- In a foodie city like SF, it's surprisingly hard to find a decent slice of "San Francisco style pizza" -- whatever that is. Fellow San Francisco TH-camr Tom Dehnel joins me this episode to help figure out the San Francisco Pizza scene.
Golden Boy is my go to when I'm in San Francisco. Thanks for showing me some new places to check out.
Another very popular (rightly so) pizza joint! Thanks for pitching in the recommendation for the community. 👍
I’m so excited to try Square Pie Guys! My favorite pizza in the world is Prince Street Pizza in New York, closely followed by Lions & Tigers & Squares in New York. Both are also Detroit style pizza.
If you ever travel to the South Bay, I highly recommend A Slice of New York. Their pizza is incredible. I’ve tried so many different flavors of their slices and all have been delicious.
Awesome!
Loved this video. Such a variety of pizza’s. The first one at Square Guys looks sooo good. But I have to say the Indian one looked super interesting as well 🤩🤩🤩. We just came back from NYC and had NYC slices twice. Sooooo good. Simple but yummy
They were all delicious and I'll have to take you next time you are back! BTW, Girl Scout cookie season just kicked off so I need to send out a care package soon.
Zeene InRealLife oh that would be awesome 😊😊😊😊😊
A fun list I will have to keep in mind on my next visit from Sacramento!
Thank you for the pizza tour and for all the background stories. Just when I was wondering whether you will cover Little Italy, you found a place there that won a competition in Italy itself.
This was a great watch . I bet the places are still open doing take out during this lock down time. I enjoy the Slice House and got to go last March. The Margherita Pizza is amazing. I'n a crust fan for crispiness and crunch.
Me too! Crust is the best and I always save that for last...
Delfina, flour + water, and Pizzahacker are all good examples of SF style. They are Cal-Italian, neo-Neapolitan with high quality, interesting seasonal toppings that define California cuisine. Pizzahacker just a few blocks down from Zante’s in Bernal, also has a sourdough crust with smoked sea salt on the cornicione. I would say that is very unique, creative and represents SF well.
Excellent choices! The first two are very popular and I haven't heard of the third one but will put it on my list to try. Tom and I talked a bit about the sourdough crust being possibly representative of SF but I ended up cutting it from the final :) Funny enough I started noticing international pizza places (like in Asia & the Middle East) actually do represent that as SF style!
Zeene InRealLife , you should definitely give Pizzahacker a try once we make it out of this pandemic. It really could be the archetypal SF pizza. 👍🏼👍🏼
Great job! It’s not that obvious to know where the best pizza is in SF. Good to see there are so many great places. We need more places doing red and white clam pies especially New Haven style.
Pizza in California has gotten a million times better from when I first moved here in 1978. Now if I could just find a good bagel in California.
Haha! I feel u.
If you find one, please share. I’m still looking as well.
Good bagels in California are similar to a snowman in Hawaii
😃😳
Try Western Bagel Company on Sepulveda Blvd. in the San Fernando Valley. You will not be disappointed.
I would totally recommend pairing Tom's pizza video with this one; he also covers Square Pie Guys, Gioia, and Tony's (he covers the signature Neopolitan and I cover the California style) but also throws in popular parlors like Little Star, Pizza Delfina, and Flour & Water. We're definitely missing some other really great shops out there but weren't ready to commit to a two hour video :) So, SF locals, share your favorites in the comments!
Your recommendation to pair viewing of Tom's video is equally informative and entertaining and a good one.
Thank u!
Gialina in Glen Park is a must try, just a short walk from the Bart Station.
@@ZeeneInRealLife thrilled to be candidly supportive of your efforts. Look fwd to new suggestions on places to eat. Btw, I saw your Maui video where your 2 charges were your Jr reviewers, cute! Btw, for next you get to the islands I'd like to suggest tasting Saimin (very local), malasadas (portuguese fried donuts), and both locally made char siu bao (steamed and not cocktail size but double fist sized) and the overall taste diff of Cantonese chinese food (especially chow fun).
I love Glen Park! It’s such a cute neighborhood. Haven’t tried Gialina but will put it on my list. Thanks!
Tried a few of tonys pies but the New York cheese in my fav.
I've always felt that San Francisco has something just as unique as Chicago Deep dish or New York style. It's multi fusion.
For sure! Hope you are well :)
Zeene InRealLife I'll be back March 13th to the 22nd and try to visit the new spots you featured. I have comic book appearances March 14th at the Cartoon Art Museum and the Chinese Historical Society of America March 21st. Would be an honor to meet you!
changartguy99 I would love to come and bring my kids who are huge comic fans! Please contact me at zeeneirl@gmail.com and let’s figure out how to meet up :) I’m also planning a community meet up for March with a Chinatown tour if u r available.
I brought my team to Tony's to celebrate a couple of work milestones. My team loved the pizzas there, though it's just okay to me. I guess it comes down to preferences. I don't like cracker-like pizzas or having my cheese or toppings burned.
There are definitely lots of different pizza types to go around for everyone's individual tastes! I like something a bit in-between. Thin crust but still bready.
Yeah. It's not like Tony's has infinity different options or anything and their grandma slice isn't even what put them on the map. They LITERALLY display the different types behind glass and they come out with these really cool things called menus.
I proscribed because you you shared vegetarian foods as well as Indian foods and you mix them up and even Chinese foods or Italian foods you make sure you also added some vegetarian or vegan dishes which made me want to prescribed to you cuz I am vegetarian or vegan I love the way you tell us about all the foods that you can get and buy in San Francisco
I was always partial to North Beach and Amici's.
Yumm! My favorite salad dressing of all time is Amici's Cesar that is chock full of anchovies! Definitely need a breath mint after eating it tho. 😂
Oh yummy san fransieco pizza very delicious...on the toping onion and cheese and kind of many fruits very gorgeous...seems to be you are princess of Chinese... which like pizza and sandwiches kind of two also san fransieco pizza more goodway...that is my personal thing maybe good tasty san fransieco pizza if i going to san fransieco... i experience pizza see you next time my teacher...
Tony`s is San Francisco Pizza! They make it how you like it!
Sad to see Patxi’s and/or Little Star didn’t make the list. Thanks for another great video!
Both excellent Chicago deep dish options! 👍 I originally had Little Star on my list but due to how long the video was getting, had to make a hard choice to cut something.
Zeene InRealLife I figured that was the case. Maybe a part 2?! Planning on checking out the one on mission by the federal building. It’s right behind my farmer’s market!
Still have to come visit u over a weekend!
Zeene InRealLife I’m only there on Wednesday mornings actually. But the market is open on Fridays and Sundays!
What IS San Francisco Style Pizza?
Blondie's near Union Square. That was where EVERYONE went! LOL!
I totally remember Blondie's (you mean the chain right?).
Is there an Americana in SF?
Zeene are u also leaving SF for Austin/Miami?
It does seem like there's a heavy tipping motion towards that part of the country! No, I'm staying here :)
No Georgio's in the Richmond district?
I agree, there's no credible conversation of SF's serious pizza appreciation without Giorgio's inclusion. The results will be diluted and inconclusive, tho this kind of aggregation is not new and while not a waste of time, it only serves the YT Channel host and not the public.
These lists are always controversial as there are usually more places than I can cover in one video :) So for New York style (I didn't want to cover two) I went with Tom's choice as he had done the research - and he's from New York 😂. I agree Giorgio's is definitely up there and perhaps I need to do a second video to round it out! But do try Gioia's - for me it was the best of the 4 in this grouping.
@@ZeeneInRealLife I get your reasoning, and tho I've been to and liked the one in Berkeley, it still seems like the newer joint gets the consideration. That said, it's your channel and your criteria should fit the agenda. The tasty and worthy dim sum places was a good reminder of random not being a factor in choices, and why would it each place had plenty things to be considered before one would decide where and how to spend the dim sum dollar. And again it's all reasonable. I do like that other people get pulled in to your videos, sometimes seemingly unscripted prior. The difference makes it worthy of the option to view.
@@ZeeneInRealLife Intrigued by Tom's inclusion as a pizza enthusiast, at least plenty to have organized his outing, I viewed his video understanding why you'd relied on his choice for NYC styled pizza. One thing to be clear, it has been said that the NYC water contributes to the mystical, can't quite put my finger on it attribute that makes it so special, would that qualify as NYC umami? Square Pie Guys sounds like a good reason to get some, thanks for that. Gioia in Hayes Valley becomes another consideration, having tried and enjoyed the Berkeley locations offerings.
Hi Dee! Tom isn't a pizza expert (hopefully I didn't state that in the video?) -- he's included in the video as a NY pizza fan who just completed a pretty thorough and recent survey of the SF pizza scene. Although I do believe he had a pizza expert in the group that helped him put together the video. It was a way for two people (me & Tom) studying pizza culture here to get together and share our notes/thoughts with others. Hope that helps!
as a Sicilian, ill give it a try..
Actually I'm very curious what an Italian thinks about our American pizzas! 😉
@@ZeeneInRealLife Ive been a GM of a few pizza places, some local and chains. I can sling some good pies if need be. CPK is completely So Cal, Deep dish is a casserole, St Louis is an abomination. The best pizzas are the ones that are Neopolitan, cooked in wood oven. When I used to be a pizza cook, neh, a "pizzaiolo", i would have my oven cranked to about 800'. I would spend ten hours sweating with that oven in front of me, and loving it.. the kids these days have no clue. its all about atmosphere and coolness factors, yet the factor that is the most is the artistry of the pizza. Tonys is running on rep for the last few years, the square pie guys was a pop up till they got their brick and mortar shop. Their offerings look great, I would prob get a piece, but to call that pizza, ya, thats a no for me.. The Indian pizza, thats just toppings on bread, might as well call that Indian Bruchetta.
😂😂😂 Love your response...brutally honest! Awesome that you’ve worked for so many pizzerias. Are there any around here you’d recommend for a true Italian experience?
I Love Toms Channel but he's gone silent here for the last couple months. Maybe due to Corona?
jaymeez Hey there! I’m sure he’s busy with his new consulting gig. He mentioned right after we shot this that he had several new projects, which is great for him!
The only one I liked was the the square Detroit style. Otherwise it’s all flat bread with garnishes. Not pizza.
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, the flatbread style is in vogue now so much more of that around.
This is why I love being from the bay area, you will mostly see everyone no matter your race be friends, and no one ever thinks of it.
Pizza in san francisco is pretty underwhelming like most of food in the city highly overrated
