    The name of the haka is Tika Tonu (translation, "What's right is always right.)" It is not a war or battle haka as so often mentioned in the comments. It usually used to mark a right of passage e.g. boyhood to adulthood, graduation or in this case a wedding. This haka is performed by the groom's side of the family welcoming the bride into their midst and expressing their unconditional support for the couple.

      I mean the haka is both a war dance and a ceremonial dance. I remember seeing a translated version of this same video and the actual words the men and women are saying at something to the affect of “don’t carry your burdens alone anymore, share them with us since you are joining our family”
      Plus the haka runs off of pure energy that humans have held onto since the beginning of our species that we should tap into a little more honestly. If traditions like this can affect us this much, why not conduct them more often and document it for others to see?

    This Haka is called Tika Tonu. It is a Maori haka and was written in the Hawkes Bay, New Zealand in 1914 by a chief named Waimarama Puhara. He wrote it for his son and it is about the transition from boy to man.

      In my town, the white man isn't stopping Aboriginals from expressing their culture. In fact, we have laws to protect it, and we spend a ton of white people's tax money to place Aboriginal symbolism all over the town, but the Aboriginals enjoy Subway sandwiches and alcohol too much to care. Turns out modern white man is the only ones trying to protect your own culture from yourselves abandoning it.

      Areus White It really makes me sad, especially for the aboriginal people who are trying to spread their culture, when some aboriginals just don't care at all. I'd really like to see the Australian sports teams do the aboriginal war dances before games and for normal Aussies to do it at everyday celebrations like weddings, funerals and birthdays like Kiwis do with the Haka. It would help Australians understand the aboriginal culture and it could intimidate other teams and it would make the start of Australia New Zealand games absolutely mind blowing. I don't see anything wrong with that.

    Sure, sometimes the facial expressions are “funny” I get that. But you can just tell how much it means to the bride and groom by their faces at 0:23. Not to mention it’s just so fascinating, and just...an expression of raw emotion. A group expression of raw emotion. So cool. What an amazing way to honor their culture at their wedding. And the bride and groom themselves.

    This is a celebration of a great culture of navigators, mariners and warriors, in many respects very much like the great culture of my ancestors, the Norsemen, they found their way to Greenland and Vinland, like the Maori found their way to almost the exact polar opposite of Scandinavia, New Zealand. The more I think about it the more our ancestral cultures look alike, while at the same time a world apart. Maybe one day a Viking can witness a Haka and celebrate two late Mediaeval cultures that still move their desendants to great pride of their cultural achievements, now I amgoing to watch this video again.

      Let me explain myself, I lived for years on a tropical Island in the caribean, and the people there have a hard time living, and you can name a thousand reasons, racist and non-racist alike. In the end there is but one reason, pride, we Europeans have been utterly effective in erasing everything that can bring any nation to feel pride in their ancestry, from the 1500s onwards we Europeans have systematically destroyed every legacy (and legacy should be read as ancestral guidance), from which these people could draw the strength to resist their enslavement. When you now look around the world, where Europeans can live with and are accepted by the native populations, you will discover that all these native cultures were capable of resisting the European cultural forces, but the people in the carribean have after 400 years of enslavement only managed to hold on to their music, they do not know where in Africa they originated, they have lost all connection to their ancestral tribes, some of which created vast kingdoms even before the Europeans came.......
      Or to say it New Zealand style, we have robbed them from the most basic means to determine their Identity, they can no longer say: "I am Gimli son of Gloin"

    • @matthewharbour6276
      @matthewharbour6276 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RzzRBladez I am not quite sure why you would feel the need to explain that. I do not want to assume anything o I am just asking why so I can better understand your point.

    • @RzzRBladezofoccham
      @RzzRBladezofoccham 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Matthew Harbour
      Losing your culture, can only ever make a lesser man, or lesser woman. For years I have lived among people, good people, but with an unnatural inferiority complex, certainly towards Europeans like me, freeing them in 1864 has virtually changed nothing, their behaviour towards white people is as if they are still enslaved. And for some it means always being over-polite, but for others it turns to resentment. There is an unnatural unequality that makes working and living with these people really diificult, I felt like I always had to tip toe my way around.
      Like I said it is really difficult to explain, black people living in the USA have taken the culture of the USA as part of their culture and you see that they fare much better than most people on the islands, where the black population is often greater than 90%.You must understand that I never understood the importance of culture until I was confronted with a virtual lack of culture.
      At first, before I let my brain work, I got annoyed with these people, only later when I slowly got absorbed into their way of living I started to see the real damage done by the Europeans, I do not possess the means to describe exactly what I mean, I am a historian, not an anthropologist, but when you start trying to speak their language and when they open up to you you can start connecting the dots and then you can see that freeing the slaves in 1864, though the right thing to do, has been utterly incomplete and we do not have the means to ever make it complete.
      So when I compare the people I lived with to the Maori, I can both understand the dificulties, though not on a personal level, as that I can really appreciate them holding on to everthing they inherited from the ancestors, since I have seen first hand the abhorrent effects of slavery still affecting people to this day.
      People often step over culture as if it is meaningless, nothing can be further from the truth.........

It's personally not a culture I understand, yet there is something deeply intriguing about it. It's a credit to NZ that they've managed to retain many facets of their indigenous culture, whereas other Western countries such as the US or Australia hasn't necessarily.
      For me it's indicative of the richness and uniqueness of our human race, we are so incredibly varied and have many far-ranging different cultures and traditions. I for one have nought but respect and appreciation for this.

In other words they have indigenous blood in them due to eother of their parents being of indigenous descent. I lived in New Zealand before. At the beginning I felt weird when I saw Haka in occasions like sport games, graduation ceremonies, or even a normal Saturday morning near my house. Maori are just normal New Zealand people, of course they would not have such facial expression, body gestures in daily life. But Haka seems a sign for them about the unity of the family. So I guess the bride saw her family do it on her wedding day to remind them they are family, and she is moved.

    The "forehead kiss" is actually called a Hongi and it signifies the meeting of two people and exchanging of breaths (your life force with another) also the face is tapu (sacred) in my culture so to do that is with up most sincerity and love for the other individual, it's like the ultimate hello. The haka is tiki tane and its about growing up I think. But overall this is the brides family saying welcome to the whanau!
