One of my favourite scenes in Heat is when Detective Vincent Hanna is in his car driving down the freeway towards Neil McCauley and his Cadillac for their meeting while the awesome Moby cover of the Joy Division song A New Dawn Fades is playing !

The Dark Knights opening scene was inspired by Heat, as was the tone of TDK.

There’s a lot more tying them together than that. The entire dynamic between joker and Batman is the same dynamic as Pacino and DeNiro

The fire fight was choreographed by Andy McNab, formerly of the SAS. It was used as a start point for weapons handling, tactical withdrawal and fire discipline when I joined the army. I remember leading an assault on an enemy position on exercise and all I could think of was McAuley shouting "MOVE!" between 3 round bursts of fire. I did the same, and my Teacher afterwards said it was one of the most aggressive and fast moving infantry assaults he'd ever seen. That made my day...!

And yet another character actor in this is Xander Berkeley (Ralph) who is the poor schlub who Hanna’s wife is just using to piss him off. He was the step father to John Connor in T2, Gregory in the Walking Dead, so many roles. This cast was just majestic

Great review as usual gentleman. small side point that no one seems to mention when talking about this movie is that it is actually a remake. Michael Mann wrote and directed a TV movie back in 1989 called L.A. takedown that is basically heat in 90mins. Even has the same character names and definitely worth seeing as a companion piece to this classic.

  • @stevestreet2825

One of my favorite movies. So many people have forgotten and/or given this film poor ratings and/or saying it it so slow moving. What I always try to bring to attention is that this film tries to present the lives/views of multiple persons involved in a crime thriller which this film does so very well. With the excellent cinematography, music score, very recognizable cast with outstanding acting and you have one of the most enjoyable and re-watchable films in American cinema. Thank you for putting this together and sharing.

Supposedly this movie inspired the two bank robbers whose armed rampage became known as the North Hollywood Shootout which ended with one robber blowing his brains out and the other getting shot in the legs 20 times being handcuffed and left to slowly bleed to death for 70 minutes.
Wayne Grove didn't just screw over the crew, his killing of that security guard could have gotten them all a death sentence if they'd been arrested.

Thought you were gonna not mention Chris's (Val Kilmer) arc, but you did after the ending. He is the only one to get away yes, BUT...they made a point to have him mention his absolute love for his wife & son in the film and now he must move on never again seeing them. That part got me the most, the heartbreak of both of their reactions and the fantastic score that went with the scene as without any dialogue you see the pain on both Kilmer & Ashley Judd's faces.

  • @hpa2005

Believe it or not: Neil McCauley was a real person
To add to the above: "Heat" came about after Michael Mann had a conversation with former Chicago Police Detective Charles F. "Chuck" Adamson (1936 - 2008). Back in the early to mid 60s, Det. Adamson was part of an elite squad in the CPD and started keeping tabs on McCauley after his release from prison. The famous coffee shop scene in the movie happened between Det. Adamson and McCauley after Det. Adamson literally bumped into McCauley outside a dry cleaners after picking up a shirt he had there. Adamson admitted that "I didn't know whether to arrest him or shot him." before inviting him to get coffee. While sitting in the coffee shop with McCauley, Adamson said to him "Why don't you go somewhere else and cause trouble?" to which McCauley replied "I like Chicago"

You guys are killing me with the inaccuracies and misinterpretations. The precious metals depository was just another for-profit job; it wasn't them stealing materials for the next job (they still did the job after walking away). Also, they weren't selling the bearer bonds back to Van Zant for "quadruple the price"; they were selling them back for pennies on the dollar, betting that he was a bottom line businessman instead of a gangster. And the driver didn't hate working at the restaurant quote "because he just got out of prison"; he hated it because his boss was crooked and was stealing part of his check in return for not falsely reporting him as a thief, drunk, etc. to his parole officer.

Yeah i always saw this as that good action crime movie that's really long, but i felt like there are better ones out there and if i wanted to see a long action crime movie i usually went for The Godfather, Scarface or The Untouchables which in my opinion are better then Heat. You should also check out Mann's L.A. Takedown (1989). It's very much like a prototype of Heat made for television. (I'm halfway through the video so if you mention this in my near future... well shit.)

Don't forget that Michael Mann cut his teeth on tv, making such classics like Miami Vice (you know, the version that didn't suck) and my fave CRIME STORY -- that show puts most police crime shows to shame nowadays with how they handled the Chicago and later Las Vegas backdrops.
As for Heat, not much to say. It's a bucket list movie. =)
