Toyota Yaris 2021 review

  • Have you ever heard the saying you can’t get something for nothing? It could have been written about this all-new, fourth-generation Yaris.
It’s bigger, far safer and more feature-filled than the ageing city car it replaces. It introduces hybrid powertrains for the first time, debuts safety systems never before seen in a city car, and rolls-out the long-awaited cabin technology that the last Yaris sorely missed.
All of which is good news? The not so good news? You will be paying handsomely for all those changes. Yes, the new Yaris marks the end of the sub-$20k Toyota. And it ends it by some margin.
So does the value proposition still stack up? Or are you better off taking the never-smaller step up to the bigger Corolla. Join us as we find out.

I just bought the new Corolla ZR Hybrid Hatch, I did have a Yaris for a long time and loved it, then had a qashqai and when it was time to upgrade went back to a Toyota, my Yaris never let me down and I’m hoping the Corolla is the same, Definitely will be putting my daughters in a Yaris for their first cars!

We have a 2017 Rio AO Edition and its an amazing car with a lacklustre power train. It does everything you need a car to do in town. At least this Yaris sounds good when it revs. Seems to rev freely as well.

I actually think its worth it, is the price a little high yes, but it has a lot of technology that a lot of cars in its class don't even have, plus there is even a GR version, the question is would you get a base or mildly equipped corolla or a fully loaded Yaris

Interesting. The old Yaris was really cheap by US standards. Now it's priced closer to most city cars in the US; our base Yaris with manual gearbox (actually a Mazda2) starts at AUD$21,500. But that's also the sedan. Base hatch (no manual; auto only, also a Mazda2) is over $24,000. This is not expensive by any stretch. Especially compared to the base Corolla hatch which starts at AUD$28,100 (manual gearbox) here in the US. I'd rather have the Corolla but it still costs more. And, importantly, quite a bit bigger especially if you live somewhere with tight parking.

For a single guy that doesn't head off road and only is lugging himself around town from A to B, wanting to be as environmentally friendly and as fuel efficient as possible, this is the best and even with the price rise, the cheapest option on the market. Even the hybrid Corolla (which a lot of people compare this to, saying it's around the same price) uses an extra L/100km and is missing a couple of safety features present in this new Yaris. precisely.not many companies bother with this class anymore.you have the chinese with mg3 which priced well below this and the japanese with the suzuki swift.and then there is the europeans with the volkswagen polo and skoda fabia.price one right of any of them automatic/air/alarms and it entices people to return when moving a class above.i would rather a corolla or anything in the next class above personally.i have test driven things like early peugeot 206's,first generation mazda 2 and the earlier renault clios which were fun but prefer something a bit bigger.

get a current shape one used alternatively with warranty balance.far better buy than some of these tiny tiddlers and a lot safer.personally i wouldn't buy anything smaller than that class of car.it is all well and good if your main family car is some fancy pants european and this is your runabout but what if say one is a pizza hut driver and has to drive something like this around or their own car.many if the car is newish prefer their own.i drove one of the early yaris from 2008 on the job when working with them and it was awful.my own car at the time was a nissan tiida 2006 model.i preferred my nissan over the toyota.

    • @franzchong5889

true.if it does not have to be new scour the used car lots for something cheaper.i would suggest mazda 2 or 3 2017-2018 models at the present time, holden astra 2017-2019,corollas 2017-2018 or a last of the nissan pulsar c17 2016-2017 to name but a few.even a used mercedes small car if you can find one for under 20 grand such as the b class or a class is better than any of the tiny tots.

Silver Elgrand Low - Actually Silver, are you in the United States? Because this is a review of the brand new Yaris being imported into Australia. What you are most likely referring to is the Yaris that has been sold in the US for a couple of years now, and it is indeed, as you say, a REBADGED MAZDA 2 !!!!! Why Toyota decided to do this in the US market - I have no idea. But here in Australia, we have only ever had actual Toyota designed and built Yaris models - this totally new model and all previous models.

Wayne Hobbs - No Wayne, this certainly is a ridiculous price, but Toyota have generally in the past always had very good value vehicles. And for many years, they have had the very best fixed price servicing in the business. A $40-50k RAV4 has $210 per year fixed priced servicing for up to 5 years. That’s terrific value! Toyota Australia can do it if they want to.
