  • Is this hybrid the new small car of choice?
    The Toyota Yaris has gone hybrid only for 2021. In this CarGurus UK review Rebecca Jackson talks through what that means for fuel economy and performance, as well as evaluating how the Yaris fares for style, practicality and value compared with its rivals. Has Toyota finally made the Yaris into a product you can buy with your heart as well as your head?

    I've just ordered one. Well it's at the garage and I'm taking delivery in 2 days. Its the same pec as this car but in dark grey. Mine also has a red stripe across the front and rear bumpers. Just to look at it's quite squat and rally orientated. I'm 6 ft and luckily the seats go low enough and he steering wheel is in a perfect position for me then. Very happy and the warranty, plus 0% interest deal made it really afforable. 👍

    2:04 In most ofthe rest of Europe, the Yaris can also be bought with a 1,0L or a 1,5L petrol engine, the latter with both manual and automatic gearboxes.

    Note that the ‘B’ mode in the transmission is there to select ‘engine braking’, not to select regenerative braking at all. When it’s in use, it is rather like using a low gear in a manual gearbox - say 3 out of 6, roughly, while rolling downhill. Normally only used on long descents down which the battery would become full, so one is back to friction braking. During your demo, it would not be used normally. (I’m used to the previous Yaris hybrid, so interesting to have a look at the new one).

      It’s regen braking in the eCVT, I drove one for a day and when in electric, if you put it in ‘B’ and lift off, it regens a lot more than in drive, the battery charges up so much quicker
      She is also correct, driving in B stresses the hybrid synergy drive system, it also activates the engine 25% more than in drive

    • @RefractArt
      @RefractArt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aidan1585 B is for engine Braking not for regenerative, it wont regenerate faster, so no, all wrong.

    • @aidan1585
      @aidan1585 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RefractArt it does regen harder, i've driven one MULTIPLE times.. in electric if you are slowing down (without the brake pedal)/regen braking and you are in drive, there is moderate regen, but if you put it in 'B', you immediately feel the difference, from what I felt, it's about 30% stronger. It does actually stress the hybrid system, I've read it before by lots of different specialists, they recommend not to drive in B very often. If the engine is on, it will rev slightly higher for 'engine braking' which doesn't really work on a car with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT).

    Ten months ago we were very enthusiastic about the new Yaris Hybrid and planned to replace our then four and a half year old Yaris Hybid with the new one in the summer.
    Until we found out that the new Yaris is not exactly a practical car.
    Rebecca already shows that even for her (she is 1.64 m. tall), there is hardly enough space in the back seat. What she does not show is that the rear doors only open very limited. I would say a crack...
    When I (1.83 m.) am behind the wheel and our daughter (1.86 m.) then squeezed herself in through that crack, she is poking in the front seat (and my back) with her knees. And there are two daughters that size...
    Don't even think about installing a child seat through those doors and then we better not talk about getting the (struggling?) child into that seat...
    Fortunately, we discovered the Honda Jazz. Compare the space in the back of the Yaris in this video (from 3:32) with what it looks like in the Jazz in this (also CarGurus) video th-cam.com/video/FwJwmD9Dksg/w-d-xo.html from 2 :10.
    By the way, smart to have the review of the Yaris done by a not too tall person and that of the Jazz by a significantly taller person... 😉
    The comparison of the reviews makes clear what we had already discovered: Of these two hybrids, the Jazz is suitable as a family car, the Yaris (unfortunately) not.
    You can probably guess which car is the successor of our Yaris...
    Correct! We have been driving satisfied in that spacious, comfortable (and economical) Jazz for more than 4 months now!

  • @tectorama
    @tectorama 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It is indeed a good car, we are getting just under 66 MPG from ours here in the UK.
    I understand it's not being sold in the US ? It's a little noisy at speed, but I can cope with that.
    We have the "Design" model. The Sat-Nav needs a phone with Android 10 or greater, and a charging
    cable may not work. You need a data cable.

    • @marcalin8950
      @marcalin8950 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewsmoughton2136 I tested between the normal version and the JBL one. In my opinion it is a worthy upgrade because you do get an amp with the JBL system which makes the difference in sound quality, meaning that distortions at high volume are non existent. But premium sound systems are not as well built like they were back in the days, so I advise you to not use it at it's max potential because you may end up in time with broken/blown/decentrede speakers. Also during winter time you may have to wait for the amp to warm up a little before you start listening to loud music. Hope this is helpful.

    Android Auto is very good, giving you navigation with voice control, as well as other features. You do need a phone with
    at least Android 9. Despite what many reviewers say, the CVT transmission is very good.

      A year on, I’m considering going for one of these soon, to take over from a previous Yaris in that grade. It has an older built-in sat-nav system, but it appears that the manufacturers are washing their hands from kit like that. In effect, the built in display only works for map display etc if one has a smartphone switched on while driving.

      A previous drive in that model (1.0L diesel) was the reason why I was very hesitant of buying a Yaris when I needed something to replace my 4-door Almera N15 back in 2011. The drive was terribly sluggish and the speedometer fealt like it sat right behind the number plate.
      After a test drive in a used 1.3L from 2007, I fealt differently though. The 2. generation was just a lot more refined, and that little pregnant rollerskate really grew on me, and I still smile whenever I see one on the road. :) I had it for about 5 1/2 years before buying a 2016 model 1.33L. That one will be gone on thursday afternoon though, as I well be taking over my new hybrid, that I have waited more than 5 months for.

      Pigeon poo, this Yaris does 0-62 in 9.7 seconds which is faster than the Rover 3.5 V8 P6, which could only manage 0-60 in 10 seconds. It wasn’t considered slow by the Met, who made extensive use of them. It could only achieve 18-19 mpg on a good day, hence the reserve fuel lever which was frequently pulled. Some Yaris drivers are reporting as much as 70 mpg. Perhaps they are the ‘grannies’ you allude too?

      @@Silver-st2zq personally I enjoy an automatic box more, and I do drive my car almost daily since here in Finland we don’t have any lockdowns 🚙.
