I can't tell you how many times as a kid I would have sat at the stools and ordered food. My mother worked there at as young girl, then at Kress. It was a fantastic store with so much to offer and so much fun! Thank you so much, Jordan for bringing these memories and all the great times I had there!
In the early 70's , We had 5 kids in our family. Every week we would get our 50 cent allowance and ride our bikes perhaps 2 miles, but felt like 20 and we would end up at the Woolworths dept. Store in Hanford, CA. We spent every penny and came home with most of those toys in that museum. I truly enjoyed this vlog. Thank you jordan!

@Bonnie Brown I know what you mean. My grandmother would take me there every Saturday for lunch and we'd always order the Salisbury Steak. I'd get a 45 (record) with my allowance and my grandmother would buy me a package of cashews to munch later in the afternoon. The building still stands to this day & I can't go past it without saying, "There's where the old Woolworth's 5 & Dime stood." Ahhh....the memories! Jordan brought them all back in a rush! Love his videos!
@@qtbrniis , the one we went to was in Atlanta Ga. My mother and my grandparents and great grandparents lived up near Atlanta back in the 40's , 50's , 60's , and 70's. I remember going shopping with my mother and my aunt Cheryl in Atlanta and we'd go to Woolworths . I remember them having the white and green striped awnings in front of the store . I was just a little girl when I went . Then we would go over to Riches to go shopping . Of course sadly things have changed a lot in Atlanta since way back then . We all moved away from that area in the early 70's . I don't know when Woolworths shut down here , but that will always be great memories especially at Christmas time .
I hope New York City needs to open a Woolworth Museum which is going to be in the iconic Woolworth Building which is in Lower Manhattan, and it will have the same memorabilia as it was in this former museum in Bakersfield, CA.
What you said was a napkin dispenser is actually a toaster. I love your enthusiasm for all things of age. I believe you are an old soul!
Luckily I researched this before responding. It is, indeed, a toaster. I had never seen anything like this, but evidently used for its looks as people sitting at the lunch counter could see the equipment used.

Had my first job at Woolworth, back in the 70's.
I was a 70s kid and I had one of those punching balloons. I remember my grandma taking me to Woolworths.
WOW, Jordan, does this bring back wonderful memories and I thank you for exploring this museum and posting this for your fans. I saw the Woolworth map of Texas and we grew up shopping at the one in Dallas. My mom would let me have free reign of the store while she went down the street to shop for boring things. The three things I remember the most are the pet dept. where I bought several canaries, a hamster, and a turtle, the record dept. where they would actually play your 45 rpm to check for scratches, and the lunch counter. They made the best toasted turkey sandwiches with fries and a vanilla malt. Really good times. Thanks again.
I used to love to go to Woolworths. I used to work at a Broadway store next door to a Woolworths and I used to eat at the lunch counter there just about every day. People are always so nice and friendly. I miss that place

As a kid in the 60's, I always spent my 10 cent allowance at Woolworth's. I remember the lunch counter, vending machines, photo booths and all that stuff. Love that you are able to get into places we can't! Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Jordan!
I have great memories involving Woolworths Department Store. My grandmother use to treat me as a kid before we would go see a movie. We would get our candies there.

Woolworths in Australia are all supermarkets but up until the 1990's we also had Woolworths variety department stores as well.
They stocked just about every kind of homeware item you could imagine.
Darrin Lawton I am in Australia the Woolworths here are known as supermarkets mainly food with a few homewares. I had never seen Woolworths variety department stores what part of Australia were those stores. Thanks 🙂
I've lived in Sydney all my life and Woolworths had variety department stores in suburbs all over Sydney.....my ex-wife worked at the store in Bankstown square in the mid 80s.
At some point I believe the Woolworths variety stores were rebranded or absorbed into the Big W chain.
Of course the Woolworths name was retained for the supermarkets.
Coles also had a chain of variety stores as well until they also closed some time in the early to mid 80s.
I guess each State had different shops. I worked for Coles and we had variety department stores they didn’t close shops but they did change the stores which became supermarkets with limited homewares. Sadly things did change it was nice to be able to grab whatever you needed in one place. Thank you for your reply.🙂
What a nice walk down memory lane ! My Grandma loved Woolworths & took us when we visited her in Boston. I received the loom at 5 & the chemistry set at 8 & later a microscope at 9 she got there.
I just thought of it now, perhaps these things from my early childhood left me to study Science & work in microbiology. Wow, goes to show you even someone you loose from your life at age nine can make a difference.
I loved Woolworth they had all kinds of unique items. There are no stores like the old 5 & dimes. It's a shame now all store have the same crap. I miss them. Great video👍. Thank you. Happy Holidays🎅🎄.
Oh the memories this vlog invoked in me. I have some Christmas decorations from Woolworths with the original packaging that my mom passed down to me when I got married. I will be getting them out today when I start decorating for Christmas. Thanks so much Jordan for a special vlog!

Wow. Memories. My mother use to work the makeup counter at Woolworth's way before I was even born. The soda counter was cool. You could get ice cream floats and stuff. Jah, sweet boy. He is my fav. Hi Jordan, WHAT A JOY, a lovely trip down Memory Lane. I was so sad when Woolworths went, it was a fabulous store which had it all and ALL at reasonable prices. Woolworths had everything from cutlery to pipe cleaners. I have just been going round our old store in my head after watching this. I still have a couple of old 1970's paper Christmas decorations which I bought from there and just keep now as a memory. Big fuss for the Jahster. Great vlog Jordan.
This was so cool. It shows why you are so good at this, research & persistence. It would have been a good video just from the outside, but it turned into a super special vlog.
I remember the Woolworths here in Niagara Falls Ontario Canada. I loved the lunch counter and can remember my Mom taking me for those hamburgs. It was on Queen Street and next door to a similar store "Kresge's" Fond memories of buying little trinkets there when I first started getting an allowance.Thanks for the vlog and for taking me back in time, Jordan.

This was great walking down memory lane. I worked the lunch counter when I was 16-17 and loved every minute of it. The loom you talked about was for making pot holders. As a kid , my first Baseball cards , Books 45's, LP'S & cassettes were all purchased ( or pocketed ! ) at a New York City Woolworths . They had , everything.
Hey wow, really neat how they let you inside to see what was left of the museum! It made my day to see that Monkees 45 in the display case, too. And when I hear the word "Oxnard", I immediately associate it with the band Dr. Know. I dunno why, but I just do maybe cuz of Brandon Cruz.
Congrats on 1200 Jordan, I used to love going to woolworths with my mother in Waltham, MA when I was a little kid. Every time I would get a slice of apple pie at the counter with a huge scoop of vanilla icecream on top. The nice lady that was always there would give me a free giant glass of milk. She said thank you for always cleaning up after myself & being polite. Once they retired the lunch counter I knew the store was screwed. It was replaced with Family Dollar & instead of going in every couple days we would go there maybe twice a month.

When I was growing up in Santa Barbara we had a Woolworth, a Newberry, Rexall, and Thrifty's. All of them had lunch counters and the same sort of items. I remember buying all my 45s at Woolworth and all my sewing patterns and fabrics and such at Newberry and although the banana splits at Woolworth were awesome the best deal was a three scoop cone for 15 cents at Thrifty.. Such great memories. Then you Jordan!!

Same thing here in Ventura..... They were originally on Main St.
I worked at Thrifty's on State St when Piccadilly square was next door and the one in Oxnard at center point.
@@qhorson2555 as I was only 14 when we moved to Arizona I hadn't worked yet. My Dad was a DJ at KIST and he worked at Silverwoods on State. I did volunteer at the Devereaux School in Isla Vista just so I could ride and exercise the Horses. Such freedom then in the 60s could ride the Horses all up and down the beach.

Awesome vlog Jordan. I was a woolworth's kid my mom worked the lunch counter in the parma ohio store when she could not get a sitter I would go to work with her and sit at the lunch counter coloring in my underdog coloring book until my grandfather got home from work. Loved woolworth's used to get everything there . They always had the best Halloween costumes.

As a 15 year old kid working my first "real" job across the street from the closed Woolworth's store, I watched the workers destroying the store. I walked across the street and after much argument, I convinced this elderly man on a ladder, in white overalls, to give me one of the original signs from the late 1800s.
I still have it. I love it. It's one of my favorite things. Thanks for this! I enjoyed it!😀👍

I really enjoyed this. A piece of Americana which has virtually disappeared. They were not uncommon in Toronto, where I am from.
The First Class envelope you pointed out in the museum's display case was given to all store locations. It was for correspondence between stores and the main office in New York. In the upper left corner was a line to place the store number.
My late Aunt was one of the female managers who were actually not actually called a manager but another term. They were treated poorly long hours, low pay and an inappropriate title.

My great aunt retired from Woolworth in the 80's and closed in 1994...it's now a Best Buy. The last 400 stores closed in 1997. This tour brings back childhood memories.

There is also a Woolworth in greensboro NC that is now a active civil rights museum because On February 1, 1960, four African American college students sat down at a lunch counter and politely asked for service. Their request was refused. When asked to leave, they remained in their seats. Their passive resistance and peaceful sit-down demand helped ignite a youth-led movement to challenge racial inequality throughout the South. I have been there quite a few times.

Hello Jordan ! ~ I do think everyone misses Woolworths now their gone ! ~ We had a really big store in Bradford were I live ~ It was built on 4 or 5 levels ! ~ I have great memories about this store ... The goods that they sold as well as the classic architecture of this amazing building !
But strangely the one I dream* about is a very large Woolies that was based on the on the sea front in Morcambe - Which was 12 - 15mins drive below the famous Blackpool !
This Wooworths was massive ! Size of a football pitch ~ Bigger maybe ! ~ A giant square ! ~ It sold everything ! Items for the toursts and of course items for the people that lived in Morcambe ~ When you were inside and were paying at the tills(the big clunky ones) ~ You looked out through those giant massive glass windows they had and just by the road were the normal traffic + the Tram tracks where the famous Blackpool trams ran up and down the sea front ! ~ Over the road was the promanade ~ And in all it's glory you could see the Sea either coming in or going out ~ What a lovely place * No wonder I dream of it ? ~ A great place like that was like heaven to a child 6 or 7 onwards all those toys and the sea front ! ~ Every year we went same 2 weeks in August same bording house Mrs Austins !
This brought back some great memories. My mom, sister and I would walk to the Woolworth's in nearby Oak Park, IL in the early 1970's. I remember getting an almost life-sized stuffed toy St. Bernard dog for my 8th birthday, and numerous goldfish through the years. Loved that store! Thanks so much, Jordan!
I remember as a kid my Mom would take me and my brother for “playing outside” shoes and they were actually Converse shoes for under $5.00!! What memories you brought back. Thanks for the journey back in time.

My grandfather used to take me when I was very small and made me feel like a real fancy lady eating out of the house lol and sit at the counter and get a 1/2 sandwich in Ft Worth lol. I was so little they used real phonebooks so I could reach my food lol and they called me cute lil missy lol. Then we would go to another store for delicious chocolate (it was just bulk chocolate in chunks lol but I was little lol) then ride the subway home lol.
Dad and I would shop at the store during the holidays. Thank you for bringing a memory back to life. Loving your video😊👍
I believe the item in the case you called an adding machine is actually a money order machine to make out money orders, Im old enough to remember making money orders with those
Yes me too!!
The machine is a Paymaster check writer that stamps the dollar amount on a check or money order. I have one that I still use today!
Oh my I used money orders still in the early 2000s for ebay...amazing how FAST the world changed
My boss has their old paymaster too and yes for stamping checks
This sure brought back some good memories. I loved the lunch counter. I was sad when they closed. I guess the nearest thing to it would be Target ??? I don't know. The food was really good at Woolworths.

Thank you to the school for letting you into the Woolworth museum. So many wonderful old things. I remember so many of them. The sliver thing you thought was a napkin dispenser is actually an old toaster. You pull the door down and put a piece of bread in the slot in the door and then you close it up. There's another door on the other side. When the bread is toasted. You open the door and turn the bread around and toast the other side. Now you see why we have pop up toasters. LOL. The thing that looks like an adding machine is really a check imprinter. You slid the levers to the amount of the check. You slide the check in and pull the handle down. The amount of the check is then imprinted on the check. I used to use one of those in a job I had. It's so wonderful to see all these things from my childhood. I remember they used to have a Woolworth on Market street in San Francisco. Right where the cable cars turn around. Thank you Jordan for bringing us here and getting lucky to go inside and show us all these wonderful things. Glad to see our man Jah looking good. Thanks again for all you do for us. Jordan, I remember the Woolworths in my town, Hamilton Ontario Canada, when I was little, we used to go there to use the old photo booth, and eat. I have fond memories of the place, thanks for bringing them back for me!

Great vlog Jordan!! I'm 63 yrs. old and for just a few minutes, I was a 10 year old girl again, peering into the hamster cages to see which one I would be taking home to mom. ( along with parakeets and goldfish through the years) Then stopping at the lunch counter for a banana split, picking a balloon to see how much I would pay for it that day. Such wonderful memories from such a wonderful store located in Fair Lawn, NJ!! Now, I get to go to Walmart, Ugh!! Thumbs up!!

Hello Jordan the Lion, You have no idea how this episode touched my heart!! Our Mother Dolores and Father Elfego met at a Woolworth 5 and 10 Cent store in our hometown!!! Our Mother and Father wedded in 1945, to bring in a family of 11 children, 18 Grandchildren, 30 Great-Grandchildren and 4 Great-Great Grandchildren!!! Our Father passed in 2004 and our Mother in 2019, we love and miss them, but are grateful, to have them had them here on earth,as long as we did!! Thank you soooo much!! They also sold the individual Beatle dolls 3 of my sister's and I got 1 of each of the Beatles dolls. Wished we had them today.

I remember buying those candy cigarettes, ball & jacks, jump rope, hula hoops, squirt guns, puzzles, sewing patterns, material for my sewing classes at school. Thanks Jordan, that really takes me back, I remember going to Woolworth's and buying a craft pack of wood and creating all kinds of wood sculptures, l also remember getting Jack's, punchy ball and that little plastic doll, it was a very fun time to be a kid. I really miss that store.

Great Woolworth's memories....when I was a kid in New Jersey that was where I did my Christmas shopping for my family. And who can forget those Woolworth banana splits!

Jordan, I truly enjoyed going back to my childhood memories of Woolworth's (and Kresge's) discount stores from this museum visit. I recall walking up and down the aisles, while my mom shopped for hours, looking for her favorite cosmetics, snacks, and hair accessories. One thing I remembered which I don't think anyone has mentioned, is the luscious aroma of caramel and fresh-made popcorn that permeated in the air as soon as one walked in through the heavy glass doors. So glad they allowed you to videotape these wonderful memories.
I just found a picture of the Woolworth's I went to with my great grandmother in the 80's in Perry, Ia. The picture looks to have been taken 40 or 50's. My mom grew up in Minburn Iowa, not to far from this Woolworth's.
When I was a kid Woolworth store was the walmart of the day but way more personal and friendly . They had a food service area with great food staffed by local folks who cared about the quality of the food which was great at our local store . I was last there in 77 and had enough money for a donut on my way to a summer job interview . Our Woolworth store closed pretty soon after that day . It was a great store with lots of great memories for me ....I sure miss those days ..God Bless
My uncle was the postmaster in a tiny post office in central Pennsylvania and had a pop machine like the one in the vlog with all kinds of flavors for a dime at the side of the building. He always had an ashtray full of dimes on his desk and after I went and greeted him (I did love him, too) and we'd talk a little, he'd always ask if I wanted one for some pop and I never turned him down. It was probably in the late sixties until 1971 when he passed away. He was one of the nicest people in the world. So thanks for the memory, Jordan. The entire post takes me back, I'm 57!

What a neatbunespected tour! They sure had a lot! Can't believe bn it's not actually open anymore. You're right about pipes and cigarettes. I remember there bvb were bubbles blowrsvthat were pipes. Even toys that blew smoke.
How fun! I so remember Woolworth's lunch counter. I still have the kitschy, bronze-metal, horse statue Grandma purchased for me for $1.98 (over 65 years ago!). Yes indeed, Woolworth's was a part of my younger years!

I use to work at Woolworths, back in the '80's. My favorite place to hangout was lunch counter. Food wasn't horrible, but it wasn't the best either.

Great video! Im from that area and back in the 80's my mom and my sister both worked at that Oxnard Woolworths for several years. It was a sad day when it closed. I wish they'd re-open the museum. Thanks for doing this video, Im so glad you were able to get inside. Love all the old memorabilia.
When I was really young there was a super old one close to my house it had an old creaky wood floor and all the shelves were old wood and glass I absolutely loved that store! Sad that's gone. So sweet you got to show us a peak!! Awesome!!
