okay
you put some respek on LowTierGod's name 😭
I remember how the usual loudmouths in the community used to give Viscant massive amounts of shit for "writing guides for MVC3 without winning anything" and right after that he went and took EVO
Must have felt good
People still discredit Viscant because he "only won vanilla MvC3" to this very day. The FGC is fuckin stupid.
Those were just LTGs alt accounts, he's still trying to wash the taste out of his mouth.
@@mostverticalproductions4808 He put LTG in his place, that was the greatest moment in FGC history. I don't remember who won evo each year, but I will always remember when he embarrassed ltg.
@@Pax_Mayn3 LOL
There's a really great quote from Viscant somewhere in which he's saying that he knew that HAD to be his year, 'cause since his execution wasn't as good as most of the other top players, he had to rely in his strategic skill to come up with something before the game was too much 'solved'
Man literally told me years ago that he can't do shoryuken inputs guaranteed, so he tries to play characters with good AA normals.
@@SuperGitaroomanfelt this
@airthrowDBTohh akuma seth and cammy sagat . Damn near whole cast lmfao
The real MVP here is Viscant's self-awareness. He knew in himself he couldn't constantly play someone like Magneto, so he looked at what best fits his mechanical skill and won
There’s a lesson in here about being honest with yourself about your abilities so you can play to your strengths
As a devoted Street Fighter and Fatal Fury player for my whole life, the fact that anyone can make calls in such a fast pace game is literally beyond my compacity for thought.
That verbal combo he hit on Dale will forever be a top moment!

Oh wow didn't know Viscant was that good on MvC3, I know him for his fight against LowTierGod on SFIV, gonna watch it before bed. Great video as always man, love your commentaries on historical fighting matches, hope you have a great day!
Same, I'll never forget that video. Watching LTG's ego get rekt gives such a Justice boner
He himself said he sucked at SF4 which makes his LTG beatdown even funnier in hindsight
"Let's go Viscant, EVO champ!"
I remember when that beef started, and I was thinking, "wait viscant plays street fighter?" 😂
@@attitude2492I was a blanka main so I knew who he was, didn’t know about him playing marvel until he won evo
Marvel 3 is like this:
Ok ok, I get the strategy. Ok it makes sense. Ok nice picks, nice sinergy.
Then the gameplay starts and it's all like:

XD
@airthrowDBT You say that like there's better notation options to choose from.
@airthrowDBT What about 623 though?
Shoutouts to Viscant, the best Fate of Two Worlds player ever. Miss that dude
Viscant's wesker was such a beast. Especially when level 3 xfactored.
I will never forget when Viscant banished LowtierGod to the shadow realm.
Did a watch party last night, such a fire set lol
As a San Diego resident, I've been able to run into Viscant in years past at locals and the like. In Ultimate, he eventually switched to Zero/Doom/Vergil but sometimes in casuals, he'd bring out his vanilla Wesker/Haggar/Phoenix team which I always found fun to watch in Ultimate even with Phoenix haha!
I remember him sometimes talking about what would be a theoretical optimal Phoenix team in Ultimate, factoring in the usual things but putting an emphasis on meter build. It's hard to remember all that stuff now but one of the teams he theorized I believe was Zero/Doom/Phoenix, which is the team PZPoy used. Peak Marvel 3 days were so much fun.
The Morrigan expertise that came after Chris G has basically removed Phoenix from top tier. That may or may not be a 'best phoenix team', but any modern Phoenix team is functionally going to be disadvantaged against a Morrigan team or a Zero team with two good assists.
@@ProzacStylings RyanLV, the modern age of UMvC3, and even tier lists and discussions during ChrisG's dominance would say otherwise.
@sdstig Lmao. One, "the modem age of UMvC3" is exactly what proves phoenix is no longer top tier. There were no phoenixes in the $25,000 '23 Evo top 8. None. Events are consistently dominated by a top tier that doesn't involve her. Two, I specifically said "That came after Chris G". Three, what RyanLV says is irrelevant, as are tier lists. Theorycrafting is dogwater in comparison to results, and results prove that phoenix cannot compete on the level of zero/morrigan in the modern marvel.
The only legitimate purpose of theory crafting is to attempt to explain results. The explanation for why Zero/Morrigan > Phoenix is easy. Zero has the best snap mixups in the game and gets to use two assists and meter. Morrigan has soul drain combos, and can play aggressively when she wants to use them.
The more people perfected the gameplay of Zero and Morrigan, the less possible it became to play against them with one assist and no meter, and expect to keep your phoenix or your meter.
Lol, Justin took Dark Phoenix shouting, “RUN” literally. God, it was hilarious seeing people’s reaction to Phoenix.
Kinda forgot D.Phoenix actually has "RUN" as a voice clip!
XD
Crazy to me seeing all these comments from people talking about Viscant in all these different eras of FGC. I first remember Viscant from X-Men vs Street Fighter discussion on the AOL GameWiz boards, way back in the days before GameFAQs even existed.
Viscant dominated marvel at its infancy and people later figured out its weaknesses and how to deal with his team. RyanLV is the one i truly believe figured out marvel especially at the height and tailend of its popularity
his team had too many win conditions and he had backup plans so his team never felt like it falls apart when he loses any one of his characters
RyanLV is a phenomenal player, but his team is far from the peak of marvel and did not have a lasting impact on the (still active) meta. The reality is that phoenix teams lose to Morrigan and Zero teams - either because of meter steal combos, or Zero getting to snap and mix your whole team while you're down an assist and can't use meter.
Marvel IS mostly figured out now - some characters are better than they were, like MODOK / Hulk, some are worse, but it's still mostly Zero / Doom / Vergil / Morrigan / Magneto at the top, and Chris G was probably the most significant example.
100%!! I loved a game Kbrad hosted and I forgot who RyanLV was "playing" - but whoever it was used every resource, exhausted every option, got lucky in every mix-up and actually killed Phoenix. You could almost feel a relief in the crowd, and then Morrigan came in and landed a one hit-infinite and Kbrad said something like "You did it! You did the nearly impossible and took out RyanLV's Phoenix! And here's your prize! A LV5 Morrigan and Chun!" ahahh
@@ProzacStylings I'm not sure you're point really contradicts his. I agree with his sentiment, at that point Marvel had been out for about 5-6 years and the top 100 was filled with Zero May Crys and Morridoms and the Magnitels and the one off teams like Wolf/Storm/Akuma and Firebrand/Doom/Skrull that were very player specific with tons of practice. RyanLV came onto the scene and destroyed every tournament with an unusual team that nobody could touch- both due to his phenomenal skills, quick judgment and knowledge of the game. After his win, MvC died out. I don't think he was saying that RyanLV's team was the meta, but it was the last year in which a challenger brought an unconventional team up that took everyone by storm.
It's easy to say how one team loses to another in theory, but it's different in practice.
I think you're right as it relates to MvC being mostly explored, and the only recent new team I've seen make waves was IHeartJustice a few years ago and most recently LiberalTerminator bringing back Nova and Spencer - I don't think there's been any real change to the meta since the mid-teens
@@TheWorstType This is wrong in pretty much every way.
For one, 2023 Evo Marvel dwarfed any year where Ryan was a star. It had twice the entrants of 2016. If anything, Marvel was dead while Ryan was making waves, and increased in popularity since.
Two, the meta HAS changed significantly. Phoenix was still a top tier contender when Ryan won, there were other serious phoenix contenders, his team was only particularly notable because Chun. Phoenix is no longer top tier. The Zeros and Morrigans today are much better, and Phoenix has very little chance surviving a Zero+assists neutral into snap, and every morrigan contender will land her soul drain combos. There were no phoenix finalists in '23 top 8 evo, it was dominated by the better Zero and Morrigan players, as has been the case with almost all majors for about two years.
Lastly, yes, obviously my "his techniques are outdated" directly contradicts the idea that RyanLV "solved" Marvel. The only players that can be considered to have "solved marvel" are the players that pioneered the beginnings of what wins most tournaments now, which is early Zero players and Chris G. Everyone else was just trying less effective techniques and hoping the zero/morrigan they were playing wasn't good enough.
@@ProzacStylings So I see in your comments that you have a habit of arguing against things that weren't actually said - and then kind of want to show off your knowledge I guess?
I said: After his win, it died out. Which is factual, until the resurgence post pandemic- it didn't even feature until an tiny 2021. His win was the last year it was popular until recently.
Two: How are you going to say in your first comment that the meta hasn't changed that much aside from a few changes, and then tell me how drastic the meta has changed, and then only speak on Phoenix? Nobody here said the team is unbeatable or the best.
The point being said was that as Marvel died out from public popularity - the peak seemed to be in 2017, which is accurate, and to your point even post the peak. It's getting a new one now, but the game, like YOU said has not changed in any meaningful way considering the top 8s. 2017 was the last time a new, inventive style/team took people by storm and tossed out the old rules, we haven't seen that since.
I get that your passionate and knowledgeable but - yes, I'm going to be wrong in everything I say if you keep making up the things you think I said instead of what I actually said.
If youll notice, nobody is disagreeing with you - I said your point doesn't contradict his. It's an additional point that's semi-adjacent.
I went to high school in Claremont California with Viscant. I knew him as Jay, and he would battle with me at the YAC right next to the high school, where there were a couple arcade games there. One of which was Marvel Super Heroes and X men vs Street Fighter. We had some legendary battles back then. He had an extremely good Shuma Gorath, and in xmen vs sf i would play my team of Charlie/juggernaut against Viscant. He was definitely one of to toughest players to compete against even back then. Good times.
All these moments bring back so much good memories from my teenage years. Ive said it before but ill say it again, thank you for making these videos
We used to travel from AZ to Nickle palace in San Diego just to have a chance to bump into anyone from that scene. They were all so good at their respected games. This was well before mvc3.
@airthrowDBT I never made to SHGL but i did make it to Family Fun arcade in the early 2000s and it was just magical. The level of friendliness was only matched by the level of play.
22:20 This is by far one of my favorite FGC moments. I remember I was just getting into marvel and hated Phoenix so much😂 That Tron's super was sick!
Viscant is such an underrated player, good to see videos like this for sure. He was such an inspiration for me
NO HES NOT... HE WAS NEVER A FACTOR IN SF OR MARVEL AFTER THAT EVO... REMEMBER THIS IS LIKE A RANDOM WINNER TOURNEY CAUSE THE GAME WAS NEW AND FILLED WITH BUGS. AFTER VANILLA HE WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND

Viscant is an OG in the FGC, gotta love him.
Viscant is one of the smartest, most strategic players to ever grace the FGC. Also his old SRK posts were informative and entertaining.
How was he in MVC2
@@DETROIT_CUTHOAT he technically invented Team Thrax and found the synergy for Storm and Sentinel before everyone else.
yeah he was an encyclopedia of information back in the day lots of theorycrafting min maxing
I didn't know that damn
Has me missing MvC3, here's to hoping MvC4 gets released
It’s funny in hindsight knowing that marvel 3 players were dismissive of Phoenix as a win condition at first glance (if memory serves there were even rumblings at the time that she would be better being played straight up on point, take that with a grain of salt though). Credit to Viscant and Fchamp for being ahead of the curve on that one.
It was obvious to anyone w a brain honestly. Zero and Phoenix deniers where always delusional
And vanilla Dante was such a big thing potential wise it took a lot of the attention until he got nerfed
I think it was less they were dismissive of Phoenix as a win condition and more thinking it would be foolish to try and do that in a tournament setting. Even really early on in MvC3's life everyone knew how powerful Phoenix was with Level 3 X-factor. I remember the message boards complaining about her. In a Casual setting it's really easy to get her active but less so against skilled players who know how to get the snap back and trap her. The struggles Viscant suffered trying to keep her alive is testament to that.
None of this is true. It was a soft ban on Phoenix where most top players in vanilla just thought she was cheap and refused to play her. Jay has problems with execution so dark phoenix strat worked. This video is just wrong lol.
@@zphdbbox
It REALY is.
I came to the comments (presuming most aren't bots) to see how many bandwagoners would hop saying the same BS when everyone and their mother knew Dark Phoenix was straight up cheap.
Love the breakdown! Really enjoy your commentary on UMvC3 and all the explanations. It makes it really easy for someone who enjoys watching UMvC3 to understand but doesn't get the techincal side of the gameplay.
Always gold time in this channel!
I really can't wait for the stories and trivia about the MvC2 era, in order to ride the hype of the incoming collection!
Great vid as always, the audio levels were a bit weird at the Viscant vs Justin Wong segment at around 12:00, commentary is way too loud compared to you.
Pre-SRK, Viscant was a prominent poster on Gouki’s Page of Whatever (GPOW) forums. I remember him posting high level MvC1 tech in the late 90s
GPoW?? That's a name I haven't heard since the KLOV days.
Wow glad to see viscant get credit i didnt know anything about marvel and thought was the best at the game at the time when i started watching fgc streams because of what he was figuring out and the tech he had before anyone else. It's great to see this highlighted openly! His tech and strategy was really ahead of it's time.

What an amazing documentary, i dont even play fighting games and i find this stuff fascinating
Man, I have so many good memories of Evo 2k11. My friends and I were at the PR room playing casuals and PR Balrog showed up. I remember asking him shouldn’t he be resting since he was on top 8 for Marvel and he just shrugged it off. Later that night, as I was talking with Orbital, another player from PR, he told me that he was acting like he didn’t care but in reality he felt that he could take it.
Last time I saw Jay, he was at a San Diego local playing Street Fighter 6.

Honestly, that comeback from PR Balrog with Tron was damn impressive.
I remember thinking the team didn't make any sense to me at the time and how it seemed weaker than the other top tier teams. Boy was I wrong! What a great recap!
Another great one. I thought it was about RyanLV by title alone. Imo he solved phoenix in the new age with his Chun/Morrigan/Pheonix team. Being able to factor in time outs with THC infinites was so huge for Phoenix.
I fully agree with that. Probably the most optimal way to play Marvel 3
@@PapaLobsternah ZMC
One of my old roommates was a Wesker main. And yeah, he was usually winning against us in the house when we would play some matches. But eventually I figured out how to use Dante, Deadpool and Amaterasu in an effective enough way to completely shut him out.
Amaterasu has some really good stage filling attacks that catch wesker so to speak. Then Deadpool is able to play keep away really effectively, while Dante is better for going in for the blitz.
Then both dp and dante have their gun supers, so those combo together nicely; especially with amaterasu bringing down a lightning bolt on the enemy to keep them stationary.
Oh, and Amies wind swap move was really useful against Wesker as well. Those two moves of hers, plus the ice shot mode basically made her invincible against Wesker. But if he got her down, DP and Dante came in to clean up.
This was my favorite part of Marvel!!! Theorycrafting against a team that was winning against you.
I did the same against my buddies Morrigan team. I low key love the team you made too and think it's really strong

Usually your videos are good, but there's a decent bit of misinformation here. Everyone knew from almost day 1 that Dark Phoenix was the best character in the game and it wasn't really close. She was often banned in lower levels of play, so trying to make it seem like Viscant made some ground breaking discovery (when literally in your video he plays against FChamp ffs) is just disingenuous at best.
Congratulations man! Over 30k subscribers in a year. I remember when you showed up out of nowhere like it was yesterday 😂
