    Thank you so much for this thorough explanation! My brain can’t wrap around something without understanding the big picture, and you’ve taught me this whole system, along with all the simple real world troubleshooting steps. Such a valuable contribution for us home mechanics working on older cars 😅
    I’m replacing the starter cut relay on my 94 civic, and unfortunately it’s buried up above the drivers side fuse box. Had to pull the whole dash to get to the bolt. Thankfully it looks like they corrected the location on newer models.

    Love the deep dive approach. I'm surprised the starter pull-in coil is not wired through the motor ground. I guess with these small engines, it isn't so critical to separate pull-in coil from hold-in coil.

    Thanks for your video. I have a 2000 EX6 and suddenly it won't start in park or neutral 🤔. Battery is new and good. Of course it happens on vacation 🙄. I think it may be the starter cut relay. The starter always works fine. Again your video will help in troubleshooting.

    Great job on this! Very helpful. I'm about to purchase a 2005 CR-V that supposedly has a failed starter. It's nice to see the current flow diagram. You didn't mention the 3 fuses in the fuse box up on the battery, so I'll check that current is flowing through those also.

    Great video. I recently experienced one additional possibility with my son's 2007 Accord. The plastic pad that the clutch switch presses against broke into pieces so the switch had nothing to contact. Took a bit to figure out that was what happened. I have a wood turning lathe so I turned a replacement to fit the mounting hole. Hard to get my hands in there for installation, but that solved the issue. Honda must have a problem with those pad because the one for the cruise control circuit was also missing.

    Guys. I can’t stress this enough: CHECK YOUR WIRES! I’ve been waiting on a starter for like 3 days, finally got it and changed it out, only to find out the ground connection to the chassis was all corroded. Anyways my starter was sounding kind of slow so I’m leaving it on but just to save yourselves some headaches, check your wires every now and then 😅

    Excellent video... the simple legacy tricks to get out of jam, if you are that lucky, are priceless.
    Knocking on a starter solenoid or knocking on a fuel tank to wake up a dying fuel pump can save a gouging wrecker trip
    Wiggling an ignition switch or knocking on a relay or temporarily swapping relays...(when possible) also good!
    Without the detailed expressed logic and the schematics on the car you are working on, today good luck tracking issues!
    If you don't know your ignition switch makes a request to your BCM which in turn talks to the ECM, and then the ECM
    commands the relay that actually engages the 12V to the starter and the problem is somewhere in the middle !? no legacy thinking will help!
    ...and how much of it is buried in PCBs that are invisible(like sandwiched in a distribution(fuse) block... again good luck!
    ALSO:
    ...a good thing to carry on-board, an emergency fuses/relays kit... that has at least one duplicate for every type fuse/relay in your vehicle,
    including a fuse and relay tester. ...Mechanics rob the ones that are in the unused free slots reserved just for that!
    On my vehicle, 4 distribution blocks, NOT ONE spare fuse or relay... all covers with legends missing!
    ALL robbed by dishonest mechanics or car dealers.
    Now my distribution blocks only have the needed items and the kit is not in the vehicle while at the shop.

    Thanks for the vid and part#. Great work! I'm having a very intermittent starting issue with my '04 Honda Accord LX. After coming out of the store yesterday, it took 4-5 attempts to get it to start. The first three times it struggled like it was a weak battery (but the battery is less than a year old). When I got home I could duplicate it a few times, but then today, I started it about 20x (not in successions. About 6-7 times, then took a few minutes break in between). Never got it to fail. I'm starting with the least expensive part first, hoping it's not a starter issue.

      Yes. I ended up replacing the starter on 7/11/23 and haven't had an issue since. Here's a summary of what I did (posted on another website):
      SUMMARY OF PROBLEM/SYMPTOMS AND TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
      Just to summarize everything after the repair was completed:
      This all started when the car failed to start 3x, then started (symptoms were similar to what you hear if the battery is nearly drained). Got home and got it to fail once out of about 5 tries. Cleaned battery terminals and also removed negative cable from where it attached to the car body, sanded down the body and re-terminated the negative cable to the body. No problems for a month.
      After about a month, the problem happened again, so I chose to replace the cheapest (and easiest to replace) part... the starter relay. Problem seemed to worsen, as immediately after replacing it, it wouldn't start about 3x in a row. Put the old relay back in with same symptoms. Finally got it to start with a jump from our other car.
      Drove car around a little after replacing the relay, ran it up to O'Reilly and they took their tester and said the starter, battery and alternator were good (this is with the starter still in the car). Got it home and it never started again. It would barely even try to turn over. Even a jump didn't help at this point. At someone's suggestion, (AFTER disconnecting the negative battery cable - just to play it safe), I put a ratchet and socket on one of the pulley nuts (the pulley for the serpentine belt that I believe runs all accessories) and verified I could turn the engine manually (i.e. verified the engine wasn't seized).
      Swapped identical batteries between our Honda's (both less than a year old). Both batteries started our 2014 Honda but neither would start our 2004. At this point, it was very likely the starter was bad. I pulled the starter and had O'Reilly test again. This time they said it failed to push the gear out completely and didn't seem to be spinning properly. AutoZone tested with the same results. So FYI.... a bench test and an in-car test apparently are different. I didn't really trust the in-car test.
      I replaced the starter and the car started right up.
      So, in my case, it was very sporadic until the end. But at the end, when it failed, it failed hard.
      I bought a NEW (not re-manufactured) starter from NAPA. They offer a discount if you have a AAA membership, so I got mine for $174 (after a $20 discount for being a AAA member). I also bought the manifold gasket as well. They initially handed me the wrong gasket (luckily I had the old one with me). So I'd pull the old starter first and take the old manifold gasket with me (or at least a picture).
      Hope that helps.

    Great video. I have an 04 Accord that buzzes in 3. Was able to get it to start by cycling back from 2 to 3 several times. I was thinking it was the starter solenoid failing to engage. Any way to tell if it's the ignition switch without replacing parts and hoping for the best?

    I have. 2001 Odyssey and the Factory Service manual states starter cut relay is on the back side of the under dash driver side fuse panel. It is unobtainium. The wiring harness is prevent you from easily accessing the relay. I can feel it clicking when I turn the key but it isn't always the same click as the very first one so I suspect that the relay might be bad but it is virtually almost impossible to remove easily.

  • @zerog2000
    @zerog2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks like in a pinch for troubleshooting if the relay is bad you could swap the power window relay with the starter cut relay. If starting works and power windows stop working, the. You know you have a bad relay.

    We had the relay replaced on our 2007 accord . It was fine for a month now it's clicking/buzzing when turning the key again. I'll check the transmission switch as you suggested. I wonder if the ignition switch is on it's way out? Oh yes there is a faint clicking sound coming from the relay area when driving. Sounds like a mouse is in there .

    I'm having a problem with my car if you can help me out, it's a 2007 Honda Accord and it's not starting and the symptoms are, that it has a blinking green key light which should mean that it doesn't recognize the key.
    It started when I bypass the child safety switch on the master switch while trouble shooting passenger Windows not work and there happened to be a wire I tested connected to ACG fuse.
    If you can maybe help me out and shed some light on my situation I'd appreciate it.

    • @levialby3920
      @levialby3920 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS. It does crank

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blinking green key during cranking usually means an Immobilizer (anti-theft) programming issue. Some Immobilizer systems will only shut down fuel (so it causes a crank no start) and some will shut down starter circuit as well (no crank no start). I would first try a second key and see if if there is a crank no start with that one too. I would probably also verify there are no blown fuses in all fuse boxes. The key(s) may need to be programmed again but there is a chance that control units/circuits/fuses could have been damaged during testing and may need repairs/replacement.

    Hi. Thanks for the informative video! I have a honda crv 2009 diesel with a hard start issue that has been going on for sometime, even my mechanic has given up on it. Anyway, I went to look at my ST CUT relay on the internal fuseboard to check it and its not even there! Even the FUEL PUMP relay is missing right next to it as well!? Its quite bizarre. I figured those two relays should be there so it operates correctly?
    The only relay present on my internal board has PW next to it?

    First of all, thanks for your video. On the other hand,exactly, what does a starter cut relay, do ?

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried to explain it in the beginning but typically a relay either allows a small circuit to control a larger one, or it is an easy way to add a switch. For many Hondas, the starter cut relay is an easy way to add the use of a safety switch (on this car it was a transmission range switch). Thanks for the comment!

    2012 CRV. 1st crank of the day starts but kinda slow. May or may not crank when get somewhere and come back out and try to leave. Battery brand new. Old battery tested weak but I don’t believe it was the issue. Couldn’t even jump it off. Removed cables and forgot the windows were down. Slid cables back on to roll up windows and they went right up so tried to crank the car and it cranked. What would you check initially? Thanks.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would start by verifying charging system/alternator is working properly and all connections at battery and alternator are clean and tight, and that the new battery is fully charged. Also, although not very common, a bad starter can mimic a dead battery (cranks very very slow).

    What resources do you use for your reference material and service manuals? Are they all from Honda? Do you have anything in paper or are they all pay to play type manuals?

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I pay annually for a couple of different service subscriptions including one from Honda. I don't use paper manuals anymore. Everything has gone to a subscription based model.

      Thank you for the information. I still have my six or seven inch thick 97 to 2000 Honda Civic manual. But I also have it in an electronic form. Fortunately you've been putting out videos on the same generation car that I have. Thank you for that too.
      With our 2021 Honda Pilot I figured that we couldn't get a manual for it anymore and like you said is probably subscription-based. I will check Honda out.

    I have a 2014 honda odyssey. I believe there are 2 relays, one is a starter relay and the other a starter cuttoff relay? Anyway, my intermittent problem is that when it's cold, it appears "sometimes " the starter doesn't disengage for a second or 2 creating a grinding noise most likely the gears on the starter and flywheel. Once the car has been running for a while, this won't happen again until the van has been turned off for a while. I want to try everything possible before replacing the starter. Can this starter relay or cuttoff contacts be sticking(not opening on time) causing the starter to NOT disengage? Please advise. Btw, awesome video! Thank You

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two Starter Cut Relays in the driver side under DASH fuse box on a 2014 Odyssey. Relay 1 goes to the the ECM (Engine Control Module), Relay 2 goes to the starter solenoid (both should be same part number). Starter Cut Relay 2 would be the one I would be looking at, if it doesn't make a good contact then it could cause issues with the pull in and hold in coils (but either relay could cause starting issues). Replacing relays are pretty cheap and easy compared to a new starter and it may solve the problem, but there is a good chance it is a starter issue. I would double check connections at battery first to make sure they are all clean and tight before replacing any parts.

      Ended up replacing both starter cut relays. Problem still exists. Replaced the starter and problem still exists on cold day startups. Is there an ignition relay somewhere in the circuit? ReSon I'm asking is that I found a way to not repeat that grinding noise as if the starter is not disengaging quick enough(on cold days) so, what I've been doing is pressing the ignition button a few times and holding it in without applying the brake. I then start it normally and the noise is minimal. I'm thinking another type of relay in the crkt is sticking until voltage is applied, or the ignition button cld be bad. New ignition buttonnis 250 dollars and I'd hate to replace this as well if the problem is another relay which is much cheaper. Please advise. Thank You
