    I had an automotive "painter" do an absolute abhorrent job on my vw t3 syncro, hid his bad job with pain. totally wrecked me after spending my hard earned money to get my van worse then when I gave it to him. You and others on youtube have empowered me to give it a go myself. Thank you.

    Mate you have a great skill and also talk in a way that helps less experienced but doesn't tell the more experienced how to suck eggs either , really enjoying vids , I've been a painter and powdercoater for 30 odd years , painted Everthing from cars , commercial trucks in early years to components , wheels , signs , kitchens , furniture of late , started out in cars as an apprentice as I say but for 25 odd years an industrial painter and feel I've missed the boat to get back into cars , but still paint daily as a job and find escape in your vids and maybe one day will do another car for myself or find a job helping out in a bodyshop with guys like you , keep up the great content

    I think your overshooting a daily driver paint job. That sucker will be pretty cherry. beautiful display of using epoxy primer as a wet bed for high build. FYI there are some high builds that have great sealing and DTM capabilities. But for a lot of them this is a great way to get the best adhesion to bare metal and great seal so your body work will not show shrinkage and mapping.

    Hey Tony, I was surprised at the numbers watching and on the live chat last night and really enjoyed the banter on the channel, it was good to see Chris (Pharraway) on the channel as well as he did say earlier that he would try and pop in . The old mini is looking very nice so far mate from what it was at first all the panels are looking very flat.
    As always your attention to detail is spot on with nothing missed and no corners cut, have to say though that roof is going to keep you busy as it looks like it's been on it's roof in the past 🤭

    Hi Tony, love your vids. Will try to learn painting just watching your work. Question. I don´t have an oven. Will be using a large tent with a couple of fans. How to determine when to apply the high build on the epoxy? Is there a way to "test" when to shoot, like should the epoxy be slightly sticky? I will be using Mipa for the whole project.

    The reason for applying epoxy primer before polyester was to isolate dubious substrates, right? With plain bare-metal we can apply polyester paste and sprayable polyester directly over metal? After sanding that, only one thin layer of epoxy primer would be required, right? I am asking since epoxy is expensive and takes a long time to properly cure.

      No polyester high build cannot go direct to metal it would need an etch primer first , if you want to cut cost use epoxy on the bare shell first then high build after and skip the middle coat of epoxy I used , the new automotive epoxys don’t take a long time to cure and can be as cheap as high builds if you look in the right place and use them properly

      @@TonysRefinishingTV Both Spies-Hecker Raderal and Upol Reface mention direct-to-metal (specially steel compatibility) and Reface explicitly mentions incompatibility with etch-primer. I am sure you're right, nothing beats experience.

      I thought you meant polyester based as in high build not there spray poly mate sorry

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s spray polyester filler rather than high build which is a different material and can be used direct I would still use an epoxy on the metal first if it was me

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      so the first layer i did was epoxy again just a thin light coat to seal it all up again and then i did high build primer after that mate

      @@TonysRefinishingTV so you don’t use etch primer to cover the bare metal but epoxy??? Sorry for sounding so thick 😋

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it’s all valid man question wise , you can use etch but it has pretty much zero resistance to moisture and water if the etch got wet it would soak up the water and rust the metal epoxy however will not abs hives a much better stronger seal on bare metal by miles

    question about getting a car painted. i am thinking of getting my merc 190 blasted to get it repainted in silver. the underneath needs a good blasting as there is a lot of surface rust. if i was to blast the car fully what should i spray the car over to keep the bare metal from getting worse? i was told by a friend that the body shops may not want to touch my car once it's been blasted. am i wasting my time blasting the car fully?

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends mate one on your blaster guy and how carefull he is and two what kind of shop you go to for the paint job blasting is fine if there carefull and you should use a good 2k epoxy after to seal the bare metal ASAP like within a day or it’ll start to rust again instantly

    • @coldwarmachine
      @coldwarmachine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TonysRefinishingTV yeah 2k epoxy but can I use the seam sealer over that? Then paint my underbody cover like raptor or what ever good brand is out there

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes 100% buddy epoxy will give the metal the best seal and start , then seam seal up as needed and a light scuff before raptor will give it the best possible outcome on the underside tbh
