- In this video I show how I remove the old worn out lower ball joints on project Ketchup the old school way, with no press, no ball joint puller, but with just a hammer ! Like and Subscribe!

Not everyone has the tools and press to do it "professionally", so yeah, we do what we need to do the way we find to do it. Nice work pal.

@@MoparGuy1625 "Free" because you need to give them the full price to rent it. So it works if you have the money which not everyone does. Clamp to do this is around $100 to rent.

Nice and easy way to replace ball joints good old hammer 😅
One way to do this is you will still hit it in, but put a jack stand underneath the ball joint (resting on it) and hit the control arm carefully around the ball joint. It worked for me.
I've changed ball joints on about 8 different vehicles trucks and cars. Works fine 4 me. Only thing I wouldn't beat new one in like that. Put it in freezer for few hours and use a block of wood goes in easier than you think.
I spent hours trying to put it in and couldn't. So after a lot of thinking I put in the ball joint into the freezer and heated the knuckle . And voila the ball joint went in easy. With my bare hands. No hammer. Anyone has this problem but no tools try it, it works.
Works with wheel bearings as well.
I understand everyone has their own methods to ball joints but........
If you don't have a vise, then stand the arm upside down and just hammer the ball joint from the bottom.
Its better than a potential bending of your studs or rotor.
Also...I have NO IDEA why people just insert new ball joints "as-is".
Please...for the love of Jesus..toss those new ball joints in your freezer for an hour(they get slightly smaller)..THEN get the cheapest blow torch from Walmart(about $10-15) and heat up the rim of where the ball joint will be inserted(for 2-3 minutes).
Take your ice cold ball joint and insert into hot rim(No, the ball joint rubber will not melt..dont worry).
THEN tap on the top of the ball joint lightly....It will work... That's a promise!
Don't worry..you didn't buy that blow torch for just ball joints.
Use it for stubborn nuts and bolts on other projects such as:
- Camshaft Bolt
- Nuts & Bolts on your cat(not your house cat)
- Nuts and Bolts on your exhaust manifold that hasn't been turned in over a decide.
- And many others!

I gotta admit,many moons ago I did the same thing with one difference I used a piece of wood pounding the new one in. Dodge pickup and worked fine for many years. Gotta do what you gotta do.
Right! He got the job done....should have used a 2x4 to protect the new joint though, but still, not everybody can afford a press, or rent a "free" press.

Removing the balljoint the old school method, yes... but not old school for replacement. No one beats a new part in unless they don't worry about potential issues. These steering knuckles are hard to use a press on when removing a balljoint, i know cause I have a 02 accord with these on it, but i assure you a press will work just fine on em when reinstalling.
old school is sometimes the only way that works... I tried the ball joint press tool with breaker bar and 2 different impact wrenches (the C clamp of the press tool actually bent!), penetrating oil, heating with a torch nothing would budge the ball joint (yes I had already removed the spring clip). I finally just started beating on it with a hammer. It eventually took a well placed socket and hitting it very hard with a sledge hammer but I got both of them out. I'm guessing prior owner put JB Weld or actually welded them or something.
I see a lot of people saying to freeze the ball joint and heat up the spindle. In my experience putting the damn ball joint back in never been hard to put a little grease on and Tapper on in.

Great suggestion. But if you are doing a Honda CrV, avoid. You will never get it in back without damaging it. I damaged 2 before I finally went and got the tool from O'Reilly for free. ( you put a deposit and get your money back when you return the tool - 48 hours)
Living in America we can borrow the right tools for the job from local parts stores. Good improvisation young man. Personally, I've had bad luck with Moog ball joints.
Agree on the Moog ball joints. Bought controll arms and steering joints from Moog, because recommended by some TH-cam channels. Control arms went bad within a year. Torn up bushings. Not really trusting the steering joints now, that are still on....

You need a bigger hammer my friend. A 5 lb sledge will come in handy, beleive me. I am going to put the ball joints in the freezer and heat up to spindle a little (not to much) so that they might go to together a little easier. and you can put grease on them. it won't hurt them.
Ya'll gotta take the stick out ur butts.. I've done a few ball joints this way, never had an issue.. newflash, you can mess this up with a press too. Common tools + careful ingenuity > expensive tools + ego. Nice work, brother!

All these nay-sayers, but he got the job done. We can't all buy $50-$100 press kits, or rent "free" ones from AutoZone. My press kit c-clamp inner length is 6-3/4in and STILL isn't long enough to fit around my factory joint and press it out on my '96 Dakota.
I need a clamp at least 7in in inner length, but they don't seem to exist....So I'm gonna bang the old one right outta there. The new joints base is a little shorter so the clamp should fit to press the new one in. Nice to have a video seeing it done before I do it. Thanks man!!!

I know sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. But using a piece of wood to hammer new one in would have been smarter. Hopefully you didn't speed up wear or st8 up damaging it when installing. Either way good video thanks man

Next time use a sledge not a tiny hammer aka use a tool to talk to it with. When putting new one in, use a socket or block of wood socket around diameter of balljoint
Be careful if installing a ball,joint this way, I've personally seen new ball joints get broken in this manner

It's optional. You can remove it beforehand if you don't need to make it custom.

Roger Goss ya could of broke top of ball joints could us wood so impact was leveled out. Also heard putting grease in ball joints slot and freezing ball joint can help decently when putting it in. You can use a compressed air can flip it upside down and you get all gasses and make ice cold air
yes it is my car. i took caution in hammering the ball joint symmetrically. as i mentioned before i have a hydraulic press, i chose to do it this way to show that you can do it yourself using normal everyday tools. not recommended but it can be done.

I still have these badboys in. Still running strong. About to get retuned for more power....lets see if they handle the power increase and more hard driving

Take your brake rotors off when attempting this!!!! I warped a rotor when a stray sledgehammer swing (or 3) missed the balljoint

You need to put a socket on the outer edge of the ball joint! If you hit the middle it will ruin it.
My husband tried that and it cut through the rubber on the ball joint. Completely ruined the brand new ball joint
@@christyblack1700 on most ive done you can remove the rubber boot theres usually a ring that holds it remove that it comes off and put back on before you connect the control arm
@@etchosts8162 any way to replace the rubber boot without replacing the whole ball joint? Also once it was "tapped in" we are unable to move the ball joint at all.. any idea as to what I need to do for it to move? It has been greased but that's about it
@@christyblack1700 you cant move it because the housing is bent onto the stud thats why i say dont tap the center your supposed to use a ball joint press kit. You can rent them from oreilly. You can change the boot but you’d be hard pressed finding just the boot ive never bought one by itself

True..There is always a possibility of damaging the joints regardless of what way you choose to put them in. As I stated before this is just one of the many ways in which you can change your balljoint. It may not be the preferred way but it gets the job done. I've been on these balljoints for more than 8000miles of 300whp round driving. Seen at least two track events and lots of spirited driving and the balljoints are holding u like a champ!

I was fairly certain that I knew the answer, but went ahead and asked a few retired mechanics anyway. It turns out that the "old school" methodology has never involved beating the ever loving shit out of new parts. The "old school" mentality is more of a "do the right thing the right way, even if it's the hard way" methodology. If you're going to fix your own car, invest in some proper tools, it'll save you tons of time and money in the long run.

As right as you are not everyone is financially able to do that. Like for me for instance I didn't plan on doing any suspension work, let alone never have in my life before. Winter comes, ice happens car spins out and now my suspension is fucked. I learned how to do head gaskets being self taught how hard could this. Anyways moral of the story if I had the money and if I knew a head of time if being doing this type of car work yes if invest in proper tools cause my god are you right. But unfortunately not only can I not afford to get proper tools or pay to rent I don't know anyone with most tools I need either so I'm left to figuring it out the shitty. Been almost a year since I did my head gaskets and for being self taught and first time working on a car I'd say that's quite the achievement and I had money to do that then so didn't have this problem. But doing suspension the ghetto way probably isn't the best way to learn, might cause bad habits in future if ever have to do again. But like people say gotta do what you gotta do and if it works it works. There's always more efficient or safer way of doing things that this guy in the video lacks but it's worked for him. Who knows if it failed doing 70 mph down the road but let's hope not lmao. My new ball joint seems more heavy duty then the one that was on the car. So I'm not to worried about couple dents from banging it in but I ain't gonna beat the shit out of it

Ok I'm a courier and drive 80,000 a year in civics.I have hammered in ball joints.They break later everytime after about 30,000 miles.Usually on the highway doing 85mph and I've screwed up my fender and paint job.Shit.....I don't hammer them in anymore.
Mate, you smashed the back plate at the top and the bottom and it looks like you've smashed the top of the ball joint too. Maybe not damaged it but it will rust quicker!!! Ever used a bushing press to hammer a fitting in?????

i have a hydraulic press in my storage. i chose to do it this way using everyday tools that people tend to have at home. Everyone does not have access to a press but should have access to a hammer.

You know auto zone rents the ball joint press, essentially for free cause you get your money back when you return the press.
