Fishing Mornington Peninsula for Australian Salmon

www.howtofish.com.au I was down at Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and the weather was horrible. It was cold, wet and windy.
In these conditions the predators sometimes come in to shore and hunt the small bait fish washed around in the rough water. I decided that I would brave the cold and attempt to hook an Australian salmon. I was hoping there were some big fish about in these conditions.
I rigged up with heavy gear and large hooks. I had a whole pilchard as bait on one rod and Spicy Chicken on the other rod. To my surprise the fish were biting but only small ones.
I caught a number of small salmon and Tommy Ruff before finally hooking into a big fish. It leaped out of the water, shook its head and moved very fast.
Unfortunately I only had it on the hook for about ten seconds before it managed to get free. I was absolutely gutted at losing that fish.
After this I decided to leave.
On the way home I met a couple of fishermen who had done very well during the night. They had stayed out in the cold and wet and hooked a number of big Australian Salmon. These were beautiful big fish caught with a paternoster rig set up with a whole pilchard.
While I was talking to them one of the guys hooked a Port Jackson shark, which is another predator that had come in close to shore to prey on the bait fish.

Do small salmon have a different name , in the same way that small snapper are called pinkies ?

Small salmon (juvenile salmon) also known as salmon trout. People often mistaken it as tommy ruff.
