Erm, I hate to be Mr Cynical, but the REAL reason he withheld it from release temporarily for a year is because he wanted to be Christmas No 1( which used to be a VERY BIG DEAL here in the UK), which he had no chance up against the juggarnaut that was Do They Know It's Christmas. It's good to look for the positive in people, but not if it contradicts established facts. :)
@@Arty11Thanks, 'Arty'. I would say Wham should've done the same in 1984 with Last Christmas, but something tells me George wasn't quite as desperate as ol' Shaky. Andrew though... Hmm. :p
Shakin' Stevens had his first entry in the UK Singles Chart with "Hot Dog" in 1980 and has had a total of thirty-three UK Top 40 hits, including four number one singles, and during the 1980s spent more weeks in the UK Singles Chart than any other artist.
As a kid I definitely remember Shakin' Stevens but at the time I just thought he was nothing more than a cheap Elvis wannabe, however since rediscovering his music I've come to really like & respect him. I forgot he did this song. You should check out This ole House. Green door is another good one of his and he had a Christmas hit with Merry Christmas everyone which is one of my favourite x-mas songs.
After Elvis passed in 1977, A few years later they did a musical stage show of Elvis's life and had different actors/singers to play the great man at different stages of his life, Shakin Stevens was one of them who played him, After that in the 80's he became very popular in the UK.
Yes Shakin Stevens played Elvis in the West End musical Elvis the musical in 1977 and 1978. Shakin Stevens started as a Rock n Roll singer way back in 1968.
My mum was a good friend of Shaky. My uncle worked with his brother on music weekenders. Shaky started as Shakin Steven's and the Sunsets late 60's. He had 28 Top 10 Hits. The reason he moves like that is that he was like the British Elvis. When Elvis died in 1977 Shaky portrayed him in the London musical The Elvis Story wearing a gold suit. My mum saw it 3 times in a week. The funny story is my mum loved Elvis and Shaky. My dad hated him because Shaky trod on his hand accidentally but my dad shouldn't of had his hand on the stage. Great singer and a great guy. Try 'This ole House'.
As a Brit,I've always loved Shaky👍 He is known for cover hits of 50's and 60's classics like GREEN DOOR,THIS OLE HOUSE,HOT DOG,SHIRLEY,LIPSTICK,POWDER AND PAINT,MONA LISA,WHAT DO YOU WANT TO MAKE THOSE EYES AT ME FOR? and many more. He also wrote a lot of his own songs that appeared on albums or as B-sides. YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY was an original song written for him and OH JULIE was the biggest hit of his own compositions.
Shakin’ Stevens was promoted in the 70's as the "British Elvis" . One of his biggest hits was a full-on jive-rocker called *Hot Dog* Here it is: 'th-cam.com/video/GCxyC2V7NP8/w-d-xo.html
He did quite a few covers of 50s songs, along with bands like Stray Cats was part of a sort of 50's revival in the early 80s, at least here in the UK, he never released anything in the US I don;t think. His Christmas song, Merry Christmas Everyone' is one of the best. Good old shaky, still going strong.
Hey guys you really should start checking out some Leonard Cohen. One of the most iconic and respected singer/songwriters of his era. Can't go wrong with "Hallelujah", "Nevermind" or ""Everybody Knows". Amazing stuff.
Back to 1981: I was 11 or 12 years old and an enthusiastic dancer to this song at my school's summer festival. I remember standing on my toes in the exact spots like Shakin' Stevens. Of course, that was enough motivation for some girls to talk to me over a Coke afterwards 😉. Ohh, what memories are coming back now... Thx for this video. Shakin' Stevens has other good songs: 1. Oh, Julie 2. Green Door He was also a well-known artist in Germany. Kind regards from Northern Germany ♥️
Talking about rock music I guess Brits and Irish have always been three cuts above other Europeans...must have been the same language as the Americans/Canadians or maybe a really free society !.....I reciprocate your kind regards...from Central Italy !!!
Back in the eighties the South Wales Evening Post regularly featured a photo of a young boy from Swansea who was claimed to be Shakys biggest and youngest fan. He must be in his fifties by now. In 2008 Shaking Stevens played Glastonbury. A fan carried a green door to the part of the festival Shaky was playing. He didn't sing Green Door.
I remember here in Germany, he had a huge Fanbase❤ Many Girls wore Denim-Jackets, with big Shaky-Stickers on the backside😅 I love his Christmassong Merry Christmas everyone, so much🎄✨️❤ Thank you for this beautiful morning😃
Definitely a fun artist who I remember from my childhood. What I remember of him was that he was the kind of wholesome singer that could appeal to the young as well as your granny. Never heard this song before and I think it's one of his best. You can't escape him getting played in the stores or on the radio over here at Xmas with his song Merry Christmas Everyone (once you hear that seeing it's stuck on your head for a long time, it's there even just thinking of it). I'd suggest checking out his biggest hits, Green Door and This Ole House, they're both better than this song.
I would recommend to check out "Oh Julie" by him next. Speaking of hits in Britain, I think you haven't done "You to me are Everything" by The Real Thing. This was also a huge hit in the UK and other parts of Europe in the 70's. "Arms of Mary" by the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver is another one I recommend strongly.
Shakin' Stevens known as 'Shaky' in the U.K. is from Ely which is in Cardiff the capital of Wales in the U.K. so, he's Welsh. He started out as a solo singer and knew Pete Townsend of 'The Who', he later joined another Welsh group called 'The Sunsets' and toured and recorded as "Shakin' Stevens and The Sunsets" and in '69 was a support band for 'The Rolling Stones', they didn't find success in the U.K. but did much better in Europe, the Netherlands, Germany etc. In '77 he played the part of Elvis Presley on stage in 'Elvis!', while the band still toured without him. He was also in TV in the series "Oh Boy!" and "Let's Rock", in the U.K. but he didn't find real success until the '80s, after releasing a number of '50s and '60s style of records, here are some recommendations: "Hot Dog" as "Shakin' Steves and The Sunsets", "This Ole House", "Oh, Julie", "Green Door", "A Love Worth Waiting For", "It's Raining", "Shirley", "I'll Be Satisfied", "It's Late", "Merry Christmas Everyone", "Teardrops", "Breaking Up My Heart", "A Rockin' Good Way" with Bonnie Tyler. He's done loads more but these are good ones to continue with.
"This Old House", "Cry Just a Little Bit" and "Green Door" are my three favourites from Shakin' Stevens for your next reactions. Also, "Huey Lewis and the News" next song should be "Jacob's Ladder" ❤
Hi J and Amber. Really loved your reaction to Shakin Stevens real name ' Michael Barrett ' and as far I remember he's Welsh (Wales) very big 70s and 80s the next song you should listen to is ' This Ole House ' love all your comments .❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥♥️♥️♥️♥️💙💙💙💙💋💋💋💋💋💋
You HAVE to do kid creole and the coconuts - Stool Pigeon, Don’t take my Coconuts, Annie I’m Not Your Daddy…and good live versions from early eighties really shows what a phenomenal band they were.
He's been singing since 1968. And he is still singing and recording today. 56 years singing, that's a pretty amazing career. He had a single released in 2023, and had a new album released in April 2023. An incredible career.

One of a number of artists inspired by the 50s who charted in late 70s and into the 80s. Shakey was definitely the best - Elvis inspired. Thanks for uploading, guys.
His greatest song was 'A love worth waiting for' one of my favourite love songs. He also has one of the best Christmas songs of all time with 'Merry Christmas everyone'
Another artist with a 50s inspired sound that came out around the same time is Rocky Burnette with the song "Tired Of Toein' The Line". Shakin' Stevens even covered this song.
Shaky was massive in the uk in the 80s....my brother was a massive fan of his ....it was usually between him and Adam Ant for the number 1 spot in UK charts ....Great reaction
Shaky was my 1st gig at age 10 nearly 40 years ago. Green door was a massive hit, this old house and, his duet with Bonnie Tyler 'Rockin good way,' are a blast.
Shakin Stevens is still going today, he started singing way back in 1968, his latest single was released in 2023 and he had a new album released on 28th April 2023. 56 year singing career so far, and still singing, recording and touring, a pretty amazing career.
Loved "Shaky" growing up (still do), A Love Worth Waiting For, Give Me Your Heart Tonight & A Rockin' Good Way (duet with Bonnie Tyler) are my personal favourites.
People you have to be careful in what Shakin' Stevens songs you choose Jay & Amber to react to because as Shakey does a lot of covers so sadly they will play the covers and not the superior originals first such as "Green Door","This Ole House","Justine",""Marie Marie","Hot Dog!" etc. but Shakey had some sizzling originals such as "A Love Worth Waiting For","Give Me Your Heart Tonight","Oh Julie","Merry Christmas Everyone",etc.....but i will say his cover of "A Rockin' Good Way(with Bonnie Tyler)which covers the original by Brook Benton & Dinah Washington was really good...but comparing Shakey to Huey Lewis & The news was just wrong....if there was going to be a comparison it should have been rock & Roll legends such as a young Elvis(as Shakin' Stevens had played Elvis in the 1977 musical Elvis!),Eddie Cochran,Gene Vincent,Buddy Holly,Cliff Richard,Billy Fury,Johnny KIdd,etc and as Shakey had come out in 1969 3 years before Grease on Broadway and 9 years before Grease the movie the Danny Zuko comparison made no sense....But overall i am so glad the finally found the great Shakin' Stevend and they liked him.
Shakin Stevens Real Name Michael Barrett Welsh born singer, he's from my country called Wales which is part of the uk, he's from Cardiff which Cardiff is our capital city. Shakin Stevens is now 76 years old, he's had 33 uk top 40 hits including four number 1 singles, and during the 1980s spent more weeks in the uk singles chart than any other artist, although his career started in the1960s, he wasn't commercially successful til the 80s. He's Elvis fan and if you look at Elvis's dance moves in the music video to Jailhouse Rock you can kinda see where he was influenced by.
Not completely true, he did release singles and albums in the U.S. Yet only I Cry Just A Little Bit reached the lower regions, I believe #63 or #67, in the Billboard Top 100. Some of his songs were covered in the U.S. For instance Barry Manilow had a hit with Oh Julie, which was penned by Stevens himself. Also Eddy Raven had a big country hit with A Letter To You in the late 1980s.
he does one of my favourite Christmas songs Merry Christmas Everyone. His recording and performing career began in the late 1960s, although it was not until 1980 that his commercial success began. My other songs I love are Marie, Marie, This Ole House, Green Door, It's Raining, Oh Julie, Shirley, I'll be satisfied, It's Late. Cry just a little bit, A love worth waiting for, Teardrops, I might and a cover of What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?. Oh just thought of another A Little Boogie Woogie (In The Back Of My Mind)
One of the best Elvis styled singers I've run across is a guy named Steve Holy. His music is actually country-flavored but he does some great renditions of Elvis' "Trying to Get to You", Don't Let Me Down", also a fantastic version of Conway Trwitty's "Only Make Believe". Check him out.
Liked this video before I watched it because it's Shakin' Stevens 👍 Most of his hits were in the 1980s including "Oh Julie", "Cry Just a Little Bit", "Come See About Me" and "A Love Worth Waiting For". He was a big star here in Australia as well...I still have his greatest hits cassette that came out in the mid-1980s
'Shaky' as he's sometimes known had his first hit in 1980, I think it was called Hot Dog or something. He's best known for hits like You drive me crazy (or cwayeeyayeezee), Green Door, This Ole House, Oh Julie, Cry Just a Little Bit. One of his later hits was What Do You wanna make those eyes at me for'
🎵Ah, Good Old "Shaky". A perennial pop irritant in the UK, during the 1980's. A sort of Pound Shop, Elvis knock-off. Great if you like that sort of thing, though.🎶
Used to have 3 or 4 of Shaken Stevens' albums I picked up used. He basically does 50s themed songs and somewhat of a young Elvis imitator in a lot of his songs. Good stuff.
His "Shaky" album was my first ever music album that I got when I was 10 years old. Although a true 1980s artist, basically all his music was in a 1950s rock 'n' roll / rockabilly retro style.
the first poster I had on my bedroom wall growing up was Shakey. Him and Kevin Keegan (swoon with his curly hair in his youth!) Definitely a pop icon here in Blighty!
Top song that was his second number 1 here in Australia in 1981 after This Ole House had 2 more top 10s Green Door 8 in late 1981 and Oh Julie 3 in early 1982
I’m so glad that you finally had Shaky on your Channel, he was one of the UKs biggest stars in the early to mid 80s and further, can’t wait to see you cover more of Shaky,s hits, how about his duet with Bonnie Tyler, a rockin good way??

His greatest song was 'A love worth waiting for' one of my favourite love songs.
He also has one of the best Christmas songs of all time with 'Merry Christmas everyone'
Another artist with a 50s inspired sound that came out around the same time is Rocky Burnette with the song "Tired Of Toein' The Line". Shakin' Stevens even covered this song.
Both versions are excellent!!!
This ole house was one of his best hits.
Love shaky 😁, could u react to fairground attraction - perfect. That's another 80s classic 😁😁
To think he is 76 years old now, amazing….
Yep, he started out as a Rock n Roll singer way back in 1968.
When I was 9 I had the biggest crush on Shakin' Stevens 😊x
He was pretty big in Europe in the 80s, but never released songs/charted in the US.
@@Tom197613 thx
Well, we certainly didn't miss anything here in the US.
Huge in Australia too.
Looks like they are cashing in I.O.U.s to British Patreon accounts this week. Meanwhile, three years ZERO Tony Braxton or BabyFace. Oh well.
I've been a fan of Shakin Stevens since I was little and he's still fantastic even today.. Great song. Great memories❤,
I love Shaky!!!!!😁💖 Known as the British Elvis. Shaky is welsh - and still recording! Hope you react to more of his :)
he does one of my favourite Christmas songs Merry Christmas Everyone.
If you liked Shakin' Stevens. You should have a look at a group called Showaddywaddy from the 70's.
"A Love worth Waiting For" - I was never a Shaky fan but liked the sentiment and video of lost childhood sweetheart.
That's a really good one..
Hey, it's not 'high-art', but Shaky's had a pretty good career for around 50 years!!
Just don't call him Mike (his real name)
He hates that!! 🤣
Saw him back in the day in the play about Elvis in the stages of his career. With P J Proby playing the later Elvis.
For something new try , all you need is creed( 2023)and last man alive (2016) from his last 2 albums
OMG, Shakin Stevens brings back so many memories - none of them good. Mum loved him though.
"I Knew the Bride" - Nick Lowe
Had the honour of seeing him live twice in Aberdeen, UK, brilliant singer. Oh, one thing, his Knick name was Shaky
Finally some Shakin Stevens. He has some fab songs. Please react to him again. Thanks guys 🎶 🎤 🎧 ❤
Shaky was abit of fun back in the day This Ole House you'll see abit more of his shaking😂 and another hit was Green Door.😊❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
A few years ago Shakin' Stevens was voted Wales greatest living singer in a BBC survey beating such names as Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey.
