    I stumbled across these videos by accident and have to say what a great series. I can honestly say I have learned more in these seventy minutes than I have in months of wading through theory books! Thank you, thank you.

    This channel explains music to me better than any resource I've stumbled upon on the internet. Everything is impossibly easy to absorb. The low views on these videos are criminal compared to how many people would benefit from watching them.

    Thank you for this. The format of this whole series is perfect. A little theory, a little visualization, perfect and plenty examples, all the while not losing sight of the big picture which is what we are all here for.

    Research has shown drummers tend to go from light to hard swing as tempo of a song increases. I like the 5:3 swing, it's in between light and medium swing and it syncs well with eights.

    I find playing with guys that are good at swing to be the most exhilarating part about playing music.The question is, how much should you vary swing from phrase to phrase, if at all. And still stay coherent. Because it can get predictable like anything else. An unexpected change in swing really makes you hold onto your hat and move your feet!

  • @krnflks
    @krnflks 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always liked to think of basic swing as being almost polyrhythmic. If you take a hat pattern that's playing a straight 16th note triplet pattern and remove the hits between the first and third hit, you'll get a swing pattern. If you take a straight 13th note pattern and take out all the hits but the first and last, you'll get that "drunk" feel shuffle pattern. Doing this with any straight pattern will yield a different swing feel.

    sorry for asking this but what is the difference between swing and just notating the different rhythms like you would in classical music?

    • @UncleEti
      @UncleEti 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most of the time, swing is not notated specially ; you have a standard writing but but with "swing" written at the beginning of the score. It''s a lot about being slightly before or after the beat.

    • @ToddAlanSloane
      @ToddAlanSloane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In terms of notation, swing is usually written as triplets with the first and third of every three played and the second one rested. It can also be notated as straight eighth notes with the comment “swing” to denote that every pair of eighths is really the first and third notes of a triplet. But the real key to swing, which is part of the American Jazz tradition, is the interpretation of the pairs. Generally, but with some notable exceptions, as tempo slows swing leans more toward the first and four notes of sixteenths and at up tempos they tend toward straight eighth notes. This subtlety is one of the signatures of masterful jazz musicianship in comparison to jazz that may be technically accurate but does not embody this feel. “Swinging” is when the entire band is locked in this feel even if it’s not “evenly” subdivided. I hope this is helpful.
