes. So I called the local Fish and Wildlife office to see if I could keep it and take it to a taxidermist. I have to go through some red tape, but it seems that soon I will have a lovely bird of my own.
I was looking at those crows and magpies on Etsy but the Migratory Birds Act was making me nervous about purchasing them. Thanks for making this episode to clear things up! It's also great to know they weren't killed just for the sake of taxidermy.
It's 2023 and YT showed me this video with you and ReeRee, so I watched it. 😮 What a surprise, that you went to Frankfurt! It's only about 3 hours away from my home city! 😂
Thank you so much for being who you are Voltaire! My favorite time today was watching your episode with my sister and dad, you immediately made our day better! Keep up the terrific work!
I love birds I'm drawn alot to the colorful, but ravens and magpies are an exception the are so intelligent and the most beautiful black that one could imagine.
While I am sad to see this show end for now, I am incredibly glad it existed, and I will definetly make use of some of the things I've learned, as soon as I am able to move out of my student apartment and into an actual home of my own. Thank you for this wonderful series, Voltaire!
I have Crows and Ravens right though the yr.Who I give my heathy left overs too. They know me well.I even had one who was old die in are yard he was in the apple tree for days and died underneath it.It was a very sad day.I took it to a Bird Sanctuary they’re going to display it there, they told me I couldn’t have it but I could not bury it, It was so beautiful.
I'm a Brazilian fan. I am very surprised by your commitment and dedication to making these videos, which need a lot of work and money, I admire you and your videos a lot.
Thank you for doing what you do. I've had high functioning depression for a large portion of my life so I couldn't chase my dreams and be like you out of mental instability. If I could this would be my way of coping with it: decorate my house with Ravens and skulls! Please never give up Mr. Voltaire. You give me reason to draw breath.
I was about to say Nevertold had a taxidermied crow in their window display last time I was there. I coveted it very much indeed, and I'm sure others did, too. I'm glad they're protected, honestly.
Since you were interested to know about all the types of ravens and crows of all over the world, you might want to check, one bird from the crow and is also one of the smallest one, the "Quiscalus mexicanus" but in Colombia is called "Maria Mulata" we even have a sculpture in my home town Barranquilla...
Amazing backyard with the peacocks!! Those skulls were perfectly placed. Gave me some ideas. Seeing all that taxidermy brought back memories growing up. My parents luv it and decorated the house with turtles, bobcats, pheasants, scorpions, snakes and frogs. My friends were always scared to come into my house. But our legacy does come spanish brujas and lobos. It was only natural to be surrounded by protective loving animal spirits.
I guess the laws were in response to the mass extinctions of birds that people perpetrated, like the Eskimo Curlew and Passenger Pigeon. Those species used to be very prolific, and now they're gone.
I actually didn't expect to see any acquired specimen as I was just going to settle with your existing awesome decor and roundabout display of american clerk hospitality. Above and beyond, Voltaire. Above and beyond.
If you ever come to Belgium, you should come see this bar called Le Cercueil. The tables are real coffins, drinks and decor are extra spooky, and for an extra euro you can drink inside a skull glass!
I'm very impressed by taxidermy skills, but the eyes often unnerve me too much. My sister has taxidermy, and it's all antique (and includes a 'derpy fox') but I feel like the eyes are watching me. I guess the appeal for some is that it's kinda creepy, but it's a bit too creepy for me! However I'm fine with skulls and bones, so I have those instead. I'd like to get some really realistic reproduction skulls, because making convincing skulls is an art-form in itself. I have a mated pair of crows that hang out with me at lunchtimes at college, so no need for taxidermy crows, anyway XD
I have two lovely jewelry items from Billy of BlueBayer- a white bronze eagle talon and white bronze raven skull pendant- they’re so gorgeous and affordable in that alloy. Highly recommend shop
I've always loved crows and ravens.. They're so set in their families, I'd never dream of keeping one as a pet .. but I'm planning on making some friends this next fall. I just need to figure out what their favorite treats are ..
Awesome video! Glad to see that you enjoyed your time in Australia and watching the Flying Foxes overhead with Ree Ree. They are such beautiful creatures that's for sure!🦇🇦🇺🦇🇦🇺🦇
Man, when you say you want some crows you really want some crows! You went all out! I love how you give so many options and ideas. You're so creative! You really inspire me.
great to see you here down under talking with reeree i live on gold coast only a couple hours away from brisbane and travel there alot i'm glad you got to experience some of our willdlife including birds and bats fruit bats aren't loved by some people they can carry disease, they are large very noisy and eat fruit and shit on very thing most, birds, bats and other native wildlife are protected so in australia we don't have much taxidermy and wet samples except in museums or universities not private collectors, really enjoy your series wish we had access to stuff you do in the states, no halloween here.
Chicken bones? That's my jam! Made some necklaces out of them in my teens. Crudely done, didn't know about peroxide treatment back then. Awesome to see something so simple yet effective get a nod on this show! :D
And I actually stumbled across ecclectica in Brisbane when I was traveling throughout Australia early this year. I loved getting to see those bats flying in nature as well! In Cairns the trees in the town square were lined with thousands of fruit bats. One of the coolest things I saw on the trip (which actually says a lot, as there are numerous incredible sights down under) :D
I just finished binge-watching Gothic Homemaking. This webseries is amazing. The dedication and effort you put into it it's incridible... the diy ideas you show here are extremely creative. I absolutely love this show and i'm mesmerized by how your apartment is getting more and more gorgeous each episode. I honestly hope this isn't the last episode of gothic homemaking. I understand it must cost quite a lot to make a series like that while you're not making any money out of it bc its on youtube, a free plataform. But this show is great and not only gave me so many ideas on how to decorate my room but also got me rolling on the floor laughing at some of the jokes. I definitely look foward to new episodes! I'd love too see your ideas for a gothic bed and a gothic kitchen! Congratulations on the amazing work in this series!!
Wow, I never would have thought that birds were so hard to come by. I went to a nature summer camp on a bird and moose reservation as a kid (I'm not kidding). Even they had several taxidermy birds, for educational purposes, in this one room upstairs. I always loved that room and thought that, if I ever bought a taxidermy animal, it would probably be a bird... And, thank you for including instructions on how to clean bones! So helpful! (I'll be impossible to live with now...)
There is a witchcraft market in Mexico city where they sell ravens not sure about taxidermy ones but here in Mexico you can pretty much find anything that is outlawed in the U.S.
I find your episode so cool ! and very nice that you always search for some vegan options, without judgments, without laughing about the people who prefer not having real animals for decoration ! thanks for all those videos and great ideas !
The best part about my Thanksgiving was Gothic Homemaking :) A lonely day, so watching this made me feel like I was just hanging out with you, the ravens, and the crows.
@@TheLairofVoltaire Where there's a will, there's always a way. My daughter asks me every time I want something new.. "Where are you gonna put it, there's no room!" And I always respond with "Oooh, I'll make it fit.." and somehow I always do. =^_^=
With this episode, this could help me with my personal project. Two years after the tragic death of my dog, my mom show me the place where she died, and her body was still there but only cover with her skin intact. Ahhhh The Wilde Collection!!!😍 I stumbled across them when I was doing poster rounds for my job and decided to pop in. Saying that my jaw hit the floor when I first walked in is truly an understatement. I fell in love at first sight!!!
For the two pendants from Michael's that you put on the small frame I recommend putting small glass eyes in the empty circle part! I have both as necklaces and the eyes really make them look great. I got the eyes I used at Michael's as well but they don't seem to have them anymore as far as I've seen but I'm sure they're an easy find somewhere else!
While not necessarily into Gothic (or really into much of anything, as my 'style' is more eclectic), this series you've been working on is well-filmed and edited, and I've been highly enjoying watching the episodes I've watched so far. You've got a fun personality it seems, and it's fun watching an American Pickers-style show, except it's more about Gothic related pieces. Cool to watch, and look forward to seeing more. :)

Voltaire clearly doesn't believe in minimalist design.
Yeah, fuck that! LOL!

spent hours of my day off binge watching Gothic Homemaking
Ahhhhhh, love this episode! Thank you for coming to Australia and inviting me to be on the show! It is such a huge honour!

ps: in America there is a crow hunting season... BUT IT'S ILLEGAL TO STUFF THE CROWS??? I think the law could use some reviewing.
Well that's just stupid, if there is a season to hunt them, why the hell not use the skins for something? Its actually kind of disgustingly wasteful. Also, yay Voltaire replied to my comment!
Crows are considered a pest species in the UK, so shooting them is basically encouraged.
