Massive Elephant vs 3 Baby Hippos

  • Elephants can be grumpy at the best of times and these hippos soon learned that this Ellie was not interested in visitors on his turf…
This footage was taken by Evan Malsbury in the Umfolozi River in South Africa.
Evan told Latestsightings.com: “We were part of an organized tour group that had arranged for a river cruise. There were several other boats on the river, nothing too unusual prior to this sighting, just many hippo groups grazing along the river.
According to the boat driver and the tour director, seeing elephants along the river as part of this cruise was extremely unusual, so everyone on board was jockeying for a better view. This was then that we saw an elephant close to the water’s edge. The elephant was alone for a while before the trio of hippos appeared and this was when the drama was taken up a notch. The hungry the hippos were no match for the elephant but thankfully no one but the tree was hurt.
Apparently, this was rare even for the tour director/cruise driver, it was the most unusual thing seen during our 14 day trip to South Africa. The tour director proposed that the hippos were younger and that they were learning about how to interact with elephants, and that the elephants were just trying to cross the river. It all seemed like a territorial standoff to me though.”

The elephant may have been a bit scared of the hippos itself. It may not have seen hippos on land before, so was not sure if they presented a danger or not. Elephants can be very skittish about strange things, hence the common idea of them being afraid of mice. When I was doing elephant rides at a zoo one time a trio of guinea fowl were threatening the ride elephant, which had children on her back. I think the fowl had their nest near by. They got to about ten feet from the elephant and wouldn't stop squawking and rustling their feathers. The elephant was balking and starting to turn away from her path, so I had to chase the fowl off or the kids on the elephant's back could have been in danger of falling off or being on a runaway elephant. Once an elephant starts running away she's pretty hard to stop.

Great video...thanks for sharing! The baby hippos were clearly oblivious to the massive elephant's grumpy demeanor. That is, until he knocked a tree over and they high-tailed it back to the water. An elephant of his size could've just stomped on them, but he didn't.

  • @chargingrhino5636

I think it speaks volumes to the elephant's intelligence that it chose to make a really loud noise, rather than trumpet (and possibly alert other hippos) or charge them (and risk an injury). Moreover, the fact that it used the noise from snapping a tree in half to scare the hippos away tells you a lot about his self-awareness. I think breaking the tree virtually qualifies as tool use. It certainly demonstrates complex thinking and problem solving. Pretty amazing video!!!

My 2 cents he scares them eventually knowing the other elephant coming could not be as friendly as him. Pretty sure he actually protected the babies by scaring them.
