  • In this episode, we discovered some problems with the Gen4 engine swap, we also do a side-by-side comparison to the engines from Gen3 and Gen4 and of course we did 0 to 60 time to find out if Gen4 is faster.

    Can't tell you how much I appreciate the time and detail in your video! I have just decided to forgo the head gasket repair I was about to embark on in favor of a gen 4 engine swap. I'll be hunting for the engine today as well as looking for more info about your battery swap! Thank you sir!!

    You will need to ensure the EGR components, and the EGR passages, are kept clean, say every 50k miles. To avoid a repeat. The mechanics mention of sleeves in the block is not what prevents EGR clogging: 4th gen EGR is revised in many ways. And your EGR is still third gen. Which is smart, 4th gen EGR is problematic in 3rd gen vehicle. But yeah, continue to keep your EGR clean. See first link in my signature at PriusChat, for links/tips/info on how to DIY this. 😊

    At .20 sec it still shows the misplaced PCV valve close to the oil at the bottom of the engine unlike the gen 2 where the PCV valve is at the valve cover at the top of the engine like almost every car has, if you need to swap the head and the engine is still good on the Gen 3 then just replace the head gasket why go through all this, either way you'll get another 200,000 miles or more on that new head again anyways, thank you for the video and the time you spent making it

    How was the ECU reprogrammed so that the ICE doesn't start every time the car is started, so that it behaves more like 4th generation Prius than 3rd generation. Thanks.

      I'm wondering about what Toyota did to the Gen 4 to eliminate the problems with the, if it doesn't eliminate the EGR problem what is the sense to do the swap? If you still have to do the EGR cleaning I don't see any reason to swap.

    I did gen4 swap for my prius v at Golden kp around 2017 .that time engine was so cheap because no one need gen4 engine and gen 3 engine was asking around 1600. City mpg shoot up getting 46 to 48mpg .but highway mpg stay the same. The car feel like slower too.

      Wondering the same thing... Replacing my head gasket and lapping the valves now and kicking myself.... I probably should have just swapped for a Gen 4 engine after buying all the specialty tools, time expense it is taking to tear apart the engine, and clean it.

    I thought Tony said the gen 4 exhaust manifold is different, so with the swap they use a gen 3 head....isn't that the source of the problem in the first place?

    • @willyfromthehillies
      @willyfromthehillies ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No the source is with the coolant jacket passages in the block. With the heat up/cool down cycles so high in the Prius, there’s a lot of expansion contraction between head and block. The gen4 block has design changes to the cooling passages to help with less expansion/contraction

    • @technicalitems731
      @technicalitems731 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willyfromthehilliesso a head from the gen 3 with the block from a gen 4 is the ultimate reliable engine?

    • @willyfromthehillies
      @willyfromthehillies ปีที่แล้ว

      @@technicalitems731 It's way more reliable that a standard gen3 block with gen3 head. The gen2 engine is the ultimate reliable engine, hands down. The problem there is that the gen2 vehicles look like shit from a design standpoint. Honestly tho the gen3 engine isn't horrible for reliability, just nothing like the gen2. You can expect to get over 200k miles on a gen3 stock setup before the head gasket goes, assuming you keep up on the EGR service and regular maintenance. Still better reliability than most American cars.

  • @masagsxr
    @masagsxr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It doesn't look like they changed the heads over? That's why his old plastic cover couldn't go back on, because it didn't fit the gen4 head ... I'd love it if someone could clarify.

    I did the same swap but opted for a new/rebuilt gen 3 top/cams with the 4gen block so it came out looking like a gen3 and can still use the 3rd gen engine cover not sure if that was a good idea ? the mechanic gave me the option to keep it all 4th gen or modified to fit with the 3rd gen top/cams and decided for the oem 3rd gen look so basically I have a 3rd gen top with 4th gen bottom

    Jack, I enjoy your videos. I recently swapped my the engine of my 2010 Prius with a Gen4 at the same place you did your and Tony was the tech.. two days after, I got the P0A80 ODB code which Dr Prius App says it’s the batter pack. I replaced my hybrid battery a year ago with a reconditioned battery so is it possible the error code is related to the engine swap or perhaps a bad blade in the hybrid battery.

Personally I'm unaware of where this decrease comes from IE: Ecu tune, Injector size, fuel pressure or the intake redesign, but its supposed to be more efficient so the horsepower doesn't really matter.
