    These videos are gold for anyone learning to program beats. Ethan is the Man! Thanks for the lessons. They are extremely well developed, easy to understand, and practical. You'll be programming classic beats in an hour of free video.

    Awesome videos! Thank you so much for sharing these online, your use of visual aids is so helpful. I never thought of rhythm as a spiral before but seeing that one picture makes so much sense. You have a great way of teaching sound visually.

    you're such a good educator! love your chilled vibe. also good speed, not too slow, not too fast. some other, more "professional" youtube channels are way too fast, do not make any breaks between sentences, hastily. this on the other hand feels natural to me. thanks a lot!

    Time unit box system! I am really into 3/4 time, Waltzes and polkas and am a big fan of Beirut, DeVotchka and if it has 3/4 time I usually gravitate toward it. How does that fit into the time unit box system?

    • @vecvan
      @vecvan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      simply paint the bold painted divider after three boxes as it marks the down beat, or ignore the divider or ... think outside the box, put the check marks wherever ;)

      Basically you are correct, but you seem to have missed how he is counting: As he explains in the video he is counting in half-time to make the 16th notes easier to count. So his first '3' is the '2' in traditional counting and the next '3' is the '4' in traditional counting.
      I hope this helps you. Let meknowif you have more questions. 🙂

  • @obliviousdude9437

    Ethan is a great teacher and these videos are wonderful, but did he just suggest clapping on the 3 for blues and rock? Just no, dude. Also, he calls beat 3 the backbeat, but I've always heard beats 2 and 4 labeled as the backbeats (and where you clap).

    • @ravensmitten5107
      @ravensmitten5107 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stopped the video at that minute to say aw hell no you didn't, but then had to check myself for a second as he was counting in half time. The 2 & 4 become the 3 & 7

      @AfiScruggsplaysbass ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ravensmitten5107 & @obliviousdude9437 Yeah, I see his explanation. But I think it's too academic and confusing. I've played gospel in Black churches for 50+ years. We do not clap on the down beat. We clap on the upbeats, (ee and uh if we're talking about 16th notes.)

    • @ravensmitten5107
      @ravensmitten5107 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AfiScruggsplaysbass For sure, like I say It was on in the background and was confused by the explanation so much I stopped the video and went to make a comment. I thought he was then gonna clap on the downbeats then realised it was cut time - so yes he is but isn't. Like you say it's def more confusing than it needs to be.
