- A Maori politician performed an unexpected Haka in the middle of a government proceeding. The co-leader of the Maori Party, Rawiri Waititi, pledged allegiance to his descendants, all young people, and to the country’s founding document, The Treaty of Waitangi, in accordance with Maori practices and values. Then Waititi performed a Haka while walking toward the clerk of Parliament for the government pledge to King Charles III. Inside Edition Digital’s TC Newman has more.
It's their native land, no? Then they should absolutely continue to know/use their native tongue. That doesn't mean they haven't also learned English as well.
Also, I see no problem with anyone speaking their native tongue with family and friends when living in another country, so long as they know that country's language as well, and can converse with the public there. If I lived in another country that didn't speak English, I would learn that language, but I would also continue to speak English at home, and when out and about with family and English speaking friends.
It is our land, and Maori is Aotearoa’s mother tongue.
hes a show pony an act
@@arepaponga-oldIt used to be their land. Just like native Americans used to have their land. Just like Palestine had their land. The brits ruined many lives.
Half Hawaiian and half Mexican myself... as a fellow Polynesians and fellow native person living one the lands of my people, I stand with my Māori cousins across the Pacific! Ke aloha nui i nā ʻōiwi o Aotearoa, much love from us Hawaiians to the Māoris on Aotearoa.

Dang, Half Hawaiian and Half Mexican, that's an interesting mix if you don't mind me saying.😄Never heard of such a mix, lol.😅Out of curiosity, were you born in Hawaii? I'm just Mexican-American (Chicano) myself, not mixed with anything, and I was born in California.😁🙂

how can you be indigenous when by your own words you came over in canoes and forced the people who were here before you over to the Chathams? Secondly why do you not use you real name?....as I do????
Bro I hear you, I’m Tahitian and I swear I hope you guys will get through this. We have the chance to have 70% natives here. Faaitoito!

@@steveosullivan4211 your first question is nonsense and shows me you have done no research before asking the question.
They did not arrive in New Zealand first, and originated from the same islands as Maori, no archaeological evidence was ever found to show human habitation before the first Maori arrived.
Also to say (Maori killed them) is not an accurate statement (one tribe killed a lot of them) is more of an accurate statement.
(They did not kill all of them)...
Your second question has nothing to do with the subject matter, so it is irrelevant.
I think you should stop believing what you listen to and what you want to believe, do some research so you don't make incorrect statements.
@@worldnewsvideosreally! New Zealand doesn't need people making comparisons between the two.
This is a peaceful country and I would like to keep it that way.
What Maori needs is media coverage and support, not somebody making a bad comparison.
That's really cool I like that this got coverage because I didn't know who the maori people were or what Haka is. There should be more stories like this in the news that educate instead of divide and provoke
The Haka is also performed in Hawaii but called the Ha’a, therefore part of US Culture too. The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football team perform it before games as well
So happy to see the Maori preserving and celebrating their native culture!
Do you think they should get rid of the Maori Party in parliament
@@MysteriousPerson1447 No, why would they do that
@@EvanS.05 even my parents doesn't like them

Why is that? Please share of why they feel that way? Asking from the States over here.
Remove the Maori Parlament but not the Maori Parties (ain't no party like a Haka Party cuz a Haki party don't stahhhpp)
So happy to see people who stands for their Culture and Language and never give up ❤

I just love how badass every indigenous person in that room looks

I like it because to me, he is pledging allegiance to his people, culture and language, before he pledge allegiance to another entity.
All the drama and then allegiance to King Charles, signed so as to get paid.
That man's got drip
Interesting it’s important to be respectful to other unique cultures and appreciate differences ❤godbless
Says who? You Godly fair mother? C'mon now
Great respect for the Māori people - why would anyone need to be respectful to any king on the other side of the planet who robbed their country? It's a shame - greetings from Switzerland
A WIN for the Māori people. I am inspired by their authenticity!
What is the point of this? They took your land and they gave u a small voice.
Don't forget Maui. They burned those peeps alive foe their land and Oprah could only give a Million dollar when she's a billionaire. You might think that's a lot and it is. But when she has so much money. That's not even 10% of her wealth. That's say a lot about her and her intentions.
No point, pure drama.
The creature is a sorcerer casting spells on the hobbit.🪄
Before the English came the Maori were best known for cannibalism.
Do you think cannibalism also existed in England and other parts of Europe? Archeologists seem to think so through their findings over the years.
I mean I know it's like... their whole thing, but isnt the Haka a war dance? Doesn't that mean he's challenging the other politicians to something? Like they do in sport or something? Isn't Haka just being confrontational? Like, you know, showing respect to your opponent by demonstrating you're scary. I know it's the highest honor, but... I don't know if a place of government is the right context...?
Only in the civilized world is there support for others. In backward civilizations, there is only hatred, war, fury, and death. When Europeans began to civilize some parts of the world in a state of extreme moral degradation, such specimens resisted. When sailors stranded on one of their islands, they were devoured. I thought the world had overcome that stage, but it seems I was mistaken: some people do not want to live civilized lives.
On average there is a haka performed every 37 seconds in New Zealand. A haka used to be something special but nowdays they find any old reason to do one. Cuzzy Steven has arrived at the airport....let´s do a haka. They opened up a new library at school.....let´s do a haka. Auntie Moana just made her best banana cake ever.....let´s do a haka.
Baffles me when I see people from overseas compliment in a respectful fashion about Maori language and culture. Yet a high percentage of our fellow; mostly older European citizens, find them archaic and threatening ... Mauri ora
Looks like Leon Schuster to me with one of his disguise🤷♂️
Nothing like watching a reenactment of the peak of maori culture from 150+ years ago

Seems like New Zealand and the British found a way to integrate Māori culture well.
In the middle of a civilized government proceeding...proceeds to act out war chant meant to intimidate your enemies before you kill them LOL
Hell ya. I remember when Isreal Adesanya got the Haka after that 2nd fight againat Alex Peraira in the UFC. Such a cool thing to watch. And i watched this video about the soldiers in world war 1 i believe. They performed the Haka before playing against the enemy in soccer during a cese fire on christmas i believe.
In rugby they do, not football

What's this Parliament Got talent? Interesting performance
Would you call people singing at the church a performance? Would you say somebody praying is performing? This was ceremonial not a performance.
@@Catnipfumar it can be seen as performance because the dude is dancing and hollering in some beat.. 0:12 like he is in rhythm & looks ok.
@@Catnipfumar People like the commenter do not respect other's culture. They think anything they do not understand is an attempt to exclude them. Except when a man is in a kilt playing bagpipes then they claim it's "traditional" "ceremonial" "riveting"
well said. I don't like bagpipes but I never stand up and scream about it when I've gone to a funeral of a fallen soldier here and the United States. They bought themselves sofas? Seriously? 😂
They need Lazy-boyz. Cheee-whoooo!
I'm enjoying this dance routine and trying it out in my town in Alaska. My fellow Eskimos thinks it's cool (cold) to do Hakka in the extreme cold. Think I'll catch meself some cod fish for dinner first...brrrr
That behavior would be a little startling and might seem very out of place, but it might be helpful to remember that it was their country before the power hungry British murdered and subjugated their ancestors.
The Haka is well excepted in New Zealand culture, my 5 year old and 8 year old daughters learn the dances in school
Not Maori, but I always support people who practice their culture and language in their countries❤
In Maori culture a Haka is a spiritual middle finger to the ones receiving it. If we know this then why do we allow it!!. If we don't know this. Do some research into Maori culture and beliefs
very interesting... too bad they're so unknown and unrecognized.
I forgot New Zealand was not independent. Yikes
Not the place or time. Just someone chasing his 15 minutes of fame!!!
Thats what they call progress, you see.
Give Aoteroa back to the Māori and give Hawaii back to the Kanaka Maoli

Yep . Screaming Maori for every meeting is just a waste of time. At this point all they want is attention
@@UreTriggered Attention is the only way your voice can be heard.

Time and a place for everything if you want to communicate effectively. Since most dont even know maori its a bit offensive to take it into Parliament where only the minority know what the hell is being said. We speak English thanks.
Just another case of attention grabbing.
Is the Haka always the same or is it some form of interpretive dance? It seems to be too complicated to be completely choreographed.
that guy is a show pony
Oh prince Henry 😮
New zealand parliament is just a circus now
Ridiculous 😂😂😂 they still have to swear loyalty to the crown😂😂😂
They have to or else the Treaty will be null and void which eventually NZ will as soon as Australia decides to go republic as well cos NZ always take the cue from cousin Australia, one thing about this Treaty was it provide equal status among tribal Maori cos they were constantly fighting and the British has the rule of law in place that provides security and stablity among the maori and now that NZ is a multinational country is would apply that all man, woman, child regardless of creed, nationality, religion or race will have the same equal rights,
You can thank Ardern for that, N.Z. is split in 2 now.
Enough with the haka.
At least, maintain the decorum of the parliament
I thought my man was about to pull up some rugby haka lol
Love this!
That's right, you respect the UK king.
Colonization in 2023 still???
They still swore allegiance to the king, just not first

It's pretty cringe to see the Haka done in Parliament though, isn't it supposed to be done outside or in a primitive hut or whatever they had in New Zealand prior to European colonization?

I absolutely love The Haka.
My old high school has a large Polynesian influence. The football team always performed The Haka after every game. All 50-60 players giving full volume performances was spectacular. The crowd would get INTO it! Even if it was a boring blowout game, I always stayed till the end, so I could see them do it up.
