Tom reviews the new 2021 Toyota Yaris Hybrid hatch and provides an expert opinion.
Is the Yaris really worth this much money? Even though this review should have been all about the 2021 Yaris is a much better car to drive, on the new TNGA platform and with a new three-cylinder engine, it’s much more expensive than we thought. Why? Because of stringent new safety requirements. This new Toyota Yaris has heaps of safety tech, including intersection AEB and a centre airbag. But does it really make sense? How much fuel does the Yaris Hybrid use? Let’s find out!
In today’s view, Tom Baker from Chasing Cars conducts a review of this new generation of the Toyota Yaris ZR Hybrid finished in blue with a black roof over light Y-shape cloth trim.
What do you think of the all-new Yaris? Would you go petrol or hybrid? Or would you take a Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta or Kia Picanto instead? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments box below.

This car is really quite nice. I've always driven cars without arm rests and it is pretty easy to get used to. But definitely not worth $25-35k. 100% rather a corolla for the same price.

I feel it is a crime to not have an armrest in a 35K car. After market tends to be very flimsy, so better to buy the ones fitted from factory.

Hi Tom, great review as usual. If someone wants to go for a compact suv with pretty good safety tech and drive comfort within the city and long drives to country side, what will be your pick? Budget upto 60kAUD and preferably lasting more than 5 years with some resale value. I think too much of expectations ,buying car in Australia(sydney) for 1st time can be an overwhelming experience for someone coming from India. Any suggestions will be helpful(if you see this comment). Thanks in Advance(if this comment is noticed and replied upon 🙂🙂)

Was going to buy a ZR Yaris like this till the price dropped! $35k for a small car - no thanks! Even if it’s fuel economy is brilliant, the upfront cost is just to damn high. Went for a Kia Picanto GT line auto instead for $18,690. The Kia was just much better value for money over the next five years.

You can get new hybrid mid version corolla but then newer hatchback corolla rear space, accessing rear seat and limited boot space are not great and that way Yaris then is better. For me from user end perspective Pros for corolla hatch are: electric parking mode, arm rest, wireless charging. Cons: limited rear space and boot and no space saver spare.
For Yaris Pros: decent boot with space saver spare, nice accessibility of rear space.
Cons: no arm rest, no wireless charging and no electric parking mode.

Thanks for yet anther excellent review, Tom. I don’t know what to make of the Yaris, particularly the price. It looks good, it’s nice inside and the safety features are first class The fuel economy is excellent and it goes reasonably well, if you buy the hybrid. As I get closer to retirement, I want to like the Yaris. Unfortunately, I just can’t get past the price. I have a feeling other ‘brands’ might offer what I’m after for less.

Interesting to see how differently equipped the same car can be all over the world. I've driven a rental Yaris in Italy last year. It was basic trim level, but it had an armrest.
Another interesting thing for me: Because I'm getting one soon, I've watched a lot of Yaris reviews - mainly from Germany and the UK, and now this one from Australia. All of the Yaris had the indicator lever on the left side, even in the UK, except in this video.

They should have kept the Prius C/Aqua. Larger boot space and slightly more cabin space especially for back seat passengers. And cheaper. The 2018 Prius C version sold in NZ for NZ$24,999 which is cheaper. Even the Corolla hybrid has less back seat space & less boot space than the Aqua/Prius C. That it would pay to upgrade to the CHR or Yaris Cross.

Have to agree, the pricing is a risky strategy, given the competition but for looks, I think its ok. Little things like the single USB, small touch screen at this price suggest Toyota are still content to rest on their deserved rep for quality rather than compete actively imo. Glad to see the sass delivered appropriately here, Tom. $25-35k... nah.

Only Hybrid is available here in UK. We test drove the Excel version (comes with every option) in Tokyo Red for about 3 hours yesterday. It's a good car better than imagined to use around town and commute to work etc. Panoramic roof is cool reminds me of a Tesla Model 3's glass roof even. Not impressed by LED headlights which don't have Adaptive feature and even projector lens so cut off line of light beam pattern isn't sharp. It has head up display, can drive itself for a short time auto follow car at front, brake itself and keep in lane etc Costs around £22k with some discounts. Still thinking to get this or a slightly used BMW i3S which drives more fun and faster.

These are a regular fixture in airport car parks as hire cars. I know I have rented many (as they often have a manual version available). Otherwise good on Toyota for slowly changing its imagine with some interesting to look at and drive cars.

Nice review. The trim levels in Australia seems to be under par compared to Europe. 8 inch monitors, armrests and much better looking seating fabrics come to mind. This really is a car for European or Japanese cities with heavy traffic. If I lived anywhere else I would opt for a Peugeot 208 or VW Polo. I should have mine in 2 months, Greece, with the hybrid engine and safely / driving features that won me over.

    • @thearmychef

The trim level I have ordered, Dynamic Style, has a cost of 20.300 Euros which is around 32.000 Aus D. 8 inch monitor, electronic brake, better looking seating fabrics, armrest, different 16 inch alloy, camera assistance for parking are the differences I have noted. These featuteres are available as stabdardAdvanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as Lane Trace Assist, Emergency Steering Assist and Intersection Turn Assistance. These are available only as options on more expensive cars.

Great review. Nice looking car. Price will knock it off most lists. But more importantly for me, the lack of the centre arm rest is a big miss Toyota. You can't even option it?! I would fall over every time I sat into the car. A similar issue with RHD Mustang’s in Oz. The cup holders in the centre arm rest are right where your arm sits. Ford was too cheap or lazy to convert the centre arm rest. I would never buy one for that reason.

Thanks for the nice tour of inner Sydney, we really miss it :) There's a market for the Yaris and Toyota know it and have treated those buyers with an outstanding update. People who will pay a little more to get a rock solid little car that will last a very long time. Medical couriers, the bus depot changeover cars, people who see a car as simply an appliance to get from A to B, and cheapskates who see the ultra-long term value proposition. Well done Toyota.

      I tend to agree.
The comments are indicative of why the small/city car is disappearing, "I can get a bigger car for the money", yes you can, a lure I can understand perfectly, but does that make your parking spot bigger?
      How about that city traffic?
Small gaps are often the only gaps, and fuel is never, ever going to get cheaper.
In the decade you drive the yaris, how much will fuel be in 2030?
The cars listed as comparable class and price wise, will have a lower resale and their reputation for reliability has nowhere near the same level of consumer expectations.

    • @michaellewis5218
      @michaellewis5218 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@adam145 Why does everyone keep comparing the Corolla to the Yaris? What does it have in comparison? If I wanted its top-spec model (which I'd need if comparing to the top-spec Yaris model) I am spending almost 40K! I don't understand why people say X is better than the Yaris, and their X is mentioning a bigger car. I don't want a bigger car, I want the smallest car possible.
I also want a Hybrid, I don't, again, see why people compare petrol to Hybrid. Yes, from the get-go you're spending more, but that's the price of a Hybrid, it's not meant to be compared to a petrol. You pay more $, and you see that as an offset in itself, I accept the extra cost, and then my day-day is cheaper.
I don't get why there are so many articles calculating how long it takes to offset the price of the Hybrid, compared to a Petrol. It's like comparing apples and oranges. The Hybrid price, currently, should be accepted as is. Again, I accept the extra cost, and then my day-day is cheaper.
Again, sorry for the rant! Not at you, just in general, about car reviews! :)

Nice review as always👍🏻 Toyota have totally blown me away. The arrogance of Toyota Australia stating that if you can't afford the new Yaris "buy secondhand" is simply stunning. Pricing is ridiculous, and as the world economy crumbles I'm sure they will think again. As others have said, pricing against their own Corolla is plain weird. On this basis their Corolla based Cross model will be priced above the now overpriced RAV 4! I don't normally have much to say, but I'm angry when other industries are holding or cutting pricing to survive, Toyota are living in their own blinkered "lets hike up prices" bubble. Such a shame. Toyota are not alone in this, I should add. I find it a big turn off from the brand.

Pricing aside, shame that Toyota decided to invest money into useless rubbish like a soft front dash when it would have been much better spent doing so on the rear doors, at least on the armrests. I’ve always thought it and I’ll say it now, it’s pretty much only car reviewers that give a toss about the front dash material. families wanting a small city runabout would get much more utility out of investing just a tiny bit in rear passenger experience in tactile areas, as nobody likes hauling the kids when they’re unhappy at being in an uncomfortable back seat.

Barely anyone will buy that version, because you can get a Corolla for the same money, and anyone that still buys the Yaris does it because they like the car, and don't mind the price. Don't compare the Volkswagen with Toyota, they are of totally different mindset. Toyota builds expertise "boring" time proven cars, Volkswagen bulbs bountiful "sporty" cars and the fact that they burn oil as soon as you are turning them on is an "operational characteristic". that said, some people don't care about reliability because they don't keep their cars that long any away and just want to have fun, so go for it.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s no longer accurate, and I say that as a Volkswagen owner. Toyota cars drive very differently nowadays - since the company started moving each model onto new platforms that place emphasis on dynamics. The president says “no more boring cars” back in 2012 and slowly, each badge is falling into line. The price is a separate issue - but Toyotas are undeniably better than ever to drive...
