    Great job Jon! Once I get over how easy it is to tape and fold foan boards like Depron etc, I will definitely be into this style of foam cutting. It's so simple and logical. A very nice set-up.

    Thank you for posting this video. Long time ago, I gave up of cutting foam by bow because of uneven speed, and due to problem with tapered wings - it requires two persons, and steady pace of the cutting speed. Your desing requires single person... actually, it does it by itself, just monitoring the progress.

    Very clever system with the pulleys. I guess it makes for much much consistent results. I always thought this was done by hand.

    Great foam cutting set up! The Finch's in Georgia intend to build one; thanks for the video.

    I like this method for shaping the foam, it serves to cut/shape
    all while sealing up the edge. I'm really getting the urge to get
    going on my build but I need to do some more research to
    make sure of the items I'll need? thanks for sharing your expertise......

    Lowes carries 25 psi extruded polystyrene foam that works great for these kind of wings. Check in the yellow pages for insulation companies if your Lowes doesn't carry it.

    Nice work, answered a lot of my questions. Spent a rainy sunday watching the whole series :) Any chance of a video explaining how a bladder works in the fuse mold?

    Hi Jon... First of all a lot of compliments for your work!!! I've seen the entire construction of the plane and it's amazing!!! Can i ask you which airfoil had you used for your plane? I'd like to built something like yours but it's my first attempt with this class of planes and i don't know the main characteristics! thank you very much for your help!!!

    you can but it is usually coiled and leaves ripples in the wing as you cant streighten the wire fully

    Dear ser what is the thickness of the aluminum template of the foil?

  • @jfinch84
    @jfinch84  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know. Everyone I know uses either stainless or inconel wire.

    ciao Jon, I have apreciated your home made equipment. Three points are not clear to me.
    Those very soft wires which pull the bow are the same electrical wires connected to the nichrome ?
    What is the material you use for an easy cutting of the templates.
    What is the diameter of the nichrome wire .
    thanks in advance

    Hello Jon. First off... Great Videos. They help me a lot. May I ask if it would be possible to get a copy of your plans for a DLG from you? Wings, Body etc?
    Greetings from Switzerland

    You should use nichrome. i use it and it hasn't caused any problems in years of use

  • @beenselock

    nichrone wire works great

  • @tzachus

    And a anther question is, what is the diameter of the hot wire?

  • @gricka31
    @gricka31 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the foam cutter, could nichrome wire (used in toasters) be used instead, as the power supply could probably be made for less $, and may be safer?
    Thanks

    So how would I hotwire cut an elliptical wing for a DLG?

    Looks like fun. However, I can't find any blue foam around here. Any suggestions?

  • @mpikas

    Everyone demonstrating a gravity hot wire foam cutter shows cutting the left hand wing (airfoil facing up, narrower tip to the left), how do you cut the RH one? None of these setups have an arm that will pivot both ways, the templates that you're using will only work right side up, the only thing I can guess is that you swap templates side to side and cross the pull/power wires (run the LH one to the 100% pulley and the RH one to the whatever percent you need for the other side)?
    You also said that the ratio is that of the lengths of the power/pull wires, is that correct? It seems like if you used that then both would reach the edge of the table at the same time, not the trailing edge.

      @jfinch84  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Pikas yes swap templates and cross pull strings/wires. It's the ratio of wing chord lengths. If you start the pull against the core the trailing edge will exit at both ends at the same time.

    if i download cessna naca 2412 airfoil to net, how i print this right scale ? and how print left top and right top airfoil because have different size ? and how scale right size ? i have A4/letter size normal laser printer. or if wing have 3 different piece ? on to roof piece, left and right wing and angle up and left top and right top, have all wings same naca 2412 profile ???? sorry my english but no understand good english.

      +andy I use the blue Dow square edge (or sometimes the tongue and groove) foam from Lowes in the USA. I like it better than the Owens Corning (Pink) foam at Home Depot. The Dow foam at Lowes is 25 psi while the pink foam at Home Depot is 15 psi (at least here in Utah). For even stiffer and more dent resistant wings I use Dow 40 psi foam from a local insulation supply store (all they sell is insulation).

    hello, I bought a adjustable power supply to cut the cores of foam.
    The power supply has the following characteristics 0 - 30V, 0 - 5amps, switch source to an arc with chrome nickel 0.05mm (24 gauge), but the eat it is enough.

    The problem is wire or the power source?
    thanks

    OMG ! You have that wire moving so slow through the foam.Zzzzzz And the bow's ass way up in the air. Seriously? Oh man, ... but you do get a nice cut and the TE is very thin and not burnt so I guess I could learn something here. Thank you.
