Play With Your Music Theory: Meet The Black Keys

  • The black keys of the piano produce two super useful scales, the major and minor pentatonics. These scales appear in just about every world culture and are incredibly ancient. They're nice for beginners because they contain no dissonant intervals, so it's impossible to play anything that sounds bad. By adding a note to the minor pentatonic scale, you get the blues scale, which is one of the cornerstones of blues, rock, jazz, country, R&B and much else.

Another great lesson! Due to being hard-of-hearing from birth, hence this video was a bit more challenging to follow because CC (Closed Caption) is not enabled for this video. But managed by having to repeat sections several times over where necessary.

Was wondering why pentatonic scales are used so much in music. Now I know. Thanks!

I play the C major scale on guitar to learn the note letters (white). As you say the pentatonic is easy on guitar but I just thought I should now play and say(in head) the names of the D sharp/E flat pentatonic minor to remember (cement) the sharp and flat notes up the neck! Something the keyboard player need not worry about as the notes glare at you.

I never realized this "black key" relationship relative to the pentatonic scales. Thanks for teaching me something today!

I fear people watching this might come away with the impression that pentatonic scales are scales you play with the black keys on the piano.

Minor pentatonic + the blue note came from 'cross harp' where you primarily draw the air in instead of blowing a standard major chord, I believe (since I can't prove it). The 'blue note' would be the one 'bent' downward in pitch by rolling the harmonica into your bottom lip reducing the the size of the opening and producing the effect. I would think this would be the one to start with since most folks would be interested in the most popular riff in history, I believe (as you illustrated with the flute). Are you related to Wulf? Maybe you could get him to play a little to show how it sounds. My uncle used to improvise all over the black keys with this scale and progressions. You could transpose up a half-step to show the E minor pentatonic scale and jam with your guitar playing friend. Leave the major pentatonic for a lesson on jazz...
