This was modern football back then, now its ridiculous wages with a over perfect pitch & a ball with the dynamics of a ping pong ball. It was a man's game too & now looks an under 21s game. World Cup I will give a big miss & watch any game from the 1960s to 1999 here on TH-cam.
I shall watch these uploads rather than the woke obsessive, politically correct World Cup It's a sporting event - not a vehicle for overblown gay issues.
Even though this montage is from the early 70s, the excitement and skills show how superior this era was to the Premier League. I was lucky to see most of the top players in the old First Division from the late 50s. The skills of George Best, Jimmy Greaves and Alex Young to name a few, would have lit up the Premier League. These great players often played on muddy pitches and would have thrived on the near perfect playing surfaces they have all year round today. The Saturday 3pm kick off was part of the sporting fabric of society until TV companies took control of the kick off times. Now many fans arrive home at midnight after midweek games. or travelling from away fixtures on Sunday evenings. All to pay huge salaries to often average players. I recall attending an FA Cup 4th round game at Goodison Park in January 1974 v West Brom at 1pm on a Sunday, which the first ever on that day. The then Sunday trading laws prevented the host club from charging fans to enter. Instead, you had to buy a single page programme as the price of admission. The match was played on Sunday due to power cuts and Liverpool playing at home on the Saturday. The Cup match ended 0-0 in front of 53,000 fans and an atmosphere like nearby Anfield Cemetary. The great singer songwriter, Ray Davies got it right in his hit Autumn Almanac, I like my football on a Saturday, roast beef on a Sunday, all right.
Lovely that the microphones at that time still picked up random shouts and cries from individuals in the crowd- there are some real period pieces if you listen closely, especially the boys chanting "what a load-er rubbish" after the own goal, and some pretty strong language too.
Some tough tackles, but watching some who were tackled leaving them clutching & grimacing on the ground, but when the ref ignored them, they got up & walked away, but that's Londonium for you.
Malcolm Allison admitted it was a mistake to sign him for City. He bought him to help get City over the line as they were chasing the title and looking very good. But Marsh arrived unfit and it all unravelled in the last stages of the season.
When commentators were allowed to present seriously without the obligatory stupid grinning and humour all the time. Yes Jimmy Hill was a bit outspoken on this occasion and the referee wasn't gven a chance to defend hmself but at least it was more natural.
Funny when Palace are shown beating Pompey and then straight after was Peter Marinello...OK at the Gunners,Rubbish at Pompey but a good career at Hibs.
Yes im sure after Millwalls final game the crowd thought Birmingham playing elsewhere had lost which meant Millwall went up but that info was incorrect
@@dlamiss Millwall were at home to Preston (also covered by the big match) and won 2-0 and like you said we thought we had gone up, Fans were dancing around the pitch celebrating then news came through that we hadn't. Birmingham still had a game in hand against Orient away and if they had lost wall would have gone up. Brum won and that was that 😒
@@dlamiss it was a bit before my time (I was born in 77) but my dad told me all about it. Birmingham played Wall at St Andrews about a month before the end of the season, brum won 1-0 with a disputed goal and that was what separated the two teams at the end of the season. There's footage of the game on TH-cam, Latchford scored but my old man always said it should've been disallowed for offside, and he hated brum and Latchford from there on lol! Anyway we got to promise land eventually in 88 😉👍🏻
Hard to believe this is more than 50 years ago. I can't stand modern football, but I can watch matches from this era all day long.

Currently watching this instead of England in the 2022 World Cup it’s much more entertaining
It just seemed like a more honest game of football.
Forget the World Cup, I’ll be watching more of these uploads than that.
Wonderful stuff wonderfully enjoyable.Brian Moore Jimmy Hill as well what more could you want.Forget this modern rubbish.🐻🐒🤗👍
Venables trying to talk the ref out of booking an opponent. How times have changed

Was that Tommy Smith flying in that slide tackle in the intro?
'Showing up the naughty players' Jimmy Hill.🤣

What was that clip from the intro of 4 throwing the ball into 11's head, looks like Forest v Tottenham?
Derby v Man United on the Watney Cup the previous season
