  • The Right Opionion: The Tea Spilling Saga - How Jeffree Star Became More Important Than Jake Paul | TRO
    Intro:
Careers were launched, reputations were established, and people were, once again, falling head over heels for drama that seemed so inconsequential in many of our lives.
Summer 18 was around the corner, many were anticipating the shenanigans that all of these characters would be caught up in. Or at least we thought they were.
Because, as the holidays dawned, there was a distinct lack of interest.
In fact, fellow TH-camr Nerd City released a video in which he documented all of Jake Paul’s antics over the summer, antics that were arguably much worse than anything originally documented in 2017, and yet, if it hadn’t been for some very ruthless marketing, in spite of its excellency, it probably wouldn’t have even reached its current view count. 700,000, not bad, but hardly the peaks of the drama over the previous year.
So where had all the views gone?
    I think it’s time for a story.
I think we’ve had enough of those sorts of storytimes.
Anyhow, I have a Twitter, and like most people with a Twitter, I follow people. When people follow me I typically check out their account to see what sort of individuals I’m appealing to, and in some instances they may be TH-camrs, for whom I’ll check out their channel and see if their Twitter’s worth keeping up with, and at some point over the summer a person by the name of TeaSpill followed me. I checked out their channel, around fifteen thousand subscribers, not a bad amount going on. So I thought, “You know what, I’ll follow them back, see what happens with their channel”.
They also had their subscriptions public and because I have a bit of a vanity project going on, I often check my most popular subscribers, see whose attention I have, and I noticed they were subscribed to me but fairly low down in the pecking order. However, with every passing week I noticed them climbing, gradually and then rapidly ascending, and I thought to myself “What on earth is going on”, this channel was going from 15k, to 30k, to 60k, to 150k.
So this is when I found about all these people, Laura Lee, Manny Mua, Jeffree Star, NikkieTutorials, so many more, and if we were going by their thumbnails and titles, this was a non stop festival just pure drama, and to be honest, they looked like people who loved a bit of spice. So what of this new rise to the top for such individuals?
Well they’re members of what is known as the “Beauty Community”, now when you’re as good looking as me, you don’t really need any makeup to stay beautiful, however, as implied, these are a set of creators who are focused on the testing of commercial beauty projects. But this isn’t any old beauty community, we’re not talking about Zoella here, as interesting as that is. No, we’re talking about the community that has birthed the tea spilling phrase, and embodied a culture like no other. And you’ll soon see what I mean.
This sort of content seems to have been performing fairly successfully for a while, the most prominent creator in this community is Jeffree Star, who has a fairly hefty ten million subscribers. The content has definitely diversified in the last few months, but I think that’s okay for someone like Star, whose definitely playing off his somewhat buoyant personality.
With the rise of channels like TeaSpill and other content creators reporting on what’s going on, it seems there must be a lot to discuss.
As said, there are a load of other prominent figures in this community, and really the question that I want to answer at the end of all this is why? Why did people start caring about the drama of a community that had been functioning fairly competently for years prior, and why should people care, or should people care?
These are all questions that many of us here will seek to decipher today, because honestly, I’m just as confused as the rest of you.

Okay. I get that you can recognize the hypocrisy of the makeup youtubers, but you didnt even explain why the makeup drama was more important than the jake paul. You say that it occurs, and that it is because the views are down, but why are the views down? What spurs an audience to lose interest? I'm sad that you didnt even really say anything unique or exciting in this video. It felt like I just sat through 25 minutes of fluff that amounted to nothing.

"Beatiful people" youtubers get to have everything easy and mostly end up being full of themselves. Then when something goes wrong and they have to face their own dishonesty "it's a tough situation", marked by an apology, a blanket statement of somekind and a request to us, the viewers, that we should somehow "relate" to their situation and "feel bad for them". They are the products of their own industry, not the ones shaping it.

i think a lot of the drama has to do with the fact that they're trying to sell makeup to their audiences. Makeup isn't cheap, especially when it's one of their collaborations with a brand. Many youtubers avoid disclosing sponsorships and try to sell their audience something that's shit, and people will get mad when their money is wasted because of a lie. I used to think that most of the drama was on the commentary community (well, their Twitter accounts included) but then I started watching that people that I thought wouldn't cause any drama were the ones with the most of it (not that it's a bad thing necessary but beauty guru's drama is kinda stupid). In the end commentary community is kinda more open to drama and they don't hide it that much until everyone finds out.

I think your audience is likely to be at least familiar with the beauty drama on a surface level. It was so pervasive that even those who don't give a shit about Beauty TH-cam couldn't really avoid it entirely. I knew who a couple of those people were in name only and others I had never even heard of; Jeffree is the only one I was at all familiar with as a person but I'm old, I used to follow him on MySpace back in the day. By the time the drama peaked, I knew who all of them were despite having never sought out any of the "tea" myself. This is actually the first video on the topic I've watched, and it's only because I enjoy YOUR content. That being said, I did quite like this video as it presented a more objective perspective; oddly a video about drama that itself doesn't stir up more. That's not easy to pull off. I see you're planning to speak about Shane Dawson at some point, and as I'm a longtime fan of his I am definitely stoked for that one even if your opinion of him isn't as favorable as mine. Your views seem to run quite parallel to my own, but not always. I don't consider that a negative.

A big reason why Beauty community drama is bigger than youtube drama like the Pauls is that where the Pauls are purely on youtube in a video format. We don't interact with anything related to them directly and are not directly affected by their drama. Also the only thing really getting affected is their own brand and the audience who chose to watch them. Beauty community goes beyond just youtube as most of the biggest beauty youtubers own their own makeup brands or work with big makeup bands. They are directly influencing the products we as makeup consumers use every day in both good and bad. They are held to a much higher standard because they have more power and responsibility towards their audience and the makeup business. We buy makeup based on their reviews or we buy products made by them so there is a much bigger sense of trust that a certain product is worth our money because makeup is expensive and some can even do harm on the consumers. The pauls are just content that you watch where beauty youtubers actually directly affect their viewers every day lives.

Only one week after I find and subscribe to your channel and you make a video about MY community! A very well thought out and executed video too. Most people who talk about or make videos about the beauty-drama community (of which I consider myself more a part of than just the “beauty community”) talk about how the drama channels are “bullies” and “stir the pot just to get views” yada yada yada. But it’s more than that. It’s, like you said, holding these so called “gurus” accountable for the shady shit they do. It mainly started with the drama channels finding out that A LOT of these gurus were doing sponsored content and not disclosing it. And that was a BIG DEAL. And then it just pretty much went on from there. BUT I just want to add, you would be HARD PRESSED to find a beauty channel that doesn’t disclose a sponsorship anymore and that is BECAUSE of the beauty-drama community. Otherwise, they’d still be out there ILLEGALLY making their commercials w/o disclosing and the young kids watching wouldn’t be the wiser. So some good has come out of it. Great video 👍🏼

but you are conveniently leaving out that drama channels have an agenda too. Thye put down gurus and people they personally don't like. I mean, John Kuckian was busted fabricating receipts. They do blow stuff out of proportions or push conspiracies that have been proved false. Now all drama, channels are Jeffree Star personal propaganda channels because they are biased to favor him. Yes, some drama channels are bullies and hypocrites. You can't trust drama channels to be fully accurate because they are not fucking detectives or lawyers, they are just people with Google. What thye say must be taken with a grain of salt.

Everyone (almost everyone, it seems he still has a little cult that continues to believe his crap) knows what a vile, disgusting, sociopath he is. When I say “drama community” I mean the channels I watch. Ones that always have proof of what they say and yes, there ARE some that aren’t as ethical or are down right malicious, but I think most of us in the drama community know who they are and avoid them at all costs.

I follow many genres of youtubers and see a lot of drama, so while none of this is new to me, this was an excellent video.
What I find interesting and why I think youtubers themselves should purposefully keep abreast of the drama from other genres (even if they have nothing initially in common) is how similar the dramas are. Almost cyclically it seems one genre will be hit by one type of drama, and then later another will be effected by something similar. Now, if you were a smart youtuber, you could use the examples made by members of one genre as a way to better safeguard yourself in a different genre from inevitably being hit by the same kind of drama, but it seems like none of them do. One of the biggest types of drama in the beauty community revolves around the ethics of paid reviews, sponsorships, discount codes and referral commissions and the disclosure of such things. A beauty community commentator will never run out of tea.

New to this channel (now subbed), and new to this kind of analysis of the mechanics of TH-cam drama. Very fascinating, insightful video. I think you're right up my alley. It's interesting to think about the various dramas that surround TH-camrs who rise and fall - sometimes they do things that should see them fall into oblivion and we see the opposite effect, and vice versa. A good analysis of what occurs behind the scenes. I like to see how and why people relate to each other, and that includes TH-camrs, who are kind of the new celebrities of the Western world (and hey, if it slows paparazzi from stalking film actors to any extent, that's probably a good thing. Who knows.) Thanks for this, love your work.

The makeup industry is huge! As far as watching them, it's not my cup of tea, but I do enjoy watching Jeffrey Star from time to time, but not for his beautiful face (that looks good without any of the glitz and glam), but for his personality and his tattoos! Still, to each his or her own. When it comes down to what each individual likes, I guess it's there own preference. I happen to like people who have convictions and own up to their own mistakes without faking the tears. We do know the difference.

Firstly I’m curious, who do you consider your audience? Is the “right” meant to be correct or right-wing? Because honestly I don’t get a sway from you either way and that’s a good thing. I’m a leftist and any difference in opinion I’ve had with a thought of yours is just that. I still watch!
Also I was hooked into the drama by the tea channels you mentioned! I don’t even care about this stuff and actually stopped midway thru the story because of the long-winded nature of them. It was definitely a good check on moral standards though.

Honestly in the beauty community, I love Bailey Sarian because she is amazing, talented and funny without all the drama! Plus she does murder mystery make up Mondays 🥰❤️ love true crime and she is so talented with her make up!!! Same with Stephanie Harwlore 💕 love her content and they definitely need more love!

Only Jesus can give true happiness. Everyone including yourself can fail. We're all human beings not perfect. Its not what you did. But what Jesus done for you on the cross. Paid with his own blood its a permanent forgiveness of sins.. He even numbers the very hairs on your head. That's how much he loves you.

For the record, "Spilling the tea" comes from the drag community in bars and clubs for a really long time like a decade or more, not originating from the beauty community that just brought it to the mainstream. The true way of spelling it is "Spilling the T" as in "Spilling the TRUTH" and the use is kinda self explaining.

The term “tea” originated in the LGBT+ and drag community. It’s been around for a long time but recently found mainstream popularity due in part to the popularity of Rupaul’s Drag Race. I’m only 9 min in so if you address this later in the vid, my bad!

    • @bloodydove5718

KIiiinddda; its a term black women came up with; the LGBTQ+ community has a history of borrowing and popularizing things black women originate

    • @AliS-ml7nd
      @AliS-ml7nd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@bloodydove5718 if we're gonna very picky, it was first Black LGBT+ people, mainly women. This was in Ballroom culture primarily, then this quickly extended to black women. The only group really that weren't LGBT but involved in Ballroom culture. And eventually when White Gays stopped being so racist and appreciated some of ballroom culture, it spread throughout the Gay community. this was partly due to Madonna the White Gay Goddess making the cultuo masterpiece "vogue". This was the same time New School Vogueing started to be popularised, and drag started to be viewed within exclusive binaries where as before drag was far more of a gender fuck.
