- Its time to start fresh, today is season 3 episode 1 of the fan showdown. We have 4 new fans and a brand new air cooler to cool. This season we will be using the brand new Noctua NH-P1 passive air cooler. We wont be using it passively, we will be attaching your fan designs to it and see just how far we can push it. The first thing we are going to try and do is throw a turbo on it.

The only flaw with that cooler is that it doesn't really test static pressure of the fans as much as a cooler with a denser fin stack.
As to how much that will affect the fans thermal performance, I don't know.
Either way, I can't wait to see this season play out!!!

@@The_Ballo It does change the standards a bit, but its still going against the noctua's specs. I'd say the goalposts were redesigned, rather than moved. I do agree that static pressure measuring is not going to be a thing BUT it does open up the option of static pressure vs non static pressure categories.
@@The_Ballo I agree, but I think running a few of the past fans (not just the winners) for comparison to the old set up would help us get an idea of the differences.
@@puretriggers6533 Just compare the A12 for now. They did almost the exact same within 1 degree; so that's usually considered to be margin of error. Thus the same, pretty much.

old setup vs new setup is basically 1 degree difference.
Though it could be seen as maybe almost 2 degrees since the base room temp was lower for the new one? I dunno. Either or, that difference is also a single degree. So between final temps and base temps... functionally the same with some possible variance.
@@InfamousSabreMods no, the turbo came last because it's designed to be in a housing and sending the pressurized air perpendicular to the fan (basically sideways) instead of a normal pc fan blowing straight through, you can see that the base of the turbo fan is very wide which doesnt really help its flow in this situation

Trashing his competitors
The top 3 should always be carried over to the next season. You kinda want to end up with the best and not just seasonal trends.
Actually, I think that's kinda his point; he *wants* to discard prior winners because it becomes difficult to get onto the leader board (literally a leader... board). I'm not claiming that he's right or wrong; just that he chooses to discard former leaders to make room for new contenders. The showdown isn't simply about finding the most effective fan in existence.
I too prefer giving new fans a chance instead of including the old fans
We need to make a best of the best. And a retest of all fans for milestone subscribers 🙂

most computers still just use directly mounted CPU heatsinks, after all.

The new cooler makes this an "airflow at any cost" season, and that's exciting! However, I think that most previously submitted fans are made to atleast have a bit of pressure, so this wasn't really fair to them. Next time consider making an announcement for the types of fan before starting a new season, and build some hype around it too!

I always advocate for keeping things simple and uncomplicated... but I'd love to see the leaderboard split between the crazy inventive awesome sticky-outy fans, and fans that will be practical while fitting onto the hub, like something that could reasonably work in a normal computer.
Also, I don't mean to be _that guy,_ but shouldn't Johann be pronounced "yo-hahn"?
I designed a super high pressure oriented fan that fits in the cage well back in season 1 and im still waiting to see it. I'd love to see how it compares to other designs.

I think it'd be more fair to put fans into two classes: airflow and static pressure. I've watched the show from the start, and I saw an assortment of both classes. Airflow fans won't do well in cooling, but they do move a lot of air, while static pressure fans cool well, but they can't funnel the air as well as the former. Idea for season 3.
Looks like whats an important part is the exhaust flow. you can see in the turbo fan that the exhaust is vented around the sides - out the edges. The best performer would channel air straight out into the radiator fins.
@@fredfinks yeah, but it's designed to push air into the radiator instead. The funnel will need a redesign to work as an exhaust fan. Separating fans into two classes might actually increase the diversity in some of them, actually: they'll need to make fans to serve a specific purpose instead of just pushing air through a radiator 🤔
Also, the Noctua P1 isn't really designed to be used with a fan. it's been designed to be used passively, adding the fan is just an extra. I'm a little bit confused about the choice of cooler when doing comparisons between fan performances.
I think comparing fans on air-coolers with proper fin density vs radiators makes sense, but not on a passive cooler.
Noctua themselves also state this, and gave this cooler a performance rating that is lower than for example, the U12A.
High Airflow fans do cool very well as lo g as there isnt too much restriction. Thats basically the server cooling model. Balls to the wall airflow.
They should do a "Fan Throwdown" where they do a tournament where all of season 1-3's top 5 competitors can get a chance to make a new fan in under a week or use their already pre-built fans. The winner could get a big prize maybe or something? Maybe a gaming PC rig with their fans being used could be cool?

Fan Throwdown: now they have to function as battle tops and go into the ring and whack each others blades off in the heat of combat.

Basically what Johann's fan was about: Made by an engineering student and designed as a three piece design with stator veins and an upper ring fairing to improve aerodynamics. Has done this in hopes of improving rotational speed and better capturing the rotational energy.

I love fan showdown. The simplest designs always seem to win. No matter how good of an engineer you are, and how much time and effort you pour into your design, the most basic designs always seem to top the leaderboard, and I love the thought of that. Can't wait for the rest of this season!
The engineering student was the one who designed the turbo-while I did start studying mech engineering too, a long time ago, my life took me in a different direction and I‘ve been in software engineering for a good 10 years now.
The SRS design was not based on any calculations or anything, I just spent a couple hours in fusion drawing up something that tied together a few ideas of mine I had during the last couple of episodes, just to relax my mind a bit after coding. 😉

I'm amazed, I could tell by the vortex the trashcan was putting off in the smoke test that, somehow, it was pulling some IMPRESSIVE air, I didn't realize it'd be in FIRST. I mean, of course the AAA fan with probably thousands of dollars worth of research and hundreds of thousands of hours of testing would come above someone's first time.
But what's MORE impressive is the fans the Trashcan went up against, all seemed like pretty sound rivals, an iteration on a previous outer rim fan, a use of a car's funnel designed for specific airflow, and a fan using scientific know-how to try and increase airflow a solid margin, all of these on first sight could've easily seen winning any other episode and gone "Well, that's not surprising", but the Trashcan won!
Bravo Aiden, regardless if it was luck or sound reasoning, you've done an impressive job!
Would have been nice to have the top 5 be brought back into season 3 to see how they compare

Very simple: you simply just re-test all the fans with the new cooler.
The issue is that the top fans might never be outdone, this is why he breaks them up, otherwise many might feel they have no chance
@@WillBilly. yeah but where's the excitement in that? much more exciting to see people try and beat a record and there's a few records to be set:
- "the best looking fan" (host as jury)
- the least noise
- the best cooling
- the coolest aerodynamics (smoke test)
- the biggest meme fan

Who else is jammin out to the smoke test music? I assume everyone cause its a staple of the channel now. Awesome content!
Cooling at what cost though? Why not take amperage readings for what each fan draws and calculate that in next to the delta?
Honestly i wouldn't switch the cooler to something so obscure. Right now your testing is at least mostly relatable. People can look at your numbers and know generally how it would preform on their rig. the passive heatsink is really obscure, uses thicker thin stack with less fins which will both not see as much benefit from any given fan as a normal fin stack, as well as will be biased towards high airflow rather than high pressure fans. The resulting chart will be absolutely useless for 99.9% of all people outside of a basic comparison between fans.
Plus it's performance / cost over much more effecient designs is quite a bit higher...
The last time I checked the pricing on that Fanless cooler it was $115 . . . and the spacing of the heat plates make using a fan on it, way less effecient...
I could guess you could do better with a no name cooler that is bare bones at best costing considerbally less for the same performance...( provided it has a fan)

All the previous fans from the people that seriously though about there designs are now fucked.
They all designed high pressure fans and are now thrown in to a competition about flowrate...

I love the turbo design! I think that a shroud behind it to go into the noctua housing would help it's cooling ability. That way it would direct more of it's air through the cooler rather than out to the sides. Great video!
As I saw the smoketest i got the same idea. I will redesign it with a new part, what redirects te air into the cooler.

for some reason, the turbo charger looks like it will work better on a small AIO radiator.
Convection based CPU coolers work different to how traditional CPU coolers do, even if you install a massive server fan stack to that cooler, you wont see as much difference, cause the heat transfer doesn't deppend nearly as much on airflow but on the conductivity and radiation of the fin stack itself
This is wrong. Radiation is a very small portion of the total heat transfer at low temperatures. You need large temperature delta’s to make radiation significant. And without air flow, the surrounding air will heat up to match the temperature of the fins which reduces heat transfer to practically nothing. You’re counting on passive diffusion of the hot air around it, which is why this passive cooler has a ~100W restriction. You need air movement to keep fresh cool air over the fins once you get past the limits of natural convection.

Whee, happy mine made it into the lineup this time (the SRS). It might not have done as well as I‘d have hoped (I thought the rotor would spin faster at its smaller size), but it just brings me joy to see it in reality and in this test.

You always say you didn't anticipate how popular The Fan Showdown would be but its because of people like me who discovered your channel because of it. I don't know a whole lot about PCs but I know lower temperature means better. Watching 4 fans duke it out while trying to predict a winner is better than most of TH-cam.

Te best part about fan showdown for me is that i learned hot to guess quite well how fans will place relative to each other based on how close is smoke exhaust side to laminar flow.
