"He jumps onto the Tiny Bronco with some kind of superhero jump" He's a Dragoon(the FF Class whose main trait is jumping) in a universe where people can jump up the side of skyscrapers.
Personally, I liked Cid because he reminded me and looks like a younger version of my grandfather. Only thing missing is a strong Alabama accent and can of Coolers in his hand. I always had him in my crew along with Red 13.
Cranky sure, but I always saw him as Super Jaded and using the attitude to surround/protect a heart of gold that finally breaks through again after he achieves his dream that was formally stolen and denied to him.
These in depth character vids are proof that good characters and writing needs to be just as important as gameplay and even more so than graphics. A lot of movies and games nowadays put all their eggs in visuals and are incapable of creating something that people will care about in 5 years, let alone 20
Cid's easily among my favorite characters in the whole franchise. I'm really glad that he got to be the party leader for a bit. Love that FMV where the cigarette falls from his mouth.
I’ve always added around ten years to the stated age of any FF character to line them up with their life experiences. Aeris and Yuffie are rare exceptions who legit seem to be the age they’re stated to be.
I still have pretty strong memories of watching advent children with my cousin. He got so freaking hyped when Cid showed up. He always had Cid and Vincent in his team.

The character cast was what made FF7, i really wish more game developpers understood that. I mean there's a reason you could hardly do any of these in depth character videos with any other games in the franchise (save for maybe FF6 and FF9).
@@delgande I mean, best FF is FF VI, but yeah X has a great cast. i'm playing VII for the first time and I feel characters like Red XIII or the optional characters are a bit underutilized, same goes for Cid. But honestly I have really enjoyed the characters quite a bit, that's one thing I love about Final Fantasy I love almost all party members in almost all games. (Well, the four that I've played)
For me, it was also a "finally" moment, since this video as well as my last few videos were constantly delayed due to things out of my control (and a few things in my control, to be fair). I'm glad somebody caught that little tidbit ;)
I always found Cloud to relatable. I think everyone at some point in his/her life lies to create a false past or origin. Even if the lie is just to themselves and is never spoken of.
I want the new Final Fantasy 7 to come out because I honestly think it could make you huge. If end up knowing half as much about the remake as you do the original, you'll be the go-to channel for everything FF7. And that sounds like an awesome thing to me.
I love all the FFVII characters all their stories and background is fleshed out in just one game. Even Caith Sith, Reeve the puppet master had a great impact in the game as well.
Cid's Theme, and its variations, will always be my favorite of all the character music. Aeris' is sheer perfection; no contest. But of all the others, Cid's needs a goddamn award!
Cid is the man. When he became main party leader, I preferred it that way -- especially that run. Plus THE MAN LIGHTS A STICK OF DYNAMITE WITH HIS SMOKE!
I'd say Cloud is very relatable to war veterans since he shows clear signs of PTSD due to him being a botched Jenova experiment, seeing his lover and best friend killed while being helpless to stop them and being exposed to multiple violent conflicts and killing multiple Shinra soldiers. Not to mention the bloody trail and mutilated bodies he's seen of the slain Shinra soldiers by Sephiroth himself.
Cid, along Red XIII, is easily one of my favorite Final Fantasy characters. In fact, my Battle.Tag and many other nicks in games is often "Cid" as a homage to this Cid and FFT's Cid(olfus). I really really hope they don't get rid of his chain-smoking habits in the remake just because of stupid censorship.
It makes sense why he's the temporary leader once you consider that he was able to just talk the crew of the Highwind into defecting. Also, he's an astronaut.
I always take Cid and Yuffie in my party their the most extrovert personalities in the group and bring different styles of humor. Their interaction is one of the things i'm looking forward to most in remake Yuffie's ribbing will drive Cid crazy but he's got a big heart and will likely play along after a while with all the crap she's been through.
5:02 Dude, we know he's got jumps. =D He is the team's Lancer/Dragoon after all. While on that point though, I always thought it was a huge missed opportunity that there isn't a Jump Command Materia. Jump is such an interesting, Strategic and distinct trademark of the series; e.g. Kain and Freeya. It's a shame it didn't make an appearance in VII outside of Cid's limits, which don't have the effect of removing him from battle for a few turns before striking. While we're at it, the Dark Knight trademark, Darkness/Darkside, would've been a fairly sick Materia as well.
I agree, I love the jump command and always thought it would be cool, but I guess it just didn't fit well with this game. FFIV and FFIX were both mystical lands, full of mystical creatures and different species, but FFVII caries a more realistic tone. Other than Red XIII, there's no dragon people or other species walking around intermingling with human culture. We are meant to believe that this planet is Earth, and the struggles the characters face are real struggles that we may face one day. Of course, there's also aliens and monsters all over, but I guess we had to fight something right?
jump in other games wasn't something I'd often use because it was unpredictable within the context of an ATB bar. Having things fill up at different rates, you could have a dragoon drop at the wrong time, or jump up (and away from damage) at the wrong time. It was a little more useful in FF tactics, but then, in tactics, calculators kinda ruled all.. :P thinking back to it, when jumping did work, it didn't do so in a way that gave significantly more damage than the other characters, so really its biggest advantage was to keep at least one character off screen during times of REALLY heavy damage or insta-kill attacks, and even then, you might be better off avoiding such situations with other means, as if you need to rely on an off screen character to save you you might be either a little too underpowered before you face such an enemy, or after you might be in a situation with a bit too much handicap (like fighting ruby weapon with 1 character)
One of my favorite characters in the game. Not only is he this games Cid, he's also like you said relatable, being a depressed alcoholic (they don't say that about him, but you know that's how it is) with his dreams and hopes shattered, but also he is a damn good fighter. Win-win all around. And he offers you the GOD DAMN TEA!
I, too, found a spear to be an odd choice of weapon first but then I thought; Cid isn't really a fighter, he's an engineer and scientist. Spears are a relatively easy and "user friendly" weapon to use thanks to their range (at least to my knowledge). Maybe he just picked it up on a whim, who knows? But that's my guess. That he doesn't really have any training or experience with weapons so he chose a spear.

i always loved and still do the cosmo canyon theme
Justin Ace I love the forgotten city theme and the world map theme after meteor has been summoned.

he played as an NPC in FF VIII

Beat me to it but glad to see another dragoon fan here. What goes up must come down! (sooner or later)
In the original FF7, I've always seen Cid as a man in his late 40's. Somebody who had past it before joining Cloud.
Yes, I also thought he was a lot older than he actually is.
Stress has that effect on people...
Yeah I could have sworn the PAL booklet said his age was 40-something
Still can't believe the bloke is only 32.
I renamed him HAWKE. Didn't like Cid.
Personally, I liked Cid because he reminded me and looks like a younger version of my grandfather. Only thing missing is a strong Alabama accent and can of Coolers in his hand.
I always had him in my crew along with Red 13.
Hey me too :)
Cloud (Magic/Phsyical), Red XIII (Magic/Healer) and Cid (Physical).
Based that was my party too
Living down here in south US, particularly Texas, almost every man older than 35 is like Cid lol
He's the oldest 32 year old I've ever seen.
stress does that
He's got some city miles
Honestly, they might say he's 32, but there is no way in the game that Cid isn't at least 50.
Yup I was 13 when I played this game! Now I can relate to Cid!!!😂
Being 32 myself, he is extremely relatable.
You know you're getting old when you have the same age as him....I always thought of him as this cranky old man.
Cid is the Cranky Kong of FF7.
Lol me to dude

Cid's Theme was one of Uematsu-san's best tracks. That snappy military march drum beat makes you wanna salute.
I wanna say Soldier but I can't because that's Shinra.

It still cracks me up watching Cid running after the Tiny Bronco and keeping up with it on foot.

The reason he jumped so high because he learned the way of the dragoon. Dragoon Jump.
