21:00 ish In my eyes the difference here is, that you let your writers and editors ramble along side you. It's a really cool format because it's like a podcast but all the participants have to communicate with different means and most importantly in different time, the writer goes first, simon comments, the editor comments and only in the next script (wich can be months and months after the fact) the writer can respond and the cycle begins anew. That's something you on't really get outside of BB, CC and DTU at all and basically a whole new genre of youtubeage. Not that my opinion on this matters, but I think all of your channels (or at least way more of them) should adopt this dialogue style, it makes your channels come alive. But yeah, I think I'm not alone saying, we don't watch it despite you rambling, we watch it because everybody rambles and we still get what it said on the tin but in an interesting way that feels more like debating a topic with friends, than listening to a teacher.
100% The rambling tangents, deep lore, and constant banter between all the roles is what makes these channels truly special. And the crossover mentions too. Don't get that on single channel creators. But Simon's covered just about everything at least once on one of the channels, so when it pops up anew on another channel, we get some fun asides.
You absolutely nailed that description about the show format! It feels like a hang with friends all having a go at each other! I have been here since the beginning and all of your videos make me feel like I’m a part of the gang, if you get all the references it’s a blast!💥 You guys/gals at BB and CC are my FAMILY NOW! 😂❤❤
the scariest thing about plagiarism is that you can never be sure. there are so many people that its highly likely that if you are a writer that at some point you will write an extremely similar thing someone else already wrote. so there is always a chance that your honest work will be seen as being plagiarized.
TomSka did a great video breaking down the different types of plagiarism as a sort of follow-up to the HBomber video (it starts with an HBomber cameo). The different types of plagiarism and how to treat them are covered quite well. Edit: I recommend it incase you are interested in the difference between accidental and deliberate plagiarism. And how both of them come about.
Plus, the rules for citation change based on the format you are writing. Each organization may have their own rules too. Add in accepted citations can change with the times, it's a minefield.
I once got called out for suggesting an extremely obscure writing idea that someone else already suggested it, on the internet. My response: "That's _my account."_ Said with some invective. I *really love* laconic responses that absolutely own people.
Is this the first time it's been used on Simon? I don't recall seeing it before, but I wouldnt' mind it on every Brain Blaze, Decoding the Unknown and Casual Criminalist. I found it distracting for a brief moment but then I got used to it, and it's hilarious to see how much of a video's total length is Simon just going off.
Another great job fact boi. Lorelei, your a certified legend, these videos are absolutely golden. Dave, the whistler universe has only benefited from your continued presence. Well done team
You should only prank people you personally have a good relationship with. A stranger, or even acquaintance, doesn't know you and therefore can't know your intentions, as such, it's perfectly understandable for that stranger to assume your intentions are hostile.
Nah, there are two kinds of people you can prank. People you know, who you know for a fact like pranks, and people you are okay with hating you and/or punching you in the face. Gold standard rule. Never prank someone unless you're prepared for physical violence, quiet hatred, or a careless shrug. They're the three other responses a prank will get other than laughter, and if you're not pranking someone you know likes pranks, you are accepting that ALL four possible reactions are okay with you. Don't go crying to the cops if you get punched, you made your bet and you took your chances.
Tom Scott worded it well. Cruelty and lasting harm are out, and the prank-ee should on some level volunteer for it. Picking up a wallet is a choice. Getting pie'd is not.
i'm just surprised that nobody has pulled the 'Merica!' card in the comments (i've read so far) about the prank guy and the toothpaste Oreos. u know the comments, 'Merica! Where a prankster gets shot every 99 seconds!' or 'Merica! Open carry firearms pundit claims it will reduce unwanted pranking!' or some such silliness. :D yes i'm an American, yes i own firearms, no i don't carry them around with me all the time. ;)
Re: on the bisexual lighting/ writing. I am pretty sure the article did mean bisexual lighting. He often used pink and blue lighting in his videos. Which are two colours of the bisexual flag and when placed with pink on one side and blue on the other gives an interesting contrast.
If you overlap them just right you even get purple stripe down the middle. Man, the irony of a guy who I know in my bones disdains bisexuals constantly using our lighting is top tier.
Man, the script must have been written a while back considering the recent revelation that James Somerton in fact did not made an "attempt", was in fact using two alt accounts the entire time to try and defend his main twitter while also hrny posting certain sexy movie scenes and oh yeah...the NSFW photos of what everyone thought was himself because it seemed that way but NO THEY WERE PHOTOS STOLEN FROM GRINDR. The man can't stop!
@@blinddave88 At his current rate, Somerton's been popping up every two months trying to become famous again (he showed his face on TikTok trying to add his useless 2 cents on the man v. bear discourse), so prepare for a sequel.
@@blinddave88 There's honestly so much that happened and has been divulged/exposed in the span of like 6 months I bet Somerton could get his own Blaze episode 😂 You didn't even get into the alleged fraud with the film studio or the $8k cameras!!
Bonus update to the Somerton situation, he did another disastrous apology, faked actually ending himself, then proceeded to try to make stuff under alt accounts. Yes really.
I think my favorite part of the second apology was where he claimed to have memory issues from a childhood head injury that meant he couldn't recognize when something in one of his scripts had been copy-pasted. Keep in mind, this includes such excerpts as the lived experience of an Asian-American trans person talking about how Mulan affected them. He is a cis white Canadian man.
I'll be very honest, while I knew what Sommerton's content had been about regarding queer media, phrasing it as "bisexual lighting" also confused the hell out of me 😂
Love the tangent counter. It'd be cool to have a script to tangent ratio total at the end. Maybe a high score graphic and leader board for the highest ratio 🤣
@@EveryFairyDiesyou can create a fraction with the tangent timer amount at the end of the video divided by the full length of the video and that gives the ratio of tangent to video. Or have the length of the video minus tangents at the bottom of the fraction to show the ratio of tangent to actual scripted content. A third way is to actually divide these fractions and then multiply the result by 100 to get the percentage of tangent to video or script.
@@Alexa-eg9wy My brain just went "math math mathity math math" while reading that 🤣🤣 But thank you! Next time I use the timer, I shall make the attempt. Though be warned, the answer may be "I DON'T FUCKING KNOW, I FAILED MATH IN HIGH SCHOOL! YOU WORK IT OUT! I'M ALREADY YOUR GOOGLE BITCH, I REFUSE TO BE YOUR MATH BITCH TOO!" -or words to that effect.
I’m a tow truck driver in Texas, been listening to his channels for a few years on my 12+ hour shifts. Love them all. This, somehow, was my first time actually watching the video in my hotel room and the cut-aways and such make these even more fun. Love the fact that he puts out such consistently entertaining and informative at such a high rate. It’s much appreciated 🫡
I'm 90% sure Simon has said in a previous Blaze ep that he doesn't gargle after brushing so he consumes a bit of toothpaste each time, so uh... no, no he probably doesn't 😂
In Europe they dint pit Florida in their toothpaste. They can eat it. Inly kn America is yet another item filled with shit that will kill you before or near retirement age.
When the tangent timer gets up there, i'd love to see a box with the world record time so we have something extra to root for. Be like watching the Olympics.
I'm a caregiver and the person I care for has a fairly severe metal disability and doesn't talk often. We used to sit down as a family for dinner and chat while we were eating. This is something I greatly miss and Simon's tangents simulate that experience quite nicely. We may tease you about them (among other things lol) but the tangents are one of the main reasons we watch and we enjoy and appreciate them.
Danny moved on to farming the mushrooms that the rest of the writers live on. The farm is near the leaky pipe that often smells "funny", especially after Simon gets a meal at somewhere dodgy.
i stated cackling the instant i saw the "Tangent Timer" XD i hope it makes a return as much as possible in the future. i do love Simon's tangents, fwiw, i sincerely find them endearing
I was absolutely on the very edge of my seat to see if we could reach 50% tangent on this one. Glorious as ever factboi may your tangents entertain and enlighten us years to come
Man, you only covered like half of the Somerton saga. I'm not surprised you don't have the developments from last week, but back at the end of February he posted a second apology that was even worse received, where he continued to lie about the extent and nature of his plagiarism, spent most of the time swearing he was absolutely going to make the short films he crowdfunded $65k for (all while making it abundantly clear he doesn’t actually understand film production because he seems to think that a year of pre-production is too long), and then he posted a (surprise surprise) fraudulent suicide note.
Nevermind the supposed alt account and nudes right after the fake note and throwing Nick under the bus several times after saying he would never several times
When I was in college, exactly 100 years ago, I majored in English, with a minor in Creative Writing. So, as you can imagine, I wrote quite a few papers. The papers written by college students are often very similar to each other. You might be assigned to write a narrative paper, or an argumentative essay. A lot of people are taught to form opening paragraphs the same way, starting with a thesis statement, and following a pre-established pattern. Then, of course, a lot of topics will be assigned, or chosen, that you must write about. Most people, finding certain subjects more interesting, will choose the same subject frequently. So, it shouldn't come as a huge shock when people with a lot of the same backgrounds, and with a similar level of education write something that sounds a lot like a paper another student has written. I've done a lot of writing in my life, but I have NEVER knowingly plagiarized anything. But, I was accused of it once in a class. I had written on a popular subject and, I'll admit, my opening paragraph was kind of generic, but it honestly was my own, as mediocre as it was. Apparently, someone else had the similar ideas on the subject because our papers (at least in the first paragraphs) sounded extremely close. If I were going to copy someone's paper and try to make it look like my own, I would changed it more than that. Anyway, we both got an F on that paper and were lucky we weren't kicked out of the class. That did teach me a lesson though; when writing an assignment like that, try to come up with something really original to begin your paper.
Simon, i watch your channels because of your ramblings, your excellent script writers and brilliant editing. You and your ways are what makes your channels, there are millions of other channels to watch but they don't have you on them. Keep doing what you are doing and we will keep watching.
Yes, it's funny because me and some other people on hbomberguy's subreddit have talked about Simon's videos and how he seems to be one of the few ethical content mills (though we wouldn't mind some actual bibliographies, Simon. Especially on CasCrim, where some of the writers obviously do some great research.)
Yeah, the triangle lady made Simon even stand out more with how much credit he gives to his team (instead of pretending to do it all on your own), the amount of fun everyone seems to have with each other (instead of being very toxic) and checking for plagiarism (attacking legal eagle whilst copy-pasting their own scripts for years... great idea).
Lorelei seriously you are one if my favorite editors on this entire platform. Its basically you and Jeff and Ron from UNHhhh. There are other good ones but idk their names.
I fucking love the absolutely random songs or comedians he throws in there that always resonate with me - 1st Daniel’s stand-up bit about defending others by being outraged and Diggy Diggy hole in the same video? FUCK YEAH!
I watch/listen to a number of Simon's shows.... sometimes when it comes to DTU or CC i listen to it with my eyes closed but when it comes to episodes/shows like this especially those edited by Lorelei i love to watch because so much humour and personality is injected and added to the shows because of Lorelei's M agic touch!
Olds like me would probably drop off. I don't like getting into any kind of new platform unless I have to. I just about threw a toddler tantrum recently when I had to start a Venmo account because a thing I needed to pay for didn't take Paypal. 😆
Love the tangent timer and sudden Wind Rose "diggy hole" was superb! Thanks to facts boy and not locked into the basement team for their goos meme game.
Mad respect Simon, for giving Dave the opportunity to explain the situation and not just canceling the whole cooperation. Imagine a Whistlerverse without Dave...
To be fair, Dave wouldn't be able to tell, even if he saw (pun intended) brewis' video with that little reference to Natalies impact on youtube aesthetics. What blows my mind time after time is how Simon is such a prolific youtuber but seems to be clueless on so many injokes of the ecosystem. Then again, his willful ignorance towards things that don't really matter too much is part of his charm.
@@EveryFairyDiesThat's one way of showing due dilligence, I s'pose. And yeah, either Google ain't what it used to be or we've gotten more specific with our needs. Probably both.

Usually I just listen Simon while I work but i decided to actually watch this one…. It has legit sidebars with their own camera and a tangent timer!!! 🤣
As a writer, I know exactly what you mean. In 9th grade I wrote an educational analysis on Sailing in a story method genre. I accidentally wrote a 1500 word essay that was almost word for word the same as a book my English teacher owned. I had never seen the book, nor knew of its existence, yet still, I was done for plagiarism and banned from all of my creative writing classes. Basically, that one incident fucked my entire life as I had only ever wanted to be a writer, starting at the age of four. It didn't have to ruin me, but my teacher hated me and had me reported to the writers guild or whatever its called.

Bisexual lighting was 'invented' (or rather established as a cultural phenomena) by Natalie Wynn aka ContraPoints. She does incredibly elaborate videos on culture, sociology and politics and has been a legend in her own right, influencing many of todays' video assayists in terms of style and tone. If you are into that kind of format and don't mind surrealism and spicy queerness, check her out. Her upload schedule has settled at 1 or 2 videos per year, but the quality is mind blowing. She has also been credited as a major influence for many who came back from the ugly pits of 2016s alt-right/anti-SJW edginess cesspool. Very much the queen of breadtube (though she might have to share the throne with Philosophy tube, at this point).
@@obsy5740 Soooo... you made me peek into the tea-filled rabbit hole! Whenever people I respect have issues with one another, I like to make sure the degree of underlying awfulness is not 'I really don't want to watch that person ever again'-bad. So please correct me if I'm getting this wrong: Looks complicated from here but feels like some interpersonal drama, youtuberEgo (let's be real: no fully sane person does this job) and less than optimal/passive aggressive communication styles, yes? Not trying to downplay anything or even pick sides - humans are messy creatures and artsy people are even more of a pain in the butt. Not even just to the people around them but mostly for themselves in the long run. As someone who has dealt with substance abuse I can relate to that layer as well. But there's no awfulness to the degree of... let's say Onision? Or Sommerton even, with the lies about going to hospital and all that. As said: I appreciate a correction if there's really awful stuff buried there. When I like creators as much as I like those two, I sometimes rather avoid going down too deep. I want to be able to still enjoy their stuff and sometimes that's hard when uglier parts of their personalities shine through on social media or rumors create a bit of a bad aftertaste. And personalities with this much fire to them (both!) will always come with nasty streaks and personal issues. Since we can't know what's true as outside observers... I'll just try to keep my distance from the details on that one, as long as there were no puppies killed in the process.
@@Kenghym Personally, I don't think the drama is that big of a deal, or at least nothing that would stop me from enjoying & watching both creators, it's just funny because for me and a lot of the people I know who watch both creators, we all kinda thought the same thing and when natalie vaguely confirmed it, we all were like OOOO

There's loads of those plagiarism detection programs. My husband had many run-ins with them when he was studying for his architecture degree. One entire subject was basically about design analysis and required him to compare different styles of architecture. Part of the whole thing was quoting things the original designer had said about their projects. This sent the plagiarism programs into overdrive. His professor understood why and wasn't concerned but holy crap was it weird. Also recall a friend who got a minor kick in the pants for plagiarism when they quoted their own research paper from some years earlier. It eventually blew over, thankfully.

I think I wrote this one just after Christmas. Will go back and check :-)

@@blinddave88 There's honestly so much that happened and has been divulged/exposed in the span of like 6 months I bet Somerton could get his own Blaze episode 😂 You didn't even get into the alleged fraud with the film studio or the $8k cameras!!
He couldn't even take his own nudes???? He had to steal those too??
Bonus update to the Somerton situation, he did another disastrous apology, faked actually ending himself, then proceeded to try to make stuff under alt accounts. Yes really.
He's still going at it? Christ, Somerton, have some self respect.
He literally posted his assh*le and balls on one of his alt accounts THE SAME DAY EVERYONE THOUGHT HE'D OFFED HIMSELF.

@@EveryFairyDiesyou can create a fraction with the tangent timer amount at the end of the video divided by the full length of the video and that gives the ratio of tangent to video.
I plagiarize recipes

Especially on CasCrim, where some of the writers obviously do some great research.)
Yeah, the triangle lady made Simon even stand out more with how much credit he gives to his team (instead of pretending to do it all on your own), the amount of fun everyone seems to have with each other (instead of being very toxic) and checking for plagiarism (attacking legal eagle whilst copy-pasting their own scripts for years... great idea).

Looks complicated from here but feels like some interpersonal drama, youtuberEgo (let's be real: no fully sane person does this job) and less than optimal/passive aggressive communication styles, yes?

My gawd. It's good to be back. I'm sorry Simon, but I haven't watched your videos for the last six months. My FYP had become a Simon Whistler feed because you own all the channels around my interest areas. And i needed to go find other stuff for a while. But now the walkabout is over, and I'm back for the magnificent beard and even better content.
5:47 - The graphic that says "When Simon is eventually cancelled." ... WHEN, not if. WHEN. Lorelai you savage.
I mean, let's be real, it's an inevitability. The question is, which of us in the basement will be the last one standing?!
When I saw the timer, I knew the tangent was going to be strong with this one…
I got an email from TripAdvisor saying that a message I had left was removed for obscenity. I reread the message and realized I had mentioned the town of Jizzak in Uzbekistan. So the obscenity was the first three letters. Artificial intelligence my foot!
...I like how people now pretend AI has always been here rather then "if contains".
Wind rose reference and the tangent timer? Absolutely love it (timer on every ep would be so nice, no idea how much extra work it technically is though). Also yea, especially if it was fluoride toothpaste you can end up even having convulsions if you eat enough. And if a homeless man gets a package of cookies, I'd wager he's going to eat more of them than the average person walking around. Nausia, diarrhea, vomiting, convulsions, intestinal blockages and general stomach pain/upset are some of the things that can happen. Swallowing toothpaste is generally a bad idea, let alone more than a spoon full.
