Thanks for tuning in!! I was pleasantly surprised with the results of the final game here. The lighting was changed (which is most apparent in the underwater section), but the large amount of detail in every environment is still there. The only thing that is a bit disappointing is the removal of the Tremortusk fight on that beach, though there is at least other instances of these fights throughout the rest of the game. As for the quality of the game itself, I've been really enjoying my time with it. It has some issues here and there that I've detailed in my final review, but it's a solid game otherwise. Would've loved to see the more colorful saturated look for the ocean in the final retail version it really impressed me in that state of play presentation
My biggest saddened part is the vibrant colors in the water. I really missed that in the actual game play. However I was impressed with the mission with Poseidon. The lights and colors made up for it a bit. The darkness in the gameplay made it quite hard to play at times not knowing were to go. Other than that and lost visuals they did a fairly good job with the game.
Did y'all just stop playing before making it to the ocean? It may not be as bright in the sense of lighting but it is still blue and one of the most impressive water systems for an ocean we've seen other than maybe that pirate game on xbox.
I think the thing that makes it so impressive on the final release (and even still on the first game on previous gen) is being an open world game, the large scale detail that all of this is carried over the entire game, and not just the state of play demo area.
Still, open world games with linear storylines make no sense. It´s just like watching the same movie or reading the same book over and over again. Impactful decisions would´ve enrich the gameplay a lot more, than just graphics.
@@Morpheus-pt3wq I've only played the first one (plus expansion) but there's plenty of side missions and quests on the side of the main mission. It wasn't a linear experience for me at all because of that as I picked and chose what I wanted to do next. It depends on how you play it, that's one of the good things about it being open world too. @@grandmasterj5 Not sure if you've been able to play the game yet, but Horizon Forbidden West seems to have even more side quests, that also seem to carry through much better. I haven't completed the game (mainly because I've been doing a bunch of side content), but the game does well to make the side quests actually feel impactful. It won't change the way the story goes, but the amount of side info that you learn about is great. Plus a lot of quests seem to have the same thought put into them as the actual main story quests, which is a welcome change.

In 9:45, the rolling animation shown is still in the game, but it is an automatic animation, on the retail footages, you probably pressed the circle button when Landing, thus performing the dodging animation, that’s why it seems so unatural and clunky, if you do it again without pressing anything, Aloy will just roll as in the state of play gameplay
Really? I have not had her auto-roll before - that's interesting. Usually she just does a superhero drop. Must be a very precise requirement to trigger the animation.
Nothing about Ubisoft has a “downgraded video,” or are you still stuck on the initial Watch_Dogs trailer of the game before it was redesigned after a postponement!? Far Cry, Rainbow 6, last 3 AC games and even the past 2 WD trailers have been near identical to retail as well! Then again, who cares how great a game looks of the story is crap!? Have you all forgotten Cyberpunk already??
Ubisoft is their own shady beast, but other than them I feel like people use the word "downgrade" too flippantly when talking about games. For every piece of genuine pre release bullshot, we get a case of people just over reacting over visual stuff that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of the game (see puddlegate for spiderman 2018). Honestly any game that changes art styles, mechanics or assets over development (or in other words, any game at all) could be considered a "downgrade" with how people use the word. If a downgrade happens and there's no pre release trailer to compare the post release game to, does it cease to be a downgrade?
Something i noticed in these trailers, E3 footages. Much more light sources, even at far distances. Crisp shadows and overall better ambient occlusion. Even small details cast a shadow and again, even at far distances. Plus everything is lit so brightly. It makes such a good feel, the retail always looks so... regular compared to it. Like the usual video game look.
I wish there was an ingame option to turn on the hero lighting from this state of play instead of the toned down one we got. I think it looked awesome.
@@RobOngrui I can't care less about what you wish, I was talking about the end of your sentence, saying the effect looks awesome. It's pretty much 50/50, some people like it, others dont
I think it looks amazing, and the difference on Aloy is due to a "hero lightning" rig attached to her always, that makes the characters pop up more on screen, but for me now is looking much better, as before it was too exaggerated.
Exactly. In most games it's the opposite situation like the character blends mroe naturally into the environment in the demos while in the retail version the character pops more because of constant lighting on the playable character(s).
Exactly like her hair is wayyyyy too shiny in the state of play for me. Although it technically DOES look better that you can see the details of her hair more, it makes Aloy more blended in the game.
@@nava6474 bcuse you haven’t played it, i played and finished the game in ps4 AND ps5 and i found it ONLY smoother in ps5 with less bugs, if you think it looks garbage u might need a check
With so many awful game releases lately, am I a cynic for thinking some game developers are now going to purposely downgrade their demos so the retail release ends up looking better? Not saying Guerrilla Games did that with Forbidden West, but it's a thought that crossed my mind.
@@Rilumai that tbh would be much better and more honest. Set yourself certain standards and release a demo with graphics you already know you can achieve with modern hardware.
I like the lighting and colours of the state of play version more but retail still looks good. Also the brighter water looks considerably better in my opinion.
@@Clay3613 Changing my color settings just for one game isn't worth it and you can only do so much to emulate it. The lighting also changes the colors somewhat and you can't change that with tv/monitor settings without it ruining it in different lighting.
@@OutlanderCult idk what monitor you have or even TV but most monitors and TVs now have custom profiles so you can adjust as you wish and save it. Might not be worth the work to you, for a lot of us, it absolutely is The thing you see in the state of play version is color graded artificially to make it look more poppy and vibrant and all. Here the comparison image is just the raw image, not the color graded one. Change your settings, does the same thing. The final version has colors more suited to general use and more realistic
@@MaxC_1 I have no idea what kind of monitor/tv you have but mine can't change the lighting especially underwater because no matter how much you tweak your tv it won't look like state of play version.
@@OutlanderCult well I use monitor anyway and I can get the colors pretty poppy for underwater. As for if you are talking about the extra high contrast underwater along with the whole "hero lighting" thing. Yeah that isn't part of the game, that was just to put emphasis on the character and exploration
Apart from minor indirect lighting and color grading adjustments, pretty much the same versions, retail looks less saturated/vibrant. Although prefer brighter underwater from SoP gameplay.
The saturation could potentially be differences in video settings in the game, or in the recorder used. When I first started the game my game was ridiculously over-saturated and looked awful. I had to fiddle with the settings to reduce the saturation to make things look less cartoony. I had just gotten a new 4k HDR capable TV, and the HDR required considerable tweaking in the game's video settings to get it looking right. Obviously the global lighting reduction is not a game setting issue.
I’ve changed my monitor settings to a more cool tone as opposed to warm ones, and I can get a pretty close image to the one in the state of play. Looks phenomenal!
6:55 another thing is that the tree animations are much more noticable in the retail version. But idk if having more animations like this is more taxing and if the wind changes depending on the weather or not

I've been using the photo mode lately and I'm just so impressed with the details and the overall world building in this game. Guerilla should be proud of what they have accomplished with this game.
I wish developers would implement a "demo" mode like changing the light to the demo light version. Even if it would look bad at certain spots, it would calm down everyone who would like to know "what could have been".
Was the "demo" trailer rendered on the console or a PC? Games are made on PC which is why they often look better compared to the final game. You take the most POWERFUL PC hardware and render a nice trailer. You aim to make that on console but often don't get there. So if it's mainly a PROCESSING POWER issue there's no point in adding a "demo" mode that is really low FPS. And if it's NOT a processing power issue then why not have the features there? The game will almost certainly get UPDATED in a couple years as devs learn more about the hardware. There is likely going to be something similar to DLSS that frees up some processing power that they can then use for improved lighting.
Two things: 1. I was skeptical because but GG are fucking beasts and they, overall, upgraded what we already saw. 2. Congrats to you because you made such an amazing job with this video.
@@r6scrubs126 It looks better mate, just look how lifeless the world looks compared to how alive it is in the retail. The artistic changes I think make it look better also
Very much hoping for a lighting mode option where the underwater section specifically, looks like it's counterpart in the demo,I'm just way too much of a sucker for vibrant textures and lighting in games
That looks like a mental problem buddy to be a sucker for vibrancy of the textures that you are probably not even gonna explore like the underwater section you mentioned
@@basictutorials3325 where did he say he wasn’t going to explore. Talk about mental problems, you can’t even comprehend that people can enjoy aesthetics.
I wonder if the change in lighting is an artistic choice or a technical one. As much as I wouldn’t have preferred the more vibrant underwater stuff, either way the game we got overall looks the same in comparison to this demo. Drop dead gorgeous. Guerrilla really nailed this.
I would guess the demo was probably made for ps5 only. Once they started finnishing the game they probably had to change a few things so the game would also work on ps4.
Surprised it wasn't mentioned at all that now all vegetation is heavily swaying in the wind, whereas it was almost or completely static in the demo. Huge improvement to atmosphere!
Kinda looks like a spotlight shining on Aloy at all times. To me, it looks good, but I do understand why it's not present in the final build, it can look very distracting.
I liked it too. On the PS5 version it's toned down but active during both gameplay and cutscenes while in the PS4 version it's only active during cutscenes. I like this effect. Not everyone will like it but to me it makes the character more pleasing to the eye and makes the presentation look more like an animated movie.
I'm actually one of those who enjoys the fact that reveal "gameplay" isn't like for like with the final product. I love watching a reveal but at the same time want to get a good idea of what I'm going to be experiencing without spoiling epic moments of story or actual gameplay.
The graphics in this game will completely blow you away and I have yet to see this on a OLED display! I’m also happy that Guerilla Games went balls to the wall with the PS4 version. A lot of game developers do a half assed job with previous gen consoles.
Funny how people can still complain and say that the game looks bad, even though it looks phenomenal. I'm impressed by many new PS and Xbox games that came out. Some developers are finally throwing a lot of effort in their games, compared to the BF2024, Vanguard and Cyberpunk drama.
Man it's beyond refreshing to see a company actually maintain a demo's visual fidelity, and even enhance it for the retail build in some cases here. We always hear about how this company or that company downgraded their visuals in the final build - not these guys. This is how games should be made
Most Playstation exclusives are like this. They are the last hope for us since companies like CD Project failed. God of War, The Last of us, and Horizon Zero dawn are masterpieces and worth every Penny. Didn't play Ghost of Tsushima so far but it's the same quality.
@@ryanlunzen9794 You can trust Rockstar to deliver and amazing single player story with a brilliant open world, however their practices when it comes to online gaming are pretty predatory nowadays
@@mclovinjr9086 Tbh I don't know about this. I think GTA V Single Player wasnt that good. And what they did with the franchise with no Story DLC and don't Trust them anymore. RDR2 was such a superior game in every aspect.
Honestly at this day and age of videogames, seeing the retail build having retained about 85-90% of what was presented in the demo is a remarkable achievement in and of itself. Too many companies have pulled off that bait and switch method with their game reveals - and it needs to stop. Glad to see Guerilla Games blowing other devs out of the water with expectations vs. reality.
Yeah, I partially agree, because it's ironic for you to mention "blowing out the water" considering the underwater segments looks downgraded if compared to the scripted trailer. It's too goddamn dark, we can't judge if it got better or worse. But other than that, yep, 90% of the effects remain. Maybe in a future PC port the game will retain all the fanciness and then some more
Isn't it cheating showing advanced lighting in reveal and cutting it in retail? It's also what happened in Dying Light 2. They show one thing, sell the other.
This is actually really interesting, the mission seems to have been cut weeks before the game launched. An IGN reviewer played this exact same mission but instead of talking about raiders riding machines she's in tbe grass talking to sylens and he questions her if she can take them out. This possibility is the reason why the trees from the tremortusk are still scatterd around. Also lots of ppl criticised the hero lighting and said it looked unnatural possibility why this changed alot.
Hi, the hair underwater have actually improved. It no longer have the screen door effect but is just as detailed. If you look at it under different lighting conditions you’ll see the detail is still there :)
For reasons of this it would be nice if developers would implement different looks which you can choose. A State of Play Color Grading would be nice, I like that way more than the more realistic one
As for the water I did notice those differences too, and I would’ve enjoyed the hero lighting only in this situation and an overall brighter visual as well given how beautiful the underwater world is. But I will see that the perhaps more realistic darker setting underwater built up a lot more suspense in certain parts of the game for sure
It's by no means anything close to a horrific Ubisoft downgrade, still it would've been nice to have that same saturation and stuff underwater like the state of play. Crazy how the entire state of play was basically a Marvel-style made up scene compared to the final product.
Im happy for that the game is close to the showcase. Somehow its a downgrade in lighting which results in darker disappointing underwater sections Why all the developers doing this, showing ammazing graphics to expect, but definite (atleast a little)downgrad in retail versions.Just show what u can achieve in retail version.
yeah it resulted very close to gameplay trailers. The difference in "colour" is basically that gameplay trailers are using Raytraced Global Illumination.
I think all of these will be easily achieveable as the state of the play build as soon as the game hits PC. The mod community has done a tremendous job on GOW with its lighting and environment and I hope they do it for HFW as well.
Changes in lighting and water effects make it more realistic in my opinion. I think the colors in the demo were oversaturated and unrealistic. Same about water effects and water surface.
@@TheFirstAtom I started in fidelity mode too but went to performance mode within 1-2 hours of playing. I can usual tolerate 30fps just fine, but for some reason, I can't with this game. Plus, there's not much of a difference between the two modes here. At least, not that I can notice.
@@ArchangelExile The one big difference I notice with fidelity is that I can see like every crack in every surface, rock or mountain. The 3D Space seems to *pop* out more, making me feel like I’m this tiny person within a giant world. With performance, I feel like I can tell it’s more of a video game… not sure if that really makes sense, as I’m not too sure how else to describe the differences for me.
I much prefer the unrealistic lighting. I don’t care if real trees aren’t that green and real water isn’t that bright I want pretty!! Give me shiny gaming!
This is the second game that I wish I could play that is on the Playstation 5. The first is the recent Ratchet and Clank game. The character faces are so realistic in this game that I mistook a screenshot for an actual movie not a video game.
Man I really wish this game was on PC so it could be played in full glory. Also wish they incorporated, dare I say, a more "souls like" element, considering it is essentially a survival game? Playing Elden Ring alongside HFW and even though Elden Rings world map is much more "boring" visually, it is far far more immersive and enthralling because the player is *forced* to constantly be aware of their surroundings, knowing the may lose all souls, progress, buffs, runes, etc, and forces the player to stop and LOOK AROUND and take in the environment to ensure that they are in the best position to move forward. Horizon is beutiful, but you cannot help but just run past all of the amazing scenery and landmarks because you either already know it's irrelevent (because the world map indicates it's not a POI), and the nature of Horizons items, weapons, upgrades, etc, doesn't really allow for the devs to put items in unique places that *force* the play to explore and actually look around. In Elden Ring you never know what's around the corner, in Horizon you always do. That really seperates the two. I'm not saying Horizon should clone soulsborne/Elden Ring, but man would it be incredible if the world map was just a plain old paper map like in Elden Ring with very few markers. Not a map that tells you exactly what to expect. Quests that you know exactly where to go because of the compass, etc, and a lack of items and gear that encourage exploration. Horizon Forbidden West "FromSoft Edition" would be incredible. Hopefully devs learn from the massive success of Elden Ring that players DO NOT WANT OUR HANDS HELD the entire game. We want to explore, we want a truely open world for an adventure. This isn't to say that Horizon is not a good game, it is, but there is so much potential here that's just missing because of game design choices that plague the industry, particular open world games.
I mean.... the changes are minor. There's not some notable 'downgrade' (that a lot of you like to look for). The game looks as beautiful as promised with very few artistic changes (which happens with every game).
honestly the graphics got better imo. I get it if you don't trust trailers but this is one of the few times where the final product was better than the trailer.
Vertical slice demos will never look the same as the final release, there will always be tech limitations on prebaked lighting and geometric detail that's only apparent later in development when the entire world is being used. Its definitely interesting trying to figure out the causes or reasons behind these changes though, and the game still looks amazing so it's hardly a watch dogs 1 scenario or anything
I do believe the turning down of vibrance is largely there to reduce tiredness and lengthen our play time. Looking at bright things too frequently can make eyes hurt faster, and constant exposure to blue light can lead to exhaustion and disruption in circadian rhythms. At least for me, sometimes I just want to get lost in the horizon world for hours, taking in the sceneries and getting relaxed. Still, I hope they'd include custome filter and saturation settings in future updates.
Those kinds of downgrades don’t surprise me anymore; the industry has been doing this for ages. Still looks wonderful and those facial animations are the best I’ve seen along with TLOU2.
A greatly detailed analysis. As one of the pre-ordered or day one gamers of this game, I feel what you mentioned in regards to some of the removed assets and the mission itself 💪🏼
The difference in Color is appears to be that they warmed up the Color scheme. The SoP demo is cooler with more blue and green in it, where the actual game is using a warmer Color scheme with more red and orange.
I like the retail version more, it just feels more alive, state of play’s version of the world was so static and the trees weren’t even reacting to the wind
100% truth they switched the light off. It's crazy how many fans here are denying the obvious. This is an enormous downgrade and I really didn't expect that from Guerilla
I think the changes are artistic choices, most of what I see looks more impressive than the gameplay reveal. Great video man. Your coverage of this game has been excellent
I have it on PS5 and this is easily the game with the most detailed flora I've ever seen in a game... problem is, I have a Qled TV and the game has this really weird oversharpening effect due to HDR not calibrated correctly, especially on performance mode- so keep that in mind if you wanna purchase and also be on the lookout for patches.
In performance mode ur sacrificing having things like that for frames it’s most likely the ssr being lowered to a point where it will cause the flickering

This is probably a different branch of the project, so the things you see in the reveal version is newer than the ones in the final one. They probably changed couple of things separately in the trailer build to make it more charming.
This is really impressive but it's a shame that enemies no longer harbor these sections and that the mission structure from the demo has been cut and changed for another narrative the beach worked so well imho
So much work went into this video - amazing. I love the final build of HFW, but I'm definitely disappointed by the lack of vibrancy and gorgeous blue water that was present in the State of Play. I get that it's more realistic to not have that, but it was just so beautiful to look at; I wish they'd kept it.
This game is damn near Red Dead 2 levels of detail, from the stars in the night sky, the characters noses accurately portraying light through the skin. Masterclasses of graphics
The graphics are at a higher fidelity in horizon obviously, but that's because there's a whole generational gap which allows for 4k textures to be streamed in most of the time. But, considering rdr2 was created for last Gen hardware I can't even begin to imagine how true to life future projects from Rockstar will be. The future of gaming is bright!

@@collegebro85 go watch his Division 2 comparison videos. Watch Dogs isn't the only thing that changes.
@@habadasheryjones omg Puddlegate was hilarious. When they added the puddle sticker to photo mode that was brilliant trolling.

Dying Light 2 was a disappointment in that regard

@@Rilumai that tbh would be much better and more honest. Set yourself certain standards and release a demo with graphics you already know you can achieve with modern hardware.

I like the lighting and colours of the state of play version more but retail still looks good. Also the brighter water looks considerably better in my opinion.
Your TV has color settings...
Might not be worth the work to you, for a lot of us, it absolutely is
The thing you see in the state of play version is color graded artificially to make it look more poppy and vibrant and all.

I really hope you are making a ton of money. You put so much work into your videos and you clearly always know what you are talking about
Apart from minor indirect lighting and color grading adjustments, pretty much the same versions, retail looks less saturated/vibrant.
Just take good care of your eyes from the blue tint

I wish developers would implement a "demo" mode like changing the light to the demo light version. Even if it would look bad at certain spots, it would calm down everyone who would like to know "what could have been".
in demo's things are usually orchestrated in a much more controlled way, a mode like that would probably break the rest of the world's lighting.
nah
no
underwater light is much better on demo version
Two things:
1. I was skeptical because but GG are fucking beasts and they, overall, upgraded what we already saw.
2. Congrats to you because you made such an amazing job with this video.

Great job comparing this stuff! Good to see a game where the final version is actually pretty darn close to what we saw pre-release.
I think Gorilla delivered. The changes in the final version are 95% artistic and/or influenced by environmental effects/time of day/weather.
I wish we could turn on that body lighting from the demonstration. Makes Alloy pop more, even though it’s not as realistic.
Kinda looks like a spotlight shining on Aloy at all times.
To me, it looks good, but I do understand why it's not present in the final build, it can look very distracting.
there was some criticism when they showed it, it's still there but they reduced its intensity
I liked it too. On the PS5 version it's toned down but active during both gameplay and cutscenes while in the PS4 version it's only active during cutscenes. I like this effect. Interesting how the vertical slice was a realistic goal, not only a show-off to get people hyped.
Same with the 1st
As for the water I did notice those differences too, and I would’ve enjoyed the hero lighting only in this situation and an overall brighter visual as well given how beautiful the underwater world is. But I will see that the perhaps more realistic darker setting underwater built up a lot more suspense in certain parts of the game for sure
It's by no means anything close to a horrific Ubisoft downgrade, still it would've been nice to have that same saturation and stuff underwater like the state of play. Crazy how the entire state of play was basically a Marvel-style made up scene compared to the final product.

I've played it on PS4 and I'm doing new game plus on PS5. It's really exactly the same aside from PS5's controller hurting my hands.
This is why I never get hype or excited for state of play trailers/gameplay footage, HOWEVER, I absolutely love when you do these videos!
I mean.... the changes are minor. There's not some notable 'downgrade' (that a lot of you like to look for). The game looks as beautiful as promised with very few artistic changes (which happens with every game).

I like how overall the finished product is pretty similar if not sometimes better than the demo, as sometimes they really do exaggerate reveals.
One of the most common things that haunted the first game was that #1 the initial realtime gameplay reveal was fake #2 that the game couldn't look that good. When the real game dropped needless to say the shock was wild.
I can't imagine how long it took you to Make this video. Thank you for your time and videos PERFECT
