Cutting Foam Cores for Quickie Model Airplanes

  • I demonstrate how I use the FeatherCut system (from www.cstsales.com) to cut 47.75" long foam wing cores for Quickie 500 model planes. I show the foam as I get it in 48" x 24" x 2" sheets and how I trim it down to size. Then I show how the FeatherCut is used in some detail. Some of my techniques are useful to those cutting cores by hand and for those setting up home made gravity cutting systems.

    Well done, I enjoyed your demonstration, nice work with the pulley config, that works a treat, I've just started cutting foam cores and may make one similar soon.

    Enjoyed this video. Looks like a great setup, but too expensive for me.

    Many of the URLs in the description host malware or aren't there. Neither of the URLs mentioned at the end of the video exist any more either.

    Hello, nice videos.
    Can you help me?
    What wire diameter in "mm" you use, and characteristics power supply.
    Many thanks

    Nice video, thanks for sharing. What is the size of the cutting wire and Amperage?

      Bogumil Jakubowski I use .018" stainless steel fishing line leader and I use an A/C power source. I don't have a current meter on it, but I will check and get back to you. The power source has a 24 volt (maybe 12 volt) transformer and the dimmer is about half way up.

    What is the gauge of that wire, and is that steel wire?

    Nice video! How do you align a tapered wing? TE always parallel to the table?

    • @DonStegall
      @DonStegall  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I have another FeatherCut that I use for tapered wings. This one stays set up for constant chord wings. I will be doing videos on how to set up a FeatherCut and how to cut tapered and double taper wings over the next 2-4 weeks. Send me an email and I will let you know when the videos are ready. The jigging of the rollers and pull wires is the key. And using a "stop" piece to hold the wing in a fixed location. Please subscribe to RCPylon.TV as it will be on there first.

    IF YOU WERE TO STAND YOUR FOAM BLANK UP, ON EDGE, WITHE THE LEADING EDGE DOWN TOWARD THE TABLE, AND TRAILING EDGE UP, TOWARD THE CEILING), AND CUT MOSTLY IN THE VERTICAL "UP" DIRECTION", YOU MIGHT GET SUBSTANTIALLY CLEANER, FASTER CUTS, (BECAUSE THE WIRE WOULD BE CUTTING INTO PREHEATED FOAM, (FOAM HEATED PRIOR TO THE PASSING OF THE WIRE,.. USING THE ADVANTAGE OF THE "RISING HEAT"...

      I've cut well over 500 cores .. probably well over a 1000 .. no one does it the way you suggest ., how many have you cut the way you suggest? .. my cuts are effectively perfect .. but hard to tell if you're serious or not .. there's this little thing know as kerf and what you suggest would likely be nothing more than a disaster

      I buy consistent good foam from a local supplier. I learned the hard way not to transport it in the bed of a truck when it's raining, even with plastic over it. The foam gets wet and stays wet. I take my truck and trailer to pick up nice stacks of 9 of 48" x 24" x 2" pieces of nice foam. Or a smaller quantity of thicker foam. You don't get the quality of cores I cut, uuses, and sale otherwise.
