      I didn't realize until she dropped his wedding ring on the floor. Don't feel bad that you didn't catch the twist either. It is one of the most iconic twists of all time. The boy actor also stared in Forrest Gump, he played little Forrest. Unfortunately he had a rough time growing up to adulthood (I won't go into it here), but as a side not, he did receive an Oscar Nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this roll. Take care dear! XOXO

      My dad figured it out in the scene where Cole confesses his secret in the hospital. He wrote it down so he could prove it to me but didn't actually tell me at the time. I didn't figure it out until very, very late. Like I didn't even get it when the ring fell. I didn't realize until it showed him with the blood on the back of his shirt and then flashed back to him lying on the bed. I would have given the movie a 3 out of 5 until that ending. Plus, it made me seek out other movies by M. Night Shamalan. I also really liked "Unbreakable," "The Village," and "Signs."

  • @herrzimm
    @herrzimm ปีที่แล้ว +137

    You did not fail. This movie has one of the greatest "twist endings" in movie history BECAUSE of how they told the story through focusing on the child the whole time. They gave you JUST enough to think that Bruce's character was simply helping another "struggling child" through his issues and how this was going to be the one that restored his faith in his own abilities after the failure of having a former patient turn out so bad. So, you are SET UP to think of it as a "redemption story" by helping Cole out. That Cole gets better and Malcolm can be "vindicated" as a professional child psychologist.
    But the twist is that Malcolm was really so good at helping children through their issues and reconnecting with their families, that even in death, he wasn't able to "be freed" without helping at least "one more" and in the process, he ends up vindicating HIMSELF as a person.

    • @audsunheatpumpgroup9812
      @audsunheatpumpgroup9812 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think it's the other way, Malcolm was seeking Cole's help, same as the other ghosts, to redeem himself as he failed Vincent in the past for not believing him.
      Cole knew Malcolm was a ghost at the start, that's why he ran from him at the start and wasn't surprised to see him at his house, but Malcolm's experience eventually got through to Cole, that ghosts aren't there to hurt him, he is like a beacon, they are seeking his help to fulfill their unfinished regrets.

And then, like you said, they get you so focused on the boy's story that by the time "I see dead people" is revealed we long have believed Malcom survived and is helping him. We don't pay attention to the clues. It's brilliant filmmaking.

  • @thatpatrickguy3446

    Great reaction!
    Neither me nor any of my friends saw the twist until it was revealed at the end, which surprised us since we're often trying to figure out any possible twists to movies in the suspense category (like this one), but M. Night did such a great job disguising it. The only person who interacted with Malcolm after he was shot was Cole, and while Malcolm was in many scenes with other people after meeting Cole, he didn't interact with any of them. At best he spoke to them and they paid no attention to him. Even when he was sitting there with Cole's mom she never spoke to him, and while they seemed to be looking at each other it was obvious in hindsight that she was just staring into space as she waited for Cole to come home.
    I ended up really liking the teacher. Though he was upset at being reminded that he was a stutterer, something he had worked hard to hide, you got the sense that he understood Cole and tried to help him feel included. It was one person who had probably been called a freak in school (for stuttering) helping another student who was called a freak and ostracized for his "freakishness". It was obvious in the way that he spoke to Cole before the play, and had probably made the decision to cast Cole as the lead in the Sword in the Stone, that he liked Cole and wanted to try to make him feel included instead of left out.
    The three main actors in this movie were so incredibly good: Bruce Willis as Malcolm, Toni Colette as Cole's mom, and Haley Joel Osment as Cole. I think they all deserved awards for their work in this movie, especially young Haley Joel.
    My favorite Haley Joel Osment movie is Secondhand Lions, which is a (mostly) happier movie that came out a few years after this one. Absolutely worth a watch and a reaction.

    Brilliant film making here. When Cole reveals to Bruce's character his "secret" every word he says is constructed so that it also serves as a slowly dawning revelation for the audience at the end for why both we and Bruce didn't know he was a ghost. "They don't know they're dead." "They only see what they want to see." I was so immersed in the movie that when the ring dropped I was confused. Then, when Cole's voice began I heard every word he said as realization dawned on me.

I remember the only thing I thought was odd was when the child took a bus to the funeral - like why didn't his doctor drive him? But, when you're in a dark theater watching, you don't have time to pause and really think about it before the next scene. There were three teenage boys sitting right in front of me, and one boy's popcorn went flying in every direction when he leaped to his feet! I think of him every time I see that scene.
    Don't feel bad about not guessing "the twist" ending. In the following weeks I read/watched everything about this movie, including exit interviews with stunned audience members, and everybody was surprised. Since then I've heard a few people insist they knew "the first five minutes" but they must be Wednesday Addams weirdos to think that way automatically.

    First of all, great reaction!
    Secondly, the disorder you are referring to is called "Munchausen by Proxy" syndrome. It is very real and very serious! I have always thought that is EXACTLY what the mother was going through. While fathers can also be diagnosed with this, it is very, very rare.
    I'm a man, and while I do have a daughter, unfortunately did not raise her (very long story). I don't know what it is like to be a mother (and the hormones and emotions a woman & mother go through), I don't want to judge. I have to be honest though, to me it is just EVIL! When you do have strong feelings and thoughts that will hurt (or worse) another human being, you must find a different way to cope...especially when it is your own child who you are supposed to protect and they have 100% trust in you to love and protect them!
    I know Postpartum Depression is another very serious condition that can lead to a mother hurting or even killing their own children.
    Please, any mother (or father) who has negative emotional feelings towards their children, you must see a doctor or professional for help!!!
    P.S. Fathers can also get Postpartum Depression, but it is called PPND (Parernal Postnatal Depression).

    • @johnplaysgames3120
      @johnplaysgames3120 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You mentioned a few different conditions in your comment so I'm not sure if you're conflating the motivations behind all of them or if I'm connecting dots that you didn't intend, but, just in case, I just want to add to your comment that my understanding is that Munchausen By Proxy is not about the parent disliking their child or having negative emotions toward their child. Munchausen Syndrome -- NOT the "by proxy" version -- has to do with people making themselves sick (or pretending to be sick, exaggerating symptoms, etc) in order to get attention and sympathy. Munchausen By Proxy is a related mental illness in which the parent or other caretaker uses their child's "illness" to get attention and sympathy for themselves (thus the "by proxy" part).
      They might make the child sick through various means (poison, suffocation, etc). Or, in many cases, they don't even actually make the child sick. Instead, they invent and exaggerate symptoms the child supposedly has (which the doctors just can't seem to track down with their tests), or actively alter or contaminate tests (contaminating a urine sample, for instance) in order to maintain this illusion of the child being ill. Why? So they, the parent/caretaker/whoever can get attention, sympathy, and admiration for being the "heroic" person who's "selflessly" taking care of the sick person and "bravely" facing the difficulty of this situation that they "obviously didn't ask for and would never wish for." It doesn't seem to have anything to do with disliking the child or wanting to get rid of them. It's way more egocentric and delusional than that.
      Most likely, the mom didn't intend to kill the daughter (because that would be the end of her "attention and sympathy" gravy-train). She just wanted to keep her sick so the people around would look at her as this heroic caretaker selflessly taking care of her sick child. The mom was just too mentally ill and caught up in her own compulsions to know when to stop and kept doing her thing until it went one time too many. Unfortunately, she did have another daughter so, when the older daughter's body gave out, the mom had to move on to making the younger daughter sick in order to keep feeding her need to be looked at as a selfless, heroic caretaker deserving of sympathy because of all the trials she's going through with her sick children.
      It can be hard to get reliable statistics because people with MSP tend to deny there's a problem, get very good at lying (to the point where they may not even realize they're lying about it anymore), and because doctors tend to try to chase down and rule out actual potential illness before they ever stop to consider that the patient isn't actually sick and the caretaker is lying. You just wouldn't assume that right out of the gate, right? That being said, research suggests that the death rate for victims of MSP is about 10%. So, yeah, generally the intention isn't to kill the person. The intention is just to keep them sick (or appearing to be sick) in order to garner attention and sympathy for the caretaker. Their actual feelings for their child very likely don't enter into the equation at all and the child is just a means to an end.

      @@johnplaysgames3120 When I was talking about intentionally wanting to hurt children I was referring to PPD & PPND.
      As far as Munchhausen by Proxy, the biggest parts are to get attention and deceive people. So most likely, they are not going to seek help before doing harm to children. They usually are always in denial as well. That really is unfortunate because it is a very serious form of child abuse.

    ❤ Great thriller! Was our intro to twisted endings of M. Night Shyamalan. Most of us were completely surprised by this ending, and we shouldn't have been. "I see dead people... they don't know they're dead." Is the key to the whole thing. Dr. Crowe helps someone, and Cole gets past his fear. Both are able to move on. I often wondered if Dr. Crowe ever revisited Cole as a follow-up appointment. As a doctor, he should have.

    Nobody saw the twist back when the movie was released. Those that say they did are lying. This movie (along with a few others released around it that I wont spoil) are what pretty much started the twist trope, or at least popularised it to the point where a movie twist is now a common thing. Now we expect twists and are more armed to see them coming, but back when this movie came out, the big twist was a delightful surprise. It was a cultural moment and the subject of much discussion.

    On the video DVD, in the director summary, he said that he left clues in the movie. He said that any scene that had red in it (red sweater, red doorknob, red balloon, etc) was a clue that a spiritual presence was in the scene. When you rewatch the movie, you see all the red markers that the director left for you to catch on. Nobody caught onto these clues, so it wasn't just you (me too).

    This may be my favorite reaction ever. I loved every minute of it. You are ADORABLE! This movie is a classic. 99% didn't see the twist coming. This movie STARTED the trend of movies trying to create twist endings. I just recently discovered you and think you are fantastic. One quick thing: 16:25 That's the writer and director: M. Night Shyamalan. He got nominated at the Oscars for Best Director and Best Screenplay. Toni Collette- the mom- got nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Haley Joel Osment got nominated for Best Supporting Actor (and should've won). This movie took their careers to new heights. It was also nominated for Best Picture. M Night has had many hits and (like Alfred Hitchcock) always plays a small role in his films. One more thing- I also saw your incredible reaction to Forrest Gump. Haley Joel Osment was Forrest Gump Jr. I was waiting for you to recognize him from that.

    When I first saw this movie I figured out the twist in the scene immediately after the play when Cole & Malcolm are talking. When Cole said "We're not going to see each other anymore, are we?" and talked about how Malcolm could talk to his wife while she was sleeping it suddenly occurred to me that Cole had helped Malcolm just like he had helped out the ghost of the girl who had been poisoned by her mom. That's why he knew they weren't going to see each other again: because he knew Malcolm could move on now. Then I started thinking back to see if there were any hints I hadn't noticed that would back that up, and I realized that since being shot nobody had ever directly talked to Malcolm except Cole.
    Of course, that meant that I wasn't really paying attention in the scene where Cole tells his mom, because all I could think about was how everything pointed to Malcolm being dead. It wasn't until the 2nd time I watched this movie that I really caught how great and emotional that scene in the car is.
