How to Remove and Disassemble the Gauge Cluster on a 95-04 Toyota Tacoma

  • How to remove the gauge cluster on first generation Toyota Tacoma. You may notice some variations between the years, this is a 2001. The reason for removing the cluster is that my temperature started acting up again, so I’m looking into a common problem for these trucks. The same issue can cause a faulty fuel gauge too.

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -phillips screwdriver
    -socket set with driver handle
    -nylon trim tool
    -contact cleaner
    Procedure:
    Start by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery.
    The bottom trim piece will need to be removed under the radio bezel, there should be two clips holding this in place, one on each side. Push in the center to release the factory clips, then remove. Pull out the trim panel, then disconnect the electrical components on the rear, for this I have two 12v power ports and the factory security led.
    To remove the ashtray, push down the top and then pull it straight out. Remove the one phillips screw on the bottom. Removing the HVAC panel, pull off the rotational knobs first.
    Using for fingers for a nylon trim tool, unclip the panel by pulling out from the knob holes. Start from one side and move your way across. There will be two phillips screws behind this panel.
    To remove the radio bezel, use the nylon trim tool and start from an edge, then work your way around disconnecting the clips. Disconnect the plug on the rear for the passenger airbag switch.
    Unplug the cigarette lighter at the bottom and remove the socket for the ashtray light. Remove the knee panel below the steering column. You’ll find various phillips and 10mm fasteners. There will be screws around the hood release too.
    The steering column trim will need to be removed to have enough room to take out the cluster trim. For this, there are three phillips screws in total. Gain access to two by rotating the steering wheel left and right. Remove the last screw on the bottom of the column. This is split between the top and bottom sections. Tilt the steering wheel down and then remove the top section.
    Remove the clock and ignition switch bezel, this just snaps into place. Remove the two phillips screws above the cluster. Remove the three phillips screws under the dimmer switch area.
    Reach in behind the dash and pull down the duct so it’s disconnected from the vent. Pull the trim out to disconnect the clips. Then disconnect the switches on the rear.
    There are four phillips screws holding in the cluster. Tilt the cluster out to the passenger side. Depress the tangs on the electrical connectors and disconnect each one.
    As for splitting down the cluster, there are various snaps clips holding on the lens portion. The black tabs need to be pushed down and there will need to be mild tension to keep them disconnected. Then finally remove. To remove the temperature gauge, remove the three phillips screws on the rear. You’ll have to maneuver the gauge out of its position, bend the speedometer backing out slightly and then pull out the cluster.
    I have heard of issues with corrosion on the terminal so that could be a problem, however, in my situation which is very common, the nuts on the terminals come loose. A couple of these nuts were loose. You can remove these nuts, then remove the board to inspect for any corrosion. As a step for preventative maintenance, I applied some DeoxIt D100L to the terminals.
    Assembly the gauge cluster in reverse of disassembly. I cleaned the lens to remove any dust which seems to settle inside over time. Make sure everything in the cluster is in its correct position. Line up the lens, then snap it back into place.
    I applied more DeoxIt D100L to the connections on the rear of the cluster again. I did notice a light amount of corrosion on the one terminal.
    Put the cluster back into place and install the four phillips screws. Before everything else is reinstalled, you can hook up the battery temporarily to ensure the cluster is working correctly.
    Install all the other trim piece in reverse of removal.

    Brother you are a absolute angel to me rn. I had a temp gauge go out on my 2003 a year and a half ago and I was gonna have a shop do it and they quoted me a ridiculous amount and said my gauge was bad! I followed all your steps and did everything myself and my entire dash is fixed thanks to you! Thank you so much for this amazing video!!

    Not only is this a great video and very detailed, but because of this video my problem was solved. Temp gauge started dropping randomly and if i tapped on the dash it would come back. Untill that stopped working. Once I took the dash cluster out I found one of those small nuts behind the gauge had completly come off. Screwed it back on and sure enough, my gauge is working again. Thank you!

      Thank you. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done. Threadlocker may interrupt the connection and it's too delicate to stack the threads. If anything, maybe it wasn't tightened enough from factory.

    Hi there I have a question. I took my 2006 Sequoia cluster out to replace the 4LO light, realized it was all tiny LED's, and figured I could live with it. I must've knocked the speedometer dial because now it's all whacked. It hovers at speeds that aren't accurate, and does not settle back to zero when I stop. Basically it's got a mind of its own. Is there any type of procedure I can do to reset this thing? All the other gauges perform normally. Thanks in advance, I have scoured youtube and the forums to no avail.

      you can do it! I just did it on my 98 since its electrical and not manual like in the 95-97 you can do the swap and all of the gauges work.

    My problem is my temp gauge goes up to 3/4 all the time. After start up in about 3-4min. I wonder if I need a new gauge. I check with obd2 scanner and scanner read temp at 180-185. So it ain’t over heating. 🤔

    I have a question about gauge clusters! Perhaps you might know. I did not realize this until I recently bought a used 2002 Sienna, but I guess some cars come with a gauge cluster that does not have the RPM Tachometer from the factory (as an optional thing). This is the case for this 2002 Sienna. I've seen a used OEM gauge cluster with a tachometer for sale and wondered if I could replace mine with it. Is the mileage of the vehicle simply stored in the vehicle's ECU and that data from the ECU gets transferred to the mileage gauge display? Or is the mileage data stored in the gauge cluster's electronic board and the ECU has no involvement in that display? I would not want to replace the gauge display to have a tachometer if it meant inheriting some other vehicle's mileage.

    • @flinch622
      @flinch622 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are in luck. When you hook up an OBD tool on a vehicle with no tachometer in the dash, note that you do in fact have RPM functionality within/monitored by the ECS. So it's all about the harness then - tach/non-tach clusters use the exact same connectors [most vehicles], and your Sienna likely has an existing input awaiting a gauge as long as that was an OEM option for that year. I'm in the same boat as you [except I'm not driving a Sienna] but haven't tackled the project yet so all I can recommend is reviewing the manuals before throwing money at parts. Start with factory manual [volume 2 has the non-engine bits] and refer to Body Electrical section [BE-40 through BE-42 for a 1995 tacoma]. They call the tach trigger an "igniter" for some reason - that's the input you need to drive the meter. i also found the wiring diagram book helpful [publication EWD 231U for the 1995 Tacoma]. Technical writing might have connector labeling not in agreement [A, B, C, etc] between books - don't worry about that, just make corrections based on what you find is true for the cluster: it worked as shipped so markup any drawings that need it. In most cases, I go with number of pins as an early indicator of what is right: that much follows design engineering or it wouldn't have shipped in the first place. Publications get labeling confused between what the tech sees building a cluster [left to right] and forget to mirror labeling on drawings more often than they care to admit when doing technical writing.
      I'm very happy to have found this video, because it covers my current situation perfectly: temp gauge is generally off, and gas gauge jumps around from time to time - my local dealership doesn't handle electrical problems worth beans, but that's another story. And... I notice something very interesting at 6:10 showing the meter movement connections had no star washers between nuts and flat washers to prevent vibration or thermal events from loosening nuts over time. Gotta fix that.

    I need some help. Have a 2003 Tacoma.low beams are dim. Gage cluster is dark now. Dimmer wouldn't affect low beams. After market low beams won't even come on now. I have had some water getting in behind the firewall and in front of dashboard. I rhink I've got thay pinned down.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like it could be a wiring issue. Although a quick check would be switching back to factory involves if the aftermarket versions are causing a problem. The dim headlights can also be caused by a bad ground. You’ll need to use a multimeter, start at your headlights and work your way back.

    • @robr2389
      @robr2389 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4DIYers Okay. Thank You. I do have a DMM and will begin tracing wiring back. When I said aftermarket low beams, I misspoke. I meant fog lamps mounted on billy bar. I'm also thinking it could be connector corrosion.
