    Let me give you an Amen on this video! Probably the most important video you will ever post. I have a 1948 M Farmall with narrow wheels on front end. I have spent countless hours on this tractor for about 35 years, tinkering with it, getting off and standing beside it while it was running or starting it, always checking that it was out of gear if starting it while standing beside it. A few months ago, I got off tractor after running it awhile, it was idling too fast. standing in front of rear wheels in front of carb, in a hurry, fixated on getting that idle correct. I had a bushhog hooked to it. I reached over and turned the switch to crank and it started forward in 2nd gear. Rear tires bumped me and I only had time to run out of way of it. It slowly veered to the left down toward the woods. Since it had the bushhog behind it, I let it go instead of trying to jump on it from the rear. Luckily, before it reached the woods, it reached a large pine log that I had lying on ground. The front wheels jumped over the log but the rear wheels just slowly started spinning against the log. I jumped over and yanked the coil wire off and shut off the tractor.
    I don't smoke, but if there had been a cigarette around I would have lit one up after that!
    So, it goes to show no matter how many times you think to push it out of gear before starting, there is always the possibility that one time you may forget and that very well could be tragic!
    Since it has an electric start from then on, I always get up on seat to crank the tractor. That's my story, kind of embarrassing but shows that I had been lucky in remembering all those years to take it out of gear and really lucky when it did happen to not be injured! God gave me a second chance and split second wisdom to let the tractor crash into the woods if had be instead of trying to jump onto it to save it. Let it go!

    Thanks for doing this video ! My 4630 Ford will start in gear. I work out here alone far from help so Ive had to remind myself to do it right.
    My Grandfather told me when I was little that "you might get away with a bad habit for 20 years or it might Hurt you the very next time you do it." "Take the time to do it right."

    Hope the guy is ok! It's a good reminder. I learned this the hard way when I was a kid, although I was not quite so complacent, with a family friend's old Farmall A. You had to start start that tractor with the crank--I can't remember whether it even had electric start. I did reach up and waggle the gearshift and I thought it was in neutral. However, there was quite a bit more play in the shifter than we had on our own Farmalls, so it felt ok to me. I walked around, cranked it, and it started in gear! However, I got lucky. I went to back up, tripped, and fell on my butt. Just then the tractor stalled. I briefly gave thanks to my Maker, then did what we all do right after surviving doing something dumb. I looked around to make sure no one was looking! No one else was around, so I learned this particular lesson and got to skip the ridicule. Whew.

    Just had this happen last Saturday with our 1953 Ford NAA. Thank god it was really in reverse and I hit the clutch promptly! If I hadn’t it may have gone through the back wall, which would have been bad on several points as the new buyer for the tractor was due to arrive in less than an hour AND we we closing on the property that afternoon. I would have had lots of explaining to do then! I just decided to ALWAYS be in the drivers seat from now on when starting them.

    I learned that lesson with my grandfather with starting his 1948 Cub. He for years always left it in neutral, and I as a 9 year old kid had been messing with the shifter and put it in reverse before asking him to start it and teach me how to drive it. He proceeded to start the tractor without checking for neutral and it drove itself backwards through the barn smashing multiple small things including a pair of vintage bicycles in the process. We were both fine but scared the crap out of us! Never started a tractor without checking for neutral since!

    That is why there are so many safety switches on modern tractors. There is a switch on the seat so if you get off the tractor shuts down. There is one on the transmission so you can't start if it is in gear. One on the PTO so if you get off the tractor it shuts down. I grew up around tractor and heavy equipment all my life. There are many people today buying tractor that know nothing about them. I was a mechanic for a John Deere dealer and saw a lot of this first hand. Great thing about TH-cam is it is a great place to get information. If you buy a tractor do some research and learn about them so you can stay safe. Great video.

    A guy that use to buy calves in north east Montana. His son was hooping up a battery charger to a JD 4440 I think. The charger clamp hit the solenoid terminal on the starter, the tractor started, went up against a concrete wall in the machine shed. The son got killed. I think that the dad quit buying calves. That happened because the tractor was not in park, the fuel shut off was in the run position, the throttle lever was not at minimum idle speed, the son hooking up the booster charger with the charger on, the charger contacted the battery terminal of the starter solenoid and the solenoid terminal. This happened before 1990, because in 1990 I was putting shields on John Deeres. From 1010 to the 8640 series, I think, that was 30 years ago. Now you know why that hateful shield is in your way when you go to work on starter wires.
    The father use to buy my neighbors calves every fall.
    Stay safe!

    80W90 is fine in the rear end. Never leave a running tractor in gear, that's the moral of the story. That's how my dad and I were taught. My grandpa used to get really angry with anyone who did leave a tractor in gear. Hand start tractors you don't have the option of starting the tractor from the seat. My dad, all his siblings and I learned to drive the same 1944 W-4, which is equipped with a magneto, and they have a spot to carry a crank in the frame on the left side, so if the battery is weak, we crank it. Where the crank is carried on them, you're nowhere near the gear shift, so it's very important to ensure that when you leave the tractor, you leave it in neutral. When we run the grain auger with a typically with a W-4 or Super-W-4, we always start from the front and leave the PTO in gear. The reason we do that, is another huge danger: a rotating PTO shaft. With the older Farmalls and standard tread tractors, You don't have the option of mounting or dismounting up front. So we leave PTO in gear, and start from up front, and that eliminates the danger of getting entangled in the PTO. But, I'm going to say you have the right idea but the wrong lesson: The right lesson is never leave a tractor in gear. It's a good idea to both never start from the side and never leave it in gear. It's also important to ensure the tractor is in neutral first, which, it always should be.

    Appreciate your safety video. Grew up on a farm, seen many farmers when hitching a drawbar. Leave ignition switch off and bump the starter for that perfect pin position. One day it happened, the tractor started and could have killed the guy but he was lucky. At break we sat around trying to understand what happened. Only thing we came up with was he must have killed the tractor before he got off to put in the pin,so it was ready to start. John Deere and other hand clutch tractors claimed many serious and fatal accidents when hitching an implement.

    when I was a kid, dad had a Graham Bradly, it had a 6 cylinder Continental I think it was,, anyway, in the winter, the gear oil was so thick that we had to start it with the clutch pushed in and slowly let the clutch out or it would actually kill the engine, and shortly the oil would get thin enough that it would sit and idle in neutral. times were rough back then, we couldn't afford to change engine oil regularly so dad just had straight 30 wt oil, and in the winter we had to put a pan of hot coals from the heating stove under the pan for a while so the engine would start.

    My dad bought a 1953 Ferguson TO30 new. It had 4 forward gears, reverse and a start position on the shifter.There was a selenoid inside the top of the transmission that the shifting fork hit. Turn the key on, move the shift lever to the right and up to start, no way to start the tractor in gear. None the less it is a really good idea to be in the saddle when you start any equipment.

    Growing up on the farm,we would frequently start our tractor by coasting down our hill and let out the clutch with the tractor in gear. Just another routine procedure. My uncle bought a 3920 JD power shift tractor. It was hooked to the baler with a wagon in tow. I did the same thing as usual, planning to bump start the tractor. Much to my surprise, I found out that JD had no brakes or steering, and couldn't be bump started. My dad never found out how close I came to damaging that new tractor.

He went to disconnect the hay wagon and somehow the tractor went into gear as he was going to get back on.

When I got dropped off to pick it up and drive it back to the farm, the shop owner was livid with me for leaving the tractor in gear with the hand clutch pushed in. He was going to start it and run it out side and leave it running for me. I to this day do not know why he tried to start it from the ground. It fired right up and almost took the end of his shop out. It was always my fault with him when infant, he did a very foolish thing and was lucky enough to live to be mad at me and blame me.

      We use 80W-90 and it works fine. We have a 1944 W-4 which is the standard tread version of the H. It has been in the family for 70 years. We're in Alberta, Canada. My grandpa farmed a half section of land with just that tractor for 11 years and still used it heavily after that. It was overloaded constantly, pulled a 3 bottom plow, hooked to a packer wheel and a Pony drill behind. It powered a wooden 28X46" threshing machine with all babbit bearings. It ran in the coldest days of the winter and the warmest days in the summer. It has at least 50000 hours. Dad rebearinged the transmission in 1988 and it had all the original bearings throughout. It probably ran 90 oil in the rear end all that time. There were no synthetics in those days, but the little tractor still runs just fine.

    What sucks is the old two cylinder model B deeres you have to start from the ground. You have to choke it at the carb and set your decompression cocks from the ground too. The only saving grace is the hand clutch and the way the gear pattern is arranged they’re difficult to accidentally pop into gear.

I had a friend back in the early 70's who had a wire attached to the gear shift because it was jumping out gear , he took it out of gear and climbed down and walked in front of the rear wheel, when he reached across the wire he put it in gear by tension on the wire. Tractor ran over him was in plowed field and it turned just in time for the wheel to roll off his shoulder and miss his head.. he walked away badly shaken , bruised and Lucky .

    If you have time I could use a little guidance. Just bought 2 Farmall 140 tractors. Both are 6V and the book says 6V should be positive ground. One I'm working on has negative ground and appears to be charging well with the generator. Both tractors were listed as "restored". Other tractor I haven't got to yet is the positive ground.Both have new regulators. From what I understand it is possible to change the charging orientation of a generator by a simple arc of the field post.Should I leave the negative ground as it is or dig deeper? My concern is eventual damage to coil and/or capacitor.One with negative ground is running as smooth as silk.

    • @FarmallFanatic
      @FarmallFanatic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By running it with a negative ground, you are losing about 20% of your spark efficency. Hook it up as a positive ground, polarize it & it should have better performance...that's probably what the previous owner did... If you are not having problems with either, don't touch them.

    • @amossnowdaharleyman9179
      @amossnowdaharleyman9179 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FarmallFanatic Thank you very much! Little engine is running as smooth as can be. Only load test I can do so far is traversing up inclines: governor working well and tractor seems to pull the inclines well. I'll leave it like it is for now. Thanks again! Got videos up if you want to see them. The one I'm talking about has shifter issue that I'm working through.

    • @tyfrank3427
      @tyfrank3427 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The generator can charge either way. Some regulators can work either polarity, usually the 6V ones are positive ground only. It should be marked on the regulator. To change the polarity of the charging system on the one that appears to be negative ground, hook it up positive ground and take a piece of wire with bared ends and momentarily short it between the BAT term and the GEN terminal on the regulator. This polarizes the charging system.

    • @tyfrank3427
      @tyfrank3427 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also it is important to confirm the coil is polarized right. If it's positive ground, the + terminal of the coil must be hooked to the distributor and the power from the ignition switch must be hooked to the - terminal. On negative ground, hook it opposite.

    Rule number one: only start your tractor from your seat. There are two exceptions to that rule a hand crank start or the John Deere flywheel start. I have seen it happen where a big strong guy could start a cranked engine with it in gear but he wasn't lined up with a tire. A John Deere was a different story with it's hand clutch because you had to disengage the clutch to stop moving then stop the engine so your clutch was disengaged except for the nimrod who left it engaged but then the flywheel was so hard to move you couldn't get it started. Your air cleaner is called an oil bath air cleaner..The service interval is daily. Take the bowl off and dump the oil in the used oil barrel, clean out the dirt ( I usually used a screwdriver), clean the bowl with gasoline to get the remaining oil and dirt out and fill to the mark with fresh oil and remount it to the tractor. The oil bath cleaner was a very effective air cleaner but it had to be serviced every day. Now the paper air filter isn't serviced for weeks.

    Another hazard to antique tractors is the hand clutch type. John deere had them J.I Case had them we have a hand clutch on a Case DC and a Case SC. I can remember many times my grandfather would back the SC up to some equipment and wasn't close enough so standing behind the tractor he would touch the clutch to creep it back so he could hook up all it would have taken was the clutch to get pushed forward enough to lock and the tractor would have kept on going. How he never got hurt is beyond me but again that is another hazard with antique tractors in my opinion. Today we always have someone in the seat and someone hook up, just a more safe way to do it.

    Many years ago I had a college Prof accidentally die when his tractot rolled over onto him. Roll over accidents with tractors are not unusual, but he had to be unique in how he did it. He got a chainsaw stuck in a tree limb he was pruning. He got his tractor and attached a chain to the 3pt top link bracket. He then proceeded to flip the tractor over on top of himself. If he attached to the drawbar, or some other lower spot on the tractor it probably would not have happened.
