But then later on when she uses it, such as against Gaav and then later in Try, it actually takes the more constrained shape of a large sword.
This is without a doubt one of the few anime's out there that's actually a lot better in english. Lina's voice is just flat out amazing and really suits the role, and the other voice actors of the cast are just as amazing. Xellos's voice is a bit irritating at times, the way he talks and whatnot but it grows on you and over-all suits the roll well, not to mention the anime takes place in more of a western type world which adds even more depth to the dub, one of the best anime's of all time!!!
If Lina wouldn't sound like a 35 year old woman it would be okay at best. This dub actually makes my local (pretty goofy) one look decent. Lina Inverse simply doesn't exist without Megumi Hayashibara's voice ^_^

I think this has always been my favorite spell. It might be less practical than a fireball, but if there was a zombie apocalypse, this is the spell I'd pick.
I don't the know about that. I think in case of a Zombie apocalypse i'd prefer something with a bigger range or a good area effect. And as long as we are talking about your typical walker i think we humble fireball is just way more effective. Less fun, sure, but you can just cast a couple dozen at once to make things more interesting^^

Yes. As she mentioned it is her trumph card. However Giga slave is her most powerfull spell. It is risky, but sometimes there was any other option. And i think you forgot, the reason Lina lost control over Giga Slave was Phibrizzo interuption, not because of her mistake.
Giga Slave summons LoN which caused Lina's death in Next so it's a risky one. So Ragnablade is basically most powerful spell Lina can use relatively safely for her life.
The english dub of Slayers was a good dub and to all you people who are butt hurt that its not in Japanese don't watch this video its really that simple.
It was Phibrizzo's interruption, but it can be anything, merely a loose of Lina's focus for a split second and it's all over. That's why Lina Lina used Giga Slave only about 3 times. Lina can affford to lose control over Ragnablade, 'cause nothing horrible will happen. It's really a spell safe to use considering it's awesome power. But because it's so safe to use, it's also much less powerful than Giga Slave. I mean - Gaav survived Ragnablade. He wouldn't stand a chance against Giga Slave.
Xellos was hit by Gaav just like Gaav was hit by Lina. Severed arm and part of torso. Also - I think Gaav could easily destroy Xellos with one blow but he didn't. He attacked in purpuse the way Xellos could survive because he wanted to force out of Xellos some info about Phibrizzo's plans. Xellos was able to escape simply because Phibrizzo was already there.

A pretty good dub for it's time. The problem is that it's a 90's dub. If they could redub it with modern dubbing standards as well with the same VA's it would be pretty epic.

Lina's signature move Dragon Slave draws power from basically the supreme dark lord of the universe. But it is far from her most powerful attack. She has *two* attacks that draw power from the source of all chaos, the being that accidentally spawned four different universes. One of those attacks actually summons that being and directs it's attention and desire for destruction on someone. Lina is the only one capable of casting this spell, for if anyone were to try and fail, the entire universe would be erased.
I know, anythink can cause loosing control over Giga Slave. You're right. Lina against the strongest opponent's may depend on Ragna Blade. But against dark lord is useless, because one swipe cannot destroy completly their astral bodies and Lina doesn;t have strength to make more. As you noticed Gaav wasn't killed by one swipe, because of size his astral body, which mazoku are build of.

Gaav wasn't destroyed because it wasn't a clean hit. It's not certain if he would survived a clean cut in half. Gaav forced Lina to change the direction of slash and he wasn't cut in half. And that's Ragnablade biggest weakness. On the other hand remember what Phibrizzo said after double Dragon Slave? Even he would die if it was a direct hit. So I guess a claean cut in half must destroy EVERY Mazoku, including Shabraningdo.Problem is: try to cut such an opponent in half being so close to him...

ragna blade wasnt perfected till claire read the real claire bible before she fought gaav. the one used vs kanzel is the imperfect version she used the perfected version against seigram and gaav.
No, he wasn't sliced in half. Lina just cut off his arm, shoulder and a bit of torso.Gaav injured Lina's arm and she couldn't control the blade properly. At least 70% of his body was still intact. If he could survive a clean cut in half, why bother to injure Lina's arm at all? Gaav acted all cool and he was sure he could beat Lina even when she casted Ragnablade,but notice what happened when the blade started to cut him in half.He was SCARED! I think he'd die if Lina was able finish the slash.

It was explained during first battle against Shabranigdo. You can't use a spell on a beeing, if the spell borrows power from that beeing (Dragu Slave didn't work on Shabranigdo), but you can use other spells. For them to be effective, you should use a spell borrowing power from a stronger beeing than your target (e.g. Lord of Nighmares' spell on Lord of Destruction).
