    Holy shit you guys actually did Barry Lyndon, congratulations on your first Kubrick film! I watch this one almost annually, it just makes you go through so much emotion and its absoluly stunning. An absolute masterpiece.

    Barry Lyndon, is the most beautiful film of all time. A moving oil painting, it touches me the exact way all great art does, on a gut level, with literal goose flesh..

    The accountant in this film is also Alex's father in A Clockwork Orange and Delbert Grady in The Shining, so I guess that makes him the actor to appear in the most Kubrick films

      He's tied with Joe Turkel who was in The Killing, Paths of Glory, and The Shining.

    One of the best movies to depict the change from young naive romantic to world weary cynicism. Fabulous. So fellas, could this be the beginning of a Kubrick binge?

    • @matthias_samahl1266

      I certainly hope so, i vote Eyes Wide Shut next.

      Those two go together well. Both about wealth, power and money. All his films have similar themes really no matter how different.

    • @pantaleonpizzaparte3338
      @pantaleonpizzaparte3338 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not sure that I agree that he descends into cynicism. My interpretation is that he struggles to maintain his romanticism and principles despite his circumstances. At every point he is faced with the dilemma of standing by what he feels to be right and what is most practical. In the end I think he comes out as being more romantic than cynical. Think of the ending - he fires off target as well to give his stepson a chance. If that is not the most gentlemanly romantic thing you can possibly do I don't know what is.

    • @elfboy29
      @elfboy29 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. Perhaps more a journey from innocence to experience. The contrast between his passionate first love and his calculated later marriage. Something died in him after that and maybe he wanted to die in the duel.

    This is one of my all time favorite films, a similar film in look and style which is equally often overlooked and also ironically by another much celebrated director is The Duellists by Ridley Scott :)

    • @robzilla730
      @robzilla730 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Scott seemed to parallel Kubrick. Gladiator was his Spartacus. Duellists was his Barry Lyndon. ALIEN was his 2001, etc...

    Yeah, I went a long time avoiding this movie, a few years ago I decided to check it out and it is now probably my favorite Kubrick film. I want to watch it right now in fact.

    Your review really did a first rate job of helping me get a better understanding of the inner working of this excellent movie. I loved it when it first came out but I wasn't quite sure why, other than the fact that Marissa Berenson's beauty just blew me away. I was wondering if you were ever going to mention the fact that all the lighting was 100% natural or candlelight, but you finally did.

    Great review! You guys should review Stanley Kubrick's last film, the erotic drama "Eyes Wide Shut (1999)". I don't think it's talked about much these days but it looks on par with his best films, like the visuals, intense colors, costume design, and cinematography.

  • @certifiedscott
    @certifiedscott 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Definitely guilty of dismissing this one based purely on the fact it's a dress period type drama. Of all Kubricks movies, this is the only one I've never watched. Time to correct that, and find out what I was missing!

    I watched it when I was in my 18th century rabbit hole. Saw the marching British Grenadier song scene. It is so good.
    His whole character journey is beaten down so badly, the only way is up and be sympathetic to him. By the last act, he is such a douche that you still feel bad for him yet hate him for what he’s become.

    Great video, great review and great movie! I would just disagree at the end. Lady Lyndon is sitting with her son handling their ruined finances. She see's Barry's name and is reminded of old times. She reminisces for a few seconds before Lord Bullington catches her gaze. She snaps out of her fantasy and goes back to the paperwork.

    NASA didn't design the lens "for" Kubrick, they already had it. He had a Mitchell BNC camera specially modified to use it though.

    Every frame of this movie could be put in a museum. My experience with this movie is that I never liked Redman. He was a whiny, self-involved shithead. That being said, I never fail to see too much of myself in him. To me, this movie is a love letter to 18th and 19th century painting, from a passionate, adoring and stunning genius.

    Notice that none of the characters in the film look very happy. They are figures depressed by a society that values heightened civility and fleeting romanticism, when in fact we are still very much apes at our core vying for survival.
    2001: A Space Odyssey explored technological advancement. Barry Lyndon explores sociological advancement.
    Redmond at the beginning is a clever, resourceful fellow with a fire in his belly for social mobility. This requires him to adapt and overcome by being a scoundrel. He marries the beautiful heiress and procreates with her. So once he achieves the vaunted social advancement, Redmond then becomes sloth and given to degenerate gambling catastrophically in financial debt. Being a scoundrel was his ticket to aristocracy, but also his personal downfall. In the end, that is all he was.
    Being Moonwatcher’s homo sapien forebear, Redmond Barry’s means of advancement was stymied when it became more about personal growth within a given social constraint than a quest for the survival of his clan group (family). This is merely one trade off of living in a highly advanced civilization.
