    I am a practitioner of Uechi-ryu since 1988, and I have always been interested in Ryuei-ryu but I never practiced it. It´s an amazing style. But today you can find Ryuei-ryu dojos in Europe, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, USA, so it´s not a secret style anymore.

      @@uvw456-s MMA is a sport. Traditional Okinawa martial arts are for self defense. You will never see a Krav Maga, or a Penjack Silat, or an Okinawan traditional Karate practitioner on a cage fight, because it doesn´t work that way. I tested Uechi-ryu many times in real situations because I worked as a police officer for many years. It is very effective. We must practice martial arts with a huge sense of responsability. Combat sport is something else.

    All known Karate styles are linked to Shuri-Te, Naha-Te or Tomari-Te. These 3 towns Shuri, Naha and Tomari are very close together but Okinawa is much bigger. So I asked myself if there arent any unpopular quite different styles. Even Ryuei Ryu was located close to Naha and doenst look so much different than other Karate styles.

      @@kirkstonebotanicalsforgrow5424 Correct though he be, I believe @Fwibos was making memetic reference to Jesse "The Karate Nerd" Enkamp's "catch phrase" that Okinawa is the birthplace of karate, followed by another memetic reference (broadly internet-cultural) by referring to @kaifinn, who seemed not to catch the reference to Jesse Enkamp, as "not a gentleman of culture" - a meme which implies that only cultured individuals understand the OP's references, which I personally typically read as a tongue-in-cheek bit of fun poked at both the referencer and the one who missed the reference.

    Some stiles only are on Okinawa, also some families. Others come to Japan and others gain the world. And finally internet is join all together. The problem on my point of view are federations and championship games.

    • @martinabreu566

      Absolutely. I went to Okinawa 3 times, to learn more about Uechi-ryu, and I´ve met some Karate practitioners who only practiced their family style. No federation, nothing outside theis style. The more incredible Uechi-ryu sensei I met was outside any federation or group of Karate. I trained in his house, with one student oh his (they said he had only 5 students). They had no graduations, it was all very old school. But very painful.

      @Gieszkanne No all of them. Uechi-ryu came from chinese Pangai Noon. It has nothing linked to the styles you mentioned. There is a very little martial art in Okinawa called Udonti, there is Kingai-ryu, Hakutsuru Ken, and yes there are secret family styles. Ryuei-ryu is now known outside Okinawa. But when a style go outside Okinawa to be practiced by other people by other cultures there is always changes done by the masters. I studied many years by the pioner of Karate in Europe, sensei Henry Plée, and he used to say that what is taught to 99% of people in all dojos are juste 1/3 of the first level (exoteric level). It's like an iceberg.

  • @Mrcashewww

    I guarantee you it doesn’t work. Styles that abhor competition don’t work since you can’t practice your karate with full force.

    • @briannewman9285

      You can't practice your karate with full force in competition either. Many, many techniques are illegal (e.g. rabbit punch, elbow to the back of the head, certain chokes) and many others are heavily modified (for example, even in competitive systems where eye gauges are permitted, they are usually taught with the palm down). You've also got the issue that competition usually involves one-on-one interactions, which permit you to get down on the ground and grapple with someone without worrying about someone else coming up and hitting you in the head with something. If you want to learn street-effective martial arts, look at what is taught in the military or in systems for certain police forces.

    • @Mrcashewww
