Prince of darkness, 1987. Arguably the most underrated and underappreciated John Carpenter movie ever. A diamond in the rough, a gem . Intriguing story and one of the great things that John Carpenter does...he challenges the audience to pay attention to his movie and think. One of his best soundtracks. JC if you’re listening out there please do a live version of dead space. I’ve heard the rumors that you were very interested in doing so, go for it. Thanks off-the-shelf reviews for the reload.

I'd rather him make his opus, the genre he got into filmmaking he never really got to make, a Western.

It's easy to call that guy a stalker, but people always forget that before the smart phone you had to meet people in person.
It wasn't uncommon to meet someone and say "hey I've seen you around, nice to meet you." Or something like that.
You went to a bar and met complete strangers and went home with them. And it wasn't weird. You might even see the same woman around several weekends in a row and then work up the nerve to finally say hello. That was quite common.
It just bugs me that people today will call it stalking. When that's just how you used to meet people.

That shot @ 35:53 haunted me for _years_ after seeing this movie in the cinema. It's so visually striking; creepy, oddly beautiful, a piece of art, and also hits you as incredibly sad and heroic when it happens. The last act of the film is masterfully edited and paced. Prince of Darkness has always been one of Carpenter's most underrated films, but it's one of my favorites of his.

Horror movies that take place in one location always have the best atmosphere. The Apocalypse trilogy is great, off course The Thing is the best one.

Why the caterpillar 'stache? Brian's moustache is easily explained. In 1987 Jameson Parker was a TV star (Simon & Simon). I believe he grows the awesome flavor saver to seperate the movie character from his TV character.

It's weird... I always 'rediscover' this movie, and I'm like "Oh yeah, this! Let's pop it in!". And then it's simultaneously better than I remembered and not as good as my initial excitement suggests. Then it just slips my mind for another couple years.

This is one of my favorites. A nihilistic movie where all faith fails. Doesn't matter if it is spiritual or scientific. The apocalypse trilogy is an amazing body of work by Carpenter and it is sad that none of those movies performed well commercially.

I agree, it is an interesting portrayal of possession. It feels like they are still in there, fully aware of the world, trying to hold on to their sanity and at least trying to fight against the entity controlling them. Prince Of Darkness is not a perfect movie by any means, but it has some cool ideas and a great soundtrack. I saw it a little bit too early on in my life and got plenty of nightmares back then, so it also has a lot of nostalgic value for me.

I liked the review. I think this movie has stood the test of time, and by todays standards will be better with a re-watch. I would probably have rated this a 4/5 when I first saw it, but today it's probably a 5/5. They just don't make em like they used to.

@@JB-1138 I would say a degradation of quality over time. Most movies in the last fifteen years don't know how to build tension and directors don't know the basics. Simplicity is best and if you watch this in 4K you will be impressed with the image quality to give it something "new". Well worth it. I'll also be watching The Thing for the 6000th time in 4K sometime as well now they released it.

Radio carbon dating only works up to about 50,000 years ago due to the half-life of Carbon 14 (The radioactive carbon that is datable and contained within all living matter). Before that you must use an alternative dating method. Oh and might I mention, you can't carbon date corrosion it needs to be the aforementioned organic matter to carbon date. Otherwise, fantastic movie imho.

This for me Carpenter's best movie. It gripped me from the start. The ideas posed in the beginning with physics and philosophy. And the movies builds up just like the shinning to a slow crescendo until the end where pace goes up to a manic pace. Loved it. Soundtrack is the best.

I love that jump-scare at the end. I do it myself every morning just to keep everyone in the household on their toes. You didn't mention though the main Crux of the movie, which is that the other universe is the antimatter universe. This is a very efficient way of combining science with religion; the other dimension where Heaven and Hell is supposed to be is equated with antimatter which, it is surmised, constitutes a separate inimical universe. And of course, when matter comes into contact with antimatter, they both destroy each other, resulting in the Apocalypse.

  • @JB-1138
    @JB-1138 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'd like to think all the classic John Carpenter movies exist in the same cinematic universe.
Hypothetically this is happening at the same time as Assault on Precinct 13, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, In the Mouth of Madness, etc.
I know the years don't exactly match up for that to happen, but it works in my head.

This movie gave me nightmares when i first saw it as a kid in the 80's.
The dream sequence kept replaying in my mind as i lay awake at night in the darkness, i didn't get much sleep for a week or so after watching this, and mirrors didn't do me any favours either.
The movie's concept of Scientific Theory merging with Religeous Scripture to explain something otherworldly captured my imagination and i bought into the horror manipulating and corrupting people, that scared me immensely.
I love The Prince of Darkness, it's often overlooked among John Carpenter's great list of movies, but it's certainly one i go back to every so often for my thinking man's movie demonic apoccalyptic fix.
    Cheers guys.

I saw the movie in the theater on initial release, not my favorite at the time. I love "The Thing", and especially "In the Mouth of Madness". I've re-watched "Prince of Darkness" since and I think it's pretty good now. Honestly, I think the problem was always with Jameson Parker, I had watched a ton of "Simon & Simon" (an old show he was on with Gerald McRaney). I always saw him as A.J. with a mustache.

My opinion about the ending. [spoiler] In the end Brian continue to have that dream/message, so they haven't save nothing, the world will be destroyed anyway…and in the last “dream” the savior/antichrist (we don’t kwon) is the girl (Catherine). It was always about her, nothing should came out from the mirror, but it was about something that should go inside! To me it was something that had to come, there is not a battle “good against evil” (and this is even more terrifying). This made me think about what we know of life and reality.. and the beautiful last scene give us no answer.

By 2022 standards men aren't remotely allowed to approach a woman, she pretty much has to come to you and if you know anything about hetero women, they only do that with 9/10+ Roman Chads, so i disagree there. Most women, like to be gracefully, suavely chased IF they like that person.
