    i bought an 86 somerset in '07 with 72,231 miles on it for $300.00 . its got the 2.5 with an auto and it gets 26-28 mpg. never had any problems with the digital dash, some rust on the bottom of the doors and around the rear wheel wells. its now got 114,743 on the odo and it runs and drives every day. replaced radiator and heater core. most expensive things yet. i pushed a car home 8 miles rater than waiting for AAA. what a die hard gm clunker but it RUNS and runs and runs.

    Agreed! They were fun to watch, they highlighted features of the cars and told you something about them, and actually reminded people a car can and should be far more than merely a transportation appliance.

    I totally agree. The Somerset is really stylish. If only Buick made it nowadays...

    The TV spot was created and produced by McCANN-ERICKSON for Buick Motor Division, when they were located on the 25th & 24th floor of the Top of Troy Building.

    My mother's first car, she had the all black T-Type one. We use to call it the Mini National. Car was alright. Tops out at 85mph only bummer. Everything worked except the tape deck, which was a necessity in the 90's.

    Those were the days. My best friend's mom let us have the Buick for Prom. We felt like superstars! That digital dash was amazing. A while later the computer went out. It was $400 to fix which in 1989 money was like $4,000 today.

    Not sure about the actors but the car is a 1986 Buick Somerset T-type. Was the first car I bought but mine was metallic red/grey. Loved the VFD digital dashboard and was a nice looking car. This is the only year the Somerset T-type was produced although later years Somerset/Skylark had a similar 'T package' offering. Typically you can easily spot the T-type as they uniquely had amber turn signals on the rear tail light assembly rather than solid red.

    There was a girl that lived down the street from me when I was younger whose mom had one of these cars. Very nice car, it was fully loaded with the red pillow seats.

    The digital dashes in these are actually really easy to repair. I think a lot of the people complaining are the types who didn't realize the cars they already had were rad and it was all downhill from y2k, now probably miserable in some podcar because they forgot how to drive.

    I remember watching this commercial on SuperStation WTBS Atlanta in September 1985, when I was only nine years old. Also, this was shown during the college football game between the Auburn Tigers and the U.L. Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns in September 1985. This was my first game as an Auburn fan ! We routed U.L.L, 49-7. Auburn was ranked number two in the country going into this game. Bo Jackson ran for 290 yards and scored 4 td's. Auburn was up 35-0 at halftime. You always remember your first time in whatever it is, whether it's your first date, first time driving a car, first job interview. Well, this was my first time as an Auburn fan, and being a native of Louisiana for thirty years, it felt good to beat the U.L.L. Ragin' Cajuns. All I can say is, " War Eagle". Navy Blue and Orange forever. The city of Auburn, Alabama is number one forever ! 🧡💙🧡💙🧡💙🧡💙 🧡💙🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅

    Well, personally, no, I wouldn't really rather have a Somerset. I remember a relative of mine wanting one back in the '80's, though. I think he was fortunate enough that he never actually ended up with one.

    Car that breaks all the rules.... yeah the rules of making a good automobile! This was my first car, and it was a piece of crap. I had to replace the steering column, drive around with boxes of fuses because they would blow out constantly. The passenger door wouldn't unlock from the outside. The windows would go off track, and the window roller handles would fall off. The electronic dash looked cool, but was hard to read under some lighting conditions. That was my Somersh*t.

    I had an 1987 Somerset limited and besides the digital dash going out and the clear coat coming off it was a good reliable car.

    Yes I really would rather have a Somerset. I had to get rid of mine and now own an '83 Riviera which dont get me wrong is better in nearly every respect except maybe the dash i find it odd and kinda ugly and also the fact that the electrical system is completely worn out so half the features dont work. But theres just something about that first car....

    My dad bought a Buick Sumerset brand new back in 1985. It was dark red and it had the 2.5 iron duke motor. He took pretty good care of it. By 1990 the car was starting to fall apart. The digital dashboard would flicker and the engine was not reliable. It only had 50000 miles on it! Since then for a daily driver, Honda is the way to go.

  • @candorguy
    @candorguy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This car I used to own--1985 Somerset 3.0 was a terrible junk! I bought it brand new and repairing it was very unfriendly and costly. GM had no idea of what quality control is all about. I had the same ignition problem GM is recalling today. You rarely see them on the road today. I wonder why? Going with a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry was a better choice.

    • @RevengeofGothzilla
      @RevengeofGothzilla 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The "ignition problem" is only a problem because some people are to stupid to notice that their car is no longer running. I owned a Buick of similar vintage used, it was a miserable little car, but it had no mechanical problems even after I jumped it off a ramp. You couldn't pay me to own another car that dull, but I think you're just a Honda fanboy.

    • @candorguy
      @candorguy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RevengeofGothzilla You're wrong about that. I've never owned a Japanese made car. Don't get me wrong, GM made some great cars; but, unfortunately the N-cars wasn't one of them. You don't want your ignition system to cut off while you're driving at 55mph. And it's a fact GM back in the 80's had no concept of what quality control was. I have an 86 El Camino; 5.0 and it drives great! And I've received plenty of complements. So put your money where you mouth is pal
