I had to laugh as Amber and Rob are talking about a second dude and don’t get there twins and they are Scottish, the only time I rarely claim my Scottish ancestry over my Danish Viking ancestry, considering we raped and pillaged the Scots for hundreds of years on Viking crusades, I consider myself a full Dane even though my mother heartily disagrees🤣. Both sides run true in my veins. I always liked the song “Irish girls are pretty”, because they are. 🤘

They sing in their native Scottish accent and are proud of it!
Their record company wanted them to sing in a more “American” style voice, but they refused to do so.
I’m glad they did, they would have lost their originality!
Though it’s interesting that their accent is slightly softened when singing, it comes out much stronger when they talk normally!
They wrote a song about it and its off their first album.
The track is called “Throw the R away”
The whole “Sunshine On Leith” album is pretty much flawless, there’s only one weak track on it (Come On Nature).
Try “Letter From America” (Band Version) and “Make My Heart Fly” (Band Version) for a slight variation from the Reid brothers.

The Proclaimers are from Scotland. When an English record producer suggested they try to lose their accents when they sing, they wrote the song "Throw the 'R' Away". They are essentially a one-hit wonder in the US, but have many hits in the UK: "Letter from America", "Sunshine on Leith", "I'm On My Way" (which was in the movie Shrek), "What Makes You Cry", "Let's Get Married" and my favorite "Don't Turn Out Like Your Mother" (if you react to that one, be sure to listen to the very end)

It’s the proclaimers it’s them! Craig and Charlie Reid twin brothers originally from Edinburgh Scotland. A great song to sing when you’ve had a couple. Being such a catchy and popular song it’s amazing that it only made number 11 UK when it first came out in 88 but went on to be number one in several countries around the world Eg Australia and New Zealand. and eventually made number three on billboard usa in 1993. It is a staple of their catalogue. And they have said it earns five times more money than all their other songs together. It must feel so great to know that you have written a song that everybody loves and jumps around to

@@patverum9051 Indeed. We once had a British technician over on an assignment. At the time we also had an American lady working in our team. When she was introduced to the British guest she was inquiring to where his accent came from. He said "Well, I am from the UK and I speak English."
"Oh, so do I" replied the American co-worker with a grin on her face. To which the British guy replied "Nah. You don't."

But that's not what people mean when they question whether someone has an accent. They mean an accent relative to their own. If an American is asking their American spouse whther someone has an accent it's implied they mean an accent that isn't vanilla American.

This song was unknown in North America. When making the movie Benny & Joon the director asked Mary Stuart Masterson to bring some music to play on set that was energetic and that would put her in the right mood for a scene where she's painting. The director liked the song so much that he added it to the film and the band became a hit on this side of the pond.

And just when I thought couldn't love this channel anymore, we get a reaction to the Proclaimers. So a quick fact file and some requests.
    1) They have strong Scottish Fife* accents which they use frequently in their songs. It really fits with the whole genre of folk rock, which is my favourite style of music. Folk rock tells a story in such a beautiful way. It has so much relatabilty and is often sung among large groups of people.
    2) The song is very catchy. So much so that it's a British institution that has become globalised. Everyone in Britain knows that song. It makes people smile and join in, which is what music should do. It's my go-to Karaoke song.
    3) Yes, it's a fun song but you're right in identifying their voices as giving a whole lot more. 500 miles is the catchy one that everyone knows. It's at least a 9 out of ten and imo they still have songs that are even better.
    I suggest you react to:
    1) Sunshine on Leith- which has become the best 'soccer' anthem for Hibernian FC
    2) Letter from America
    They are simply amazing!
And whilst we're on the subject of Folk Rock, here’s a few suggestions I'm sure you'll love:
(Female Friday) Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell
Sexuality by Billy Bragg (Has performed alongside the Proclaimers)
    Graceland by Paul Simon
Me and the Farmer by the Housemartins
I love your channel so much. Highlight of my day! Xxx

I lived for 36 years in The Dean Village, in the heart of Edinburgh, 10 minutes walk from Princes Street which is the main Street in the city but down a steep hill in a valley under a wide Bridge over a river that runs through Edinburgh. A lot of traffic runs over that bridge coz it's the main route to the North out of town but the noise disappears as soon as you are at the bottom of that hill. A real fairy tale place and as picturesque af and I couldn't believe my luck when I was able to buy a flat (apartment) there. For a while at least one of the brothers lived more or less opposite me. I couldn't tell if I was seeing one brother or both of them at different times and if I did see them together, I didn't know if they both lived there or one was visiting the other. They are completely identical. They look exactly like each other and at the same time like absolutely no-one else. I never spoke to them because we respect people's privacy in Scotland. Nothing to do with the song but hey, I haven't had many chances to boast of brushes with celebrity. 😁 For the record, this is not really my kind of music and I tried hard to dislike it but it's impossible to do.

But the thing i like most about it is that it has three full and distinctly different verses and they don't skimp on the choruses either. All just a little bit different and fresh.
