10 minutes spark plugs replacement - mechanics would like to keep this secret! Prius Gen3 RHD only

  • This is the simple method to change spark plugs on a Prius Gen 3 without taking out the lower cowl cover. It is how it is being done by all the mechanics but they will charge you hours for the labor. Just buy the spark plugs and DIY with just a simple affordable spark plug wrench.
    Update: this method only works for RHD Prii. For those with LHD Prius Gen 3, you will still need to remove the metal cowl as it is bigger and blocking the ignition coil from coming out.

    I’ve changed coil packs and spark plugs on the LHD Prius Gen 3, it’s not as bad as people make it out to be! With a short impact gun, I was able to dismantle the wiper assembly and metal cowl in less than 15 minutes, most local shops were charging 2 to 3 hours of labor to change spark plugs and I wasn’t having any of that.

    Bro you're a lifesaver! This makes the job so much easier, just gotta hunt for this swivel T top extension now. Had a question, I'm at 150,000 kms and up for the first major service. What are the common things to do on this car to make it run perfect? I was thinking spark plugs, EGR pipe, and maybe PCV valve (it starts burning oil at higher speeds, around 110 km/h and over). Should I touch the transmission oil or differential oil?

    • @unkertech
      @unkertech  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup, those you mentioned and EGR cooler. Transmission fluid should be changed if not done before. Don't forget to clean the HV fan too.

    What about using anti-seize for the plugs and silicone paste for ignition coil tubes?
    By the way, that's a clean engine bay! Also, I liked how you compared and measured the old and new spark plugs.
    What kind of camera and mount did you use to record the video, so you had two free hands?

    • @unkertech
      @unkertech  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Anti-seize are not necessary as plugs already have a layer or chrome/silver substance that is anti corrosive. Silicone paste or di-electric grease is good to use in the plug coil but I have not tried that before. Maybe will do it next time.

      That's the VVT solenoid. Your car should be find since you have plug it back in. You can reset the error code using OBD2 or disconnect 12v battery -ve terminal for 5 minutes. You should be good to go.

      Apart from the flexible sparkplug wrench, you actually only need a 10mm boxer/flexible wrench to remove the coil plugs. I do recommend you get a wrench box set if you are serious of DIY. The money you saved on going to mechanics once already is enough to get a decent tool set.

    • @unkertech
      @unkertech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's called spark plug wrench. The one I bought only comes in bigger sizes socket. So I had to buy a 14mm spark plug socket separately. Also, make sure to get magnetic spark plug socket. Not the rubber type. Cause the rubber can come off and get stuck on the spark plug. So when you plug back your coil, it will not sit properly.
