RATTLE SOLVED FOR ME!! I have a 2010 Toyota Prius with 212k miles. My daughter was using it in college and called me up with a sound byte of the engine rattle. My mechanic said that it had a few miles left but I should start looking to sell it cheap! -I replaced the PCV Valve using the "underneath" method, found that the #1 Cylinder coil had a burn spot on the down tube, so replaced that. -Noise was gone until the next day. Looked under the hood and noticed the coolant was real low. THOUGHT THE WORST!! -Pressure tested the Water system and it held perfectly. -Cleaned the EGR and cooler [super bad but not failed] -Small pickup tube in the intake manifold for #1 cylinder that had the failure was clogged. -Cleaned and re-assembled. NO PROBLEM My suggestion would be: 1. Pressure test the system or have a mechanic [start saving $$ for a 1200$ bill if it is worth it] IF IT HOLDS PRESSURE, 2. Replace the PCV from above and clean out the intake pickups, EGR tube, and since you have most of that stuff off pull the EGR with cooler, chemical clean. {all needs to be done and while you are there might as well} 3. If it does not go away, great. Throw some good injector cleaner in there for a few tanks and call it a done!! ---If not swap the spark plugs and look for burn marks on the down-tubes..
Additionally, you can tell if it's an EGR issue if you place something metal and flat (metal scaper) into the EGR outlet to the intake manifold. You have to undo the top bolt and loosen the bottom. You essentially blocked all flow to the intake incase of a stuck open EGR valve. but before that, I would check the oil and coolant for signs of a head gasket leak. The best way to tell is to get a borescope camera and look in the cylinders to see if it's steam-cleaned.
I had the same problem with my 2010 Prius. I replaced the EGR valve, cleaned EGR cooler, thoroughly cleaned intake manifold (all ports were fully clogged), changed spark plugs and fuel injectors. Problem solved!
It's the hybrid system (via motor/generator MG1) which is causing the rattling sound in the damper disc. The root cause is the misfiring engine (spark plug, EGR, injector etc.), this misfire is causing a fluctuation of the engine speed (every time a cylinder misfires the engine speed slows down a bit). The hybrid system measures the engine and MG1 rotor speed very accurately and wants to keep it at a chosen speed. So it will compensate the fluctuation of the speed by increasing or decreasing the torque on MG1. This very quick compensation of MG1 is causing the rattling.
Great input. Thank you. My question is: how do you KN now it’s not head gasket damage? And to add to the point, my antifreeze fluid is going low frequently.
Success hurrah update after all the attempts at diagnosing this rattling ice engine I finally fixed it?, it wasn't the intake manifold nor EGR valve nor cylinder head gasket or as I suspected a faulty Throttle Position Sensor. I am a retired mechanic with many years in industry so I may be rusty but I do know what I'm talking about and I hope this story helps others avoid getting ripped off. I had replaced the spark plugs in its service along with oil and filter, there was zero indication of a head issue as no fluid loss, no smoke from exhaust, no overheating, no oil in the water or visa versa, I did get a code multiple misfires which after clearing a few times settled on misfire detected on Cylinder 4 I moved plugs around but fault came back still saying no4 so I moved the coil packs and still it said no4 so not plug nor coil pack. I blocked the EGR with a thin blade and the fault was still there rattling and a new code "insufficient flow through EGR system" I removed the blade, I also removed the EGR assembly thoroughly cleaned it, and the pipe to the intake manifold and used long brushes to decarbonisation the manifold once removed, I also cleaned up the throttle body and bought the specific cleaner for the MAF sensor, all of the above were dirty and will have benefitted from the good cleaning but they weren't the cause of the shake rattle and roll between 1450-1550 RPM so what else was there?? the injectors are electronically controlled pulse so as it was an easy test I dismantled just enough to remove them and move the one from no4 and put it in no1 cylinder, reassemble clear codes and run engine, fault obviously still there but importantly the fault code had moved with the injector, just to double confirm I repeated this process this time putting suspect injector into no3 cylinder and sure enough the new code said misfire No3, so I ordered a aftermarket set which were about $80AUD delivered, I installed them this morning and once the system depressurised the engine ran smooth, I erased codes and disconnected both battery systems to enable the car to reset to factory, at least that's how some forums recommended a full reset, after reconnecting batteries and trying a few times to get car to start it finally did and was smooth so I boxed everything up final check for fuel leaks, all good, out to road test. instantly she felt like a new car switching between ice and electric smoothly, acceleration back to full power, cruising excellant, no sign of feel of a misfire, no rattles bangs pops or shakes, it quite literally was perfect and a massive relief I had finally found and fixed the problem, shame my ODBC which has the Lexus software installed couldn't pick up the faulty injector out of the gate would have saved soooo muuuch time and effort, all up though it has cost me several hours researching and testing but less than a couple of hundred dollars to fix, heaven knows what a Lexus dealership would have tried to screw me for. I just have one tiny issue since reconnecting batteries there is a warning "Check Hybrid System" which is odd as on road test pressing the DISP button with right thumb on steering wheel I can see the system switching exactly as it is supposed to charging discharging and switching ice to electric and back, I feel there isn't an actual problem because there wasn't prior and this is just something that needs resetting so a little more research unless anyone can give me a clue. I hope my story helps others having same issue, I thank all forum inputs but nobody suggested injectors so maybe this can be added to list to be checked when encountering this mysterious shake rattle and roll of the ct200h.
Yes of course we mention the injectors because they are very common giving issues to these vehicles and actually the cause of fail in this case as well as the plugs... but very nice what you did... send me the hybrid codes to see how i can assist you 👋😎
@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics thanks you were the only person to mention injectors as a likely fault giving same issues, I had to arrive at that for myself by testing each thing in turn eliminating possible causes as I went, the injector I thought would have been more obvious when faulty not just low rpm's or a particular range, I was using too much logic. your video was very clear and helpful although I had fixed mine by the time I came across it I still thank you for putting it up to help us all. keep it up we all thank you and I was just adding my 2c worth to maybe help as well.
that rattling noise is one of the symptoms of blown head gasket. The same exact thing happened to my 2010 Toyota prius. I changed spark plugs the first time and it was good. Bu t the next day engine rattling came back and I found out it was the head gasket because overnight coolant seeps into the combustion chambers and we know that you cannot compress fluid or liquid thats why it rattles on cold start. I changed head gasket and all aasociated gaskets and seals, so far ao good. I'm already at 15k miles ever since.
The problem is is that it's an open deck engine design that type of engine design is inherently weaker because of all the assemblies and the sub assemblies that bolt together to make an engine in the Prius the reciprocating mass the pistons and the crankshaft are turning anytime the wheels are turning The engine may not be running but the Pistons are going up and down in their bores. Once the rattling starts damage is being done to the reciprocating mass whether the head gasket is leaking or not it usually is and then there's also a poor ring design for the oil control ring that causes excessive burning notice none of these problems existed in the 2004 to 9 1 NZ engine course we have four of those cars and they're all headed to 666,000 mi The two generation 3s we have couldn't get past the 300 mark One of them was shot at 150 K these are not the Toyotas that your father grew up with that is for sure We will not be moving forward with any more Prius purchases as anything in Toyota USA after 2009 planned obsolescence has been very well calculated and placed in 2010 and moving forward Toyota USA vehicles this is a fact
Same exact symptoms with 246K mi model 3. DIY’d head gasket with machine shop head rebuild. Full EGR, cooler and intake manifold cleaning, new NGK plugs, fuel injectors and coil packs. When apart also changed water pump. Used lots of Purple Power then reassembled. Cost all in with Amazon parts & $400 machine shop bill was just over $1,000. Same smooth results with 10 mpg improvement.
Coolant pours into a cylinder usually cylinder one then the rod comes through the block due to lack of lubrication. I've seen this happen to only the 3rd gen.
Great video! Thank you! I just subscribed. I think I need to change my head gasket, BUT I will first try cleaning my EGR, cleaning my injectors and replacing the spark plugs. How did you clean the injectors?
Y'all are saying cleaning the EGR valve but what you're not talking about is what the EGR valve has behind it that's directly connected to the exhaust manifold and that is the EGR cooler or intercooler
Hi and thank you for your valuable information. Could you pleas show us how did you took out the spark plugs without taking the rain wiper of and every thing els out its place
Can't be done. I just did this and tried to avoid taking all that off but it's impossible. Coils are too long and can't get them out, not enough space.
I have a 2012 prius v with 162k miles which i recently bought and the previous owner did not take good care of the car. I recently have cleaned the Mass air flow sensor, throttle body, changed the oil, cabin, engine and oil filter also changed the spark plugs. I Watched your videos and changed the coolant and inverter coolant also. Recently in the mornings or at night when it is cold, the engine makes noise like in this video for few seconds. The car drives smooth, i have checked the oil dipstick to see if it is soapy to indicate if coolant is leaking in it but its clean, coolant levels are good also. Do you think it could be dirty EGR? Only one light is on and thats the traction control, everything else is good.
Great job explaining this issue. Upon buying a used prius from this era, if spark plugs are replaced, egr is cleaned & car serviced upon purchase, will a new owner be able to evade the engine knocking? Im interested in buying one but want to educate myself to avoid major issues
Most times is just one of these issues, spark plugs, coils and egr dirty.... but be aware that head gasket is an issue too so donthe proper check first...
Check that the coolant level is not dropping even slightly. This will indicate a Head gasket that is starting to fail. You will find that the rattle is still present for a few seconds before it goes away but will keep getting worse over time
I have a Gen 2 Prius vs the Gen 3 you have here. The sparkplugs were replaced a few weeks ago. I was 2 miles or so leaving from home and all of a sudden the triangle came on, the engine stopped, and I coasted to a stop! Wow. Anyway I got it started, but it ran awful, clanky like the one in this video. I tried to drive on, but it did not smooth out. I managed to get it home. I cleaned the MAP sensor (did not seem dirty), replaced the air filter, made sure the throttle throat was reasonably clean, and I replaced the injectors with rebuilt ones. None of this resolved the problem. It may have run better a few seconds, i don't know. Could it be the EGR / carboned up manifold? The EGR system seems different than the Gen 3? Why did it go from running just fine to awful in about 1 second? These type things come on real gradual like. I don't see any indications of a blown head gasket, no smoke or coolant in the oil. Could it be bad gas?
Whilr engine is running pull plug wire off the spark plug one at a time and reconnect, the faulty plug or wire won't change the sound of the engine when disconnected
Mine ended up being egr tube and intake manifold. Disassembled all of it,cleaned it as well as the throttle body. Good as new. Took about an hour and a half.
@@gustavogiacominpinho3987 I came across some forums saying it is a gap near the wipers guard. If you drive throungh a heavy rain some of it couild leak thorugh the hood and if the rubber gasket around the coils are worn, some of the water can get through
Is it possible for this clutch damper to go bad on its own. I have a new Toyota hybrid with only 22000 miles and it makes a very slight rattling noise (similar to this) when warming up in the morning, maybe for the first few minutes or miles, then it stops. I've had the car checked by the dealership and they said the computers are not showing any misfires or other errors. Could it be just the dampener failing? Or, is it possible it's normal to have a slight rattle noise from the damper as the engine warms up and runs a little rough?
You MUST check and CLEAN the EGR cooler, EGR valve, the elbow pipe, intake manifold passages, the throttle body, PCV valve, the injectors! You MIGHT have to replace the spark plugs, or/and coils. After cleaning or/and replacing you MUST change the o-rings for the injectors, and the seals/gaskets for the throttle body and intake manifold. When all above done, you SHOULD do the "block test" on your cooling system. If it will get the positive test result then you will be sure that you have a blown head gasket :( which is casuing the coolant leak to the cylinders. You can find plenty of videos on YT how to do all of these procedures I pointed above. Good luck! :)
hi I have been following you for a long time...your videos are amazing and I learned a lot from them. I wonder if you have educational materials online aboute hybrid systems . thanks a lot for sharing your great knowledge .
you did not show us how you got the spark plugs and coil pack without taking the wiper motors and stuff???? did you take out the throttle body out of the manifold or you just fliped it?
So it's a L4 engine not a V4? I read the title and I'm thinking a four cylinder like my hybrid Lexus RX V6 that you have the intake manifold in the top but the engine 60°V6 is tilted and looks like a L3 but the intake on the top going back curves over the injectors and spark plugs on the other 3 cylinders, placed under the windshield up against the firewall and you remove the throttle plate from it and leave the coolant hose just pushed out of the way then after removing a 14 and two 12mm screws and egr hose from the back of intake, just lift out and then you can take out the other half of the plugs. It's 20 minutes in the four cylinder hybrid it's I wanna say a few hour on the 3MZFe V6.
Will the clogged egr passages cause a misfire at idle? I remember years ago Honda 4 cylinder engines would misfire under a load if some of the passages were clogged because all of the egr gasses would go to the cylinder where the passageway wasn't clogged. There is no egr at idle.
My 2013 Prius C (USA) has the exact sounds when it starts up. Took it to the mechanic and they said it needs the head gasket. $2,500 just for that plus if any parts are broken/needed in the process. Oil looks good not milky, coolant looks totally fine. What’s your input?
@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics Thank you so much for your quick response. Mechanic found no codes or cilynder misfiring. Went through smog smooth (less than a month). I feel like head gasket isn’t the solution. Car runs smooth on highway speeds and there is no rough idle except at the first 15seconds after the car has been setting for more than 5 hour or so. Coolant level is good and no discoloration. Thanks again
You can add a baffled oil catch can , you won’t get this rattling at start up anymore , the Priuschat forum has also confirmed this , I have installed this and no knocking at startup. You will be amazed at how much blowby and condensation oil is consumed at startup. Your catch can will prevent this.
How much would this repair cost? My wife's Prius is acting the same way, with the same miss fires (2, 4) and they are talking about replacing the flexplate/ and or flywheel for $3000.
@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics I did and no good. I was able to turn the flexplate by hand and could hear the rattle and a spring fell out. What do you think?
I need some advice I cleaned the egr and manifold and fuel injectors. I replaced head gasket and it still does this. Please tell me what else it could be because I'm tired of replacing things at this point
U could have a some mechanical problem by that I mean can have collapsed lifter worn camshaft lobes or worn cylinder walls worn piston rings producing blow by bend rod so all those are possible causes thank u have great day
Hi very informative keep up the good work. I'm a taxi driver and I'm looking to invest in a new car this year, either the (TOYOTA HYBRID VOXY/NOAH) or (NISSAN E-POWER SERENA) but I will like professional advice on which is better for taxi 🚕 work.
My 2014 Prius with 210,000 miles, intermittently has a small shutter sound in the engine compartment at speeds of 4 mph and up to 35 mph, I don't hear it over 40 mph. And I don’t feel it in the steering wheel or car at all. I took it to the dealer for service. He diagnosed misfiring, but could not observe any misfire. He said Spark plugs looked fouled. Service Technician recommended and preformed: Replacement the spark plugs and Replaced one coil of cylinder 4 and He also performed an ECU update. After service complete, I am experiencing the same small shutter, with a lot more frequently at the same speeds. It shutters often now. Will this cause any harm to drive it like this. I do a lot of long-distance Interstate highway driving at 65 to 80 mph in Texas and Louisianna?
My 2013 Prius had this shake. It turned out to be one bad coil pack (diagnosed by the check engine code). Replaced all coils and one spark plug. The EGR scenario fortunately was not the problem this time.
I have 2013 prius too and at 174000 miles can you please help me by exactly telling what you replaced? For now i have rattling noise when i start the engine and there is a check engine light that comes and goes
i have the same noise, i changed the headgasket rebuild injectors ... but still the same. In "N" no noise or really less; car is running ok with the electric motor but when the engine start the noise start also. If an idea i am ready. Thank you.
OK... So I had this noise come up in my 2010 Prius 3.... Attacked it first by cleaning the EGR Valve, then replacing the EGR valve, then spark plugs, then I cleaned the injectors, then I cleaned the EGR tube and intake EGR passages, then finally I replaced the Head Gasket. Still no joy. The exact shake and rattle changed slightly to begin with I was getting it to clear up by disconnecting the coil to Cylinder 1, but since the last bits, the coils don't stop it at all, but cylinder 4 disconnecting diminishes the shake and rattle. I'm not losing coolant (never was) so I don't think its an issue with the cylinders. I had a mechanic friend (who doesn't specialize in hybrids) tell me it COULD be the clutch plates damaged. Any thoughts out there to that end?
I have a problem with my hybrid car it’s a 2015 Toyota fielder, it’s being park for a while approximately 2week i went to start it, nd it started then the triangle light come on then the Engin light comes on also, then it shuts down, i went nd clean the battery’s contacts got it scanned, the da me faults comes back with the fault code C1310 nd C1259 would love to here back from u
My 2011 has always had this scenario when it is short cycled on a cold start. EG: need to move the car after being parked all night. Start it, move it, and shut it off before the engine can finish its initial warm and charge cycle. The next time the engine is turned on (that day. Not days later) it will clatter like that for 10 seconds or less and then even out. It may be a vapor/condensing issue in the cylinders from the short cycle.
Hi. I need help please. My 2010 prius, 97k miles , rattles on cold start when converting to engine. Rattle lasts for about 20 secs and then settles. Spent lot of money.. changed EGR, spark plugs, cleaned manifold. But made no difference. I keep a track of coolant level. There has been no coolant loss at all since last 5 months.. My mech says it can be broken spring of a worn fly wheel. As there is no drop in coolant level, could it be possible that its not the head gasket? Does flywheel noise present this way? Also. I notice that during start while still on battery, if I put the mode in D ( with brake applied) the rattling doesn't happen when the engine kicks, as long as gear is in D. The rattling happens when in P mode only and not when in D mode . Any idea what this could be ? Any help is appreciated.thanks
If that is a loud metallic rattle noise, then it might be coming from the metal cover of the exhaust intake manifold. Get some pray bar or long slim screw driver and try to push a little farther from the exhaust. If you will be able to access it and find the right spot - you will fix it. :) Good luck! :)

I am having the same issue i believe but the rattling noise does not persist. The rattling noise often starts when the engine is coming out of hybrid mode then it starts to rattle for a few seconds then stop.... then i wont hear the rattling sound again until a few days. Could it be one of those issue? My car is a 2017 toyota aqua with only 42 thousand mileage on it.
Can I ask you a question? I have the Same rattle in my 2010 Toyota Prius with 203k miles on it. There is a sloshy , watery sound behind the dash when the gas engine kick is in on start up or when the hybrid system kicks off at coasting lower speeds . Could this be the same thing, or the famous head gasket give out? Thank you in advance

I am unclear if the rattle was caused by the old plugs or EGR? Although not practical, would have been more diagnostic to do one or the other procedure, then retest.
Yes sir i did take to toyota and that happened to my previous prius 2011 too same thing i changed the engine transmission everything but still nothing worked and now with this one it happened first time and this car is on 174k miles so i am not sure what should i do i dont trust toyota too because they overcharged me for the diagnostic
That generation has high susceptibility to burning oil... Prius owners in North America also have a poor maintenance reputation (5k mile oil changes is crucial) PCV at spark plug change. (60k PCV is better) . Transmission fluid at 60k is good too. EGR should be done, symptoms or not, at 60k.
I don’t think we should be victim blaming, this is a poorly designed gas engine by Toyota. The head gaskets on these frequently fail, especially on cylinder #1.
@@jenobene710 stop driving the car immediately and prepare about 1000 dollars and call gasket master, I tried to fix myself, not worth the effort. And they have a 1 year warranty
Hi I’ve prius 2015 65k miles. Cleaned Throttle body ,EGR system , changed plugs . No misfire. But acceleration is like very heavy . Engine struggling no extra noise. Sometimes acceleration smooth and as it should be . But 85% the car is very heavy when accelerate not providing much power. Help me
This is what happened to my car.. got plugs changed and cleaned up.. I asked them to do a transmission oil change as well.. they gave me back the car and it started to shudder... I told them.. they were puzzled.. so brought it back..and now they said I need a new transmission>>>?? my trans was running fine... now I need a new one?? How can I fix it without needing a new one.. because it seems odd.. was working fine.. now it doesnt?? it shudders at lower speeds..????
That is exactly how mine is doing but it goes away when I give it gas and get the speed up! Doesn't do it all the time! Already put new plugs and new coils but it didn't fix it!
That knocking on cold start normally means the head gasket has failed, it’s a common issue on the Prius. The failure is normally the worst at cylinder #1. I can bo longer recommend buying these with such a critical design flaw. Toyota will charge you ~$4000 and that may be a bandaid fix depending on how long the coolant was seeping into the cylinders.
@@Pickleballrating I hope I get more than that. I replaced my head gasket, EGR cooler, PCV valve, major engine seals, water pump, etc. on my 2012 Prius V about 30k miles and 18 months ago. I haven’t had any coolant or engine oil loss in that time but apparently I didn’t clean out my intake manifold well enough because the EGR port is blocked. I noticed it a couple months ago and am just going to replace the manifold -it’s apparently an improved design.
hi everyone, if anyone can help me out here. i have got toyota prius 2018 100k miles on it. was losing very little coolant so decided to replace the water pump myself with genuine toyota part. after changing the water pump i have to top up coolant a lot. as this is car is used as taxi i top up at least three times a day. no visible leaks, pressure test done but no leaks. in the morning when i open the coolant tank to top up coolant it has air pressure when opening the cap like air trapped inside the system. also i don't see any oil contamination in the system as well. any help is much appreciated.
Probably not out of negligence but I’m a typical woman that was told only need to maintenance oil and tires and levels checked. This was new info to me and now I know to get this components checked
-Cleaned the EGR and cooler [super bad but not failed]
-Small pickup tube in the intake manifold for #1 cylinder that had the failure was clogged.
-Cleaned and re-assembled.
NO PROBLEM
My suggestion would be:
1. Pressure test the system or have a mechanic [start saving $$ for a 1200$ bill if it is worth it] IF IT HOLDS PRESSURE,
2. Replace the PCV from above and clean out the intake pickups, EGR tube, and since you have most of that stuff off pull the EGR with cooler, chemical clean. {all needs to be done and while you are there might as well}
Then what would you say how to fix it
It was diagnosed as a dirty EGR system, plugged-up EGR passages inside the intake manifold.
Great input. Thank you. My question is: how do you KN now it’s not head gasket damage? And to add to the point, my antifreeze fluid is going low frequently.
It could very well be a bad head gasket. Coolant level dropping is suspicious. Easy to test by putting a CO2 sniffer in the reservoir.
Or pressurize the coolant system and have a look at the headgasket with a borescope camera. The Wizard made a nice video about it recently.
DIY or by a mechanic?
The head gasket blew because of the rattling . It probably didn’t cause the rattling.
👍 Thanks for vid. Can also be problems with cylinder head gasket if rattle only occurs on cold starts.
You are right, which leads to engine failure.
Coolant pours into a cylinder usually cylinder one then the rod comes through the block due to lack of lubrication. I've seen this happen to only the 3rd gen.
Really enjoying the channel Jose, just full of content, Thank you
How were you able to take out the spark plugs without removing the plastics right above them and windshield wipers?
Great video! Thank you! I just subscribed. I think I need to change my head gasket, BUT I will first try cleaning my EGR, cleaning my injectors and replacing the spark plugs. How did you clean the injectors?
Ultrasonic and then use the flow analyzer
Mine had the same rattling 2010 ,clean egr valve and now runs smooth
How much did it cost? Mine is doing that now. I’m scared to let anyone but the dealership service it because it’s so complex.
@@naturegirl5681 I did it myself costs pretty nothing,u just need egr cleaner
Y'all are saying cleaning the EGR valve but what you're not talking about is what the EGR valve has behind it that's directly connected to the exhaust manifold and that is the EGR cooler or intercooler
Hi and thank you for your valuable information.
Could you pleas show us how did you took out the spark plugs without taking the rain wiper of and every thing els out its place
Can't be done. I just did this and tried to avoid taking all that off but it's impossible. Coils are too long and can't get them out, not enough space.
do you still need to know how?
Thanks for the videos, very professional. What is the model of the scanner you use?
Thank you... i have many but this one im using in the video is a launch x431 torque
You will find that the rattle is still present for a few seconds before it goes away but will keep getting worse over time
Great work, looking forward to attending your course. How can I get more info the course please. Thank you.

Interesting what course?
thank you for the video. This is precisely what my prius is sounding like. Out of curiosity could you share how much this job cost?
Clean the injectors properly first
Whilr engine is running pull plug wire off the spark plug one at a time and reconnect, the faulty plug or wire won't change the sound of the engine when disconnected
Mine ended up being egr tube and intake manifold. Disassembled all of it,cleaned it as well as the throttle body. Good as new. Took about an hour and a half.
I had same noise. Changed plugs changed a coil pack. Took apart the intake. It was a clogged EGR elbow.
Replaced spark plugs, injecters, and cleaned egr, manifold, egr cooler. Had motor rebuilt. Still has noise. Also, it says to put it in park.dampner?
You sir are a genius! Thank you!
Same thing happened on my Prius 2005 and it was 2 wet spark plugs and a coil that was causing it.
Any idea how the spark plugs got wet? Some leakage or something?
@@gustavogiacominpinho3987 I came across some forums saying it is a gap near the wipers guard. If you drive throungh a heavy rain some of it couild leak thorugh the hood and if the rubber gasket around the coils are worn, some of the water can get through
Awesome hope this is what my 400 Hybrid needs .. Thank you

Good luck! :)
This video was very useful for me, thank you so much.
Very reassuring video. I love the accent, mon!
Thanks for your video but I request please make video also how to open each parts and fix parts thanks
What chemical can we use for cleaning out the gunk from the manifold and EGR please...

Use just regular oven cleaner and then rinse with a high water pressure. Good luck! :)
I had a same experience with my previous Camry Hybrid. The problem was only the electrical connection to the injector was loosen.

you did not show us how you got the spark plugs and coil pack without taking the wiper motors and stuff???? did you take out the throttle body out of the manifold or you just fliped it?
No need to take out wiper motor at all... just use the proper tools and thats it...
@@losesparkplug1190 seems like that is quite a design flaw…that sucks

Will the clogged egr passages cause a misfire at idle? I remember years ago Honda 4 cylinder engines would misfire under a load if some of the passages were clogged because all of the egr gasses would go to the cylinder where the passageway wasn't clogged. There is no egr at idle.
Yes indeed… it is a daily stuff in eve systems
I have a 2012 and the rear suspension make a creaking noise. I'm in New York. The roads are not that good in in some areas
My 2013 Prius C (USA) has the exact sounds when it starts up. Took it to the mechanic and they said it needs the head gasket. $2,500 just for that plus if any parts are broken/needed in the process. Oil looks good not milky, coolant looks totally fine.
What’s your input?
Just clean properly the injectors and make sure to replace ignition coils and spark plugs for OEM replacements

Thank you so much for your quick response.

Service Technician recommended and preformed:
Replacement the spark plugs and
Replaced one coil of cylinder 4 and
He also performed an ECU update.
Thank you.
Is the HPCM located under the passenger seat.?
No… in the engine compartment
What if engine shake and coolant low, is that head gasket?
Most for sure yea
You're in Trinidad?
My cars is the same. In what state are you at.
hello master...... this issue can be caused by a intense use only in city short travel or other?????????
After some time it always comes... just by basic tunning up maintenance it shoupd be fine
No it cannot be clutch plate.. Check the pcv and fuel injector

Great video ! Thank you , I leatn a lot from your videos .

Good luck! :)

You MUST check and CLEAN the EGR cooler, EGR valve, the elbow pipe, intake manifold passages, the throttle body, PCV valve, the injectors!
You MIGHT have to replace the spark plugs, or/and coils.

I am unclear if the rattle was caused by the old plugs or EGR? Although not practical, would have been more diagnostic to do one or the other procedure, then retest.

Mine does that but it’s only whenever I turned on and than it goes off, I change the spark plugs and the coils but still do the sound
Clean the injectors properly as well as the egr
Since the EGR is closed at startup and idle, having clogged EGR ports shouldn't cause that misfire.

That knocking on cold start normally means the head gasket has failed, it’s a common issue on the Prius. The failure is normally the worst at cylinder #1.
I can bo longer recommend buying these with such a critical design flaw. Toyota will charge you ~$4000 and that may be a bandaid fix depending on how long the coolant was seeping into the cylinders.

hi everyone, if anyone can help me out here. i have got toyota prius 2018 100k miles on it. was losing very little coolant so decided to replace the water pump myself with genuine toyota part.
after changing the water pump i have to top up coolant a lot. as this is car is used as taxi i top up at least three times a day. no visible leaks, pressure test done but no leaks. in the morning when i open the coolant tank to top up coolant it has air pressure when opening the cap like air trapped inside the system. also i don't see any oil contamination in the system as well. any help is much appreciated.
EGR valve and relatives components.
Sometimes yes... but most common are the injectors and spark plugs 👋😎
It looks like the owner of the car simply do not take care of the car at all.
Yes indeed 🥲
Probably not out of negligence but I’m a typical woman that was told only need to maintenance oil and tires and levels checked. This was new info to me and now I know to get this components checked
👌
53k km and it ratels like that .. wasn’t Toyota meant to be reliable?
Fuel… not Toyota 🥴🥴🥴
All the loud music. 🙄
