Honestly, I think the song embodies Cyndi. She still put her true self out there. She was known in the 80’s for her music but also for bright red hair & very different from the norm hairstyles & fashion sense. She is & always will be a trend setters who does her true self. Love her so much.

Remember the album was called "she's so unusual" - which is what was said about her in a way to NOT say "she's weird... or I don't get it" -- she was and IS awesome - I love the version of "We are the World" - that is all about Cyndi -- it's kind of hilarious - you can see most of the singers - like Huey Lewis - getting a kick out of it - but Kim Carnes is fuming... like her "big star moment" is being usurped... th-cam.com/video/HpReqNFVL-0/w-d-xo.html

Cyndi recorded this with a very gentle voice because she wanted it to sound soft and childlike. she has spoken about the power of a whisper. The song was actually made as a tribute to her friend who recently died of AIDs. This song has gone on to become a major anthem for all those who suffer. Cyndi's song Im Gonna Be Strong is also amazing

I sang this as a tribute at the house of 1 of my best friends mothers after her funeral. We were sityjng arounf plating music and eating and talking about Sonya. I asked her if it was okay if I sing one of OUR favorite songs and she said YES. This and Time After Time were both of our favorites. She had the cassettes in her room but I told Mom don't worry about looking for them I'll sing it accapella. I'd had tears coming down while I was singing this and when I finished, Mom and Dad were both crying. It has always been a very emotional and special song for me and it just always will be. ❤

Dana says- We used to take my son to a camp every year that was especially for us families with kids on the Autism Spectrum and at the end of camp, on the last day, we'd all gather for the kids to get their special awards. The very last thing we did every year was sing this song as one of the organizers led, playing the guitar. Most of us parents couldn't get through the song without breaking into tears because we know the battles our kids face every day and will always face, for understanding, to find friends, to withstand bullying and ignorance and people who are supposed to help them but don't, but we also cried because our kids are so amazing, have such strength and love and empathy, and because we love them for exactly who they are. This song will always hold a special place in our hearts and Cyndi's heart for anyone who is different, misunderstood, or just dances to the beat of a different drum is a blessing.

Though Cyndi didn't write this song, it ended up being her signature song. A few years after its release, the song was embraced by the LGBT community as an anthem for self-acceptance and solidarity. Having had a sister who is gay and having had a close friend who passed away from AIDS in the early 80s, Cyndi embraced this new following that the song had, and decided to make it into something. She started a foundation called The True Colors Fund with the intention of raising money to help fight homelessnes among LGBT youth. There is now a True Colors shelter and a True Colors concert tour that helps raise money for the foundation. Cyndi just turned 67 and continues to combine her music with her activism. As the title of her first album says, "She's So Unusual", but she's amazing as well.

I was shocked to see her in concert about 18 years ago and find she has HUGE pipes. That little girl voice was all I'd heard. She was even in a wheelchair (she said the elephant Cher Rode had knocked her off the stage and broke her leg), and she still belted her songs hard.

When Cyndi Lauper once worked in a diner, an older lady who was an occasional customer, came in wearing a really bright cheerful outfit. Cyndi being curious asked the lady about her outfit and the lady replied., 'on my darkest days I wear my most colourful clothes'.

Cyndi's songs are ALWAYS emotional, whether they're sad like my favorite Sally's Pigeons or fun like She Bop or Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. I suggest listening to Sally's Pigeons when you are alone. She Bop, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Iko Iko are fun and up-beat ones, but for emotional try All Through The Night, Time After Time, I'm Gonna Be Strong, I Drove All Night.

Hey, India! I don't have enough words to express how excited I am to see your reaction to Cyndi Lauper and especially for True Colors. Usually when people react to Cyndi Lauper, reactors go to Girls Just Want to Have Fun or Time After Time most of the time but I haven't seen reactions for True Colors until now. Cyndi is one of my top favorite artists and although I have tons of favorite songs from her True Colors is my #1. I could go on and on and on about why this song means so much for me but let's get to other things about this song. In regards of the song, Cyndi recorded and wrote a song called Boy Blue (which you can also check out because it's just beautiful and her vocals are insane and incredibly emotional as always) for a close friend of hers that was dying of AIDS. He asked Cyndi to write him a song. As Cyndi recounts it in a jokingly manner she wrote it with her heart, soul and liver but then came along True Colors. As you mentioned it in your reaction, it was written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, who also have written a great deal of huge classics from 80's such as Like a Virgin, Eternal Flame, I Drove All Night, Alone, So Emotional, etc. True Colors was offered to a couple of artists before Cyndi, among them Anne Murray but was turned down. The demo was a piano-led ballad with gospel undertones. However, when the song got in Cyndi's hands, as she always co-arranges her songs, she dismantled the arrangement from the demo and turned it into what we all know and come to love. Even though Cyndi didn't write this song herself, it became the song that her friend dying of AIDS loved to hear and through time it unofficially became an anthem for the LGBTI community. Furthermore, Cyndi has a foundation called True Colors, which among other things, does concerts with renowned and up and coming artists joining forces to raise awareness about AIDS and creating conscience about the LGBTI community. About the music video, Cyndi explained that it's storytelling and it's symbolized by the opening African drum appearing in the beginning and end of the video, reminiscing the old African tradition of oral storytelling. It symbolizes the passage of time and this is represented by the seashell that Cyndi features in one of the scenes of the video. You can see Cyndi's real-life mom in this video as the Caucasian woman with the big hat sitting with the colored lady on a boat having tea. She appeared in a lot of Cyndi's early videos. Also, you can spot Cyndi's at-the-time boyfriend and manager, Dave Wolff, as the long-haired guy who comes out of the water and kisses Cyndi. The last scene from the video where Cyndi appears lying on the sand was used as the album cover for her True Colors album. This video is notorious for the popular newspaper skirt which is a demonstration of the quirkiness and how characteristic Cyndi's sense of fashion is. I hope I didn't bore you but there was a lot to say about True Colors. I look forward to more Cyndi reactions. Her discography is amazing and very diverse and I hope you don't stick to her 80's hits because there's a lot more to discover.
