3:40 Jim talks about a principle of composition instead of imposition
4:03 Step 2: Jim spreads The mulch over the top after he casted The Black eyed pea seed.
4:43 Step 3: what are the mulch and compost in. by watering heavily he's making compost tea in place. The reference Sea-90

Have been growing onions for a while in far North Queensland Australia, when we transplant we always top and tail them. Tops 3 to 4 inches, roots cut to 1 inch keep them moist, seaweed bath before you plant. Have found some that fell out of the transplant basket, being lying on the path for a week, planted them and grew no worries

Hmmm I came back here this morning to thank a commenter for sharing his discovery of fungal wilt which I had to look up (verticillium wilt) because what he described is exactly what is happening to me. This was extremely helpful information for me to diagnose an issue I'm experiencing and his comment is gone. That is unfortunate as it was an eye opener and definitely changes my strategy moving forward.

In a climate where freezing winters come (north KY) it changes the process of growing your own sweet potato slips - I'm thinking if I can utilize some whole potato that I've stored over winter, get them to sprout in spring, then it's as simple as that? Wondering... Jim makes compost tea/extract when laying down the mulch. He's identified his homemade compost as the keystone ingredient for great seedlings. Does he make compost tea from his homemade compost and apply it when he returns from Maine? Maybe this would help boost fertility a touch.
A simple way to make an extract, put a bag of compost in the washing machine on delicate.

I would be interested in Jim's self care regiment if that's not too invasive on his privacy. I too am a small scale farmer, but lifting all those loads, moving all that mulch, squatting, using your hands and body so much can leave you feeling pretty physically exhausted...and Jim looks impressively energized in these videos

I recall him talking about a time management formula he lives by in one of these videos. It was based on 4/4/4, and if I remember correctly it was four hours labor, four hours self-care (he talked about reading and journaling during that time), and four hours for others/giving back/community. Not sure which video it was because each one has so many nuggets of wisdom in them, it's not like it was a specific video topic, but part of the conversation. I also seem to recall he said he was pretty strict about it in order to keep balanced. I think about that when I'm pushing myself too hard, but still have a very hard time disciplining myself to be still and rest because there is always more to be done. But like he said, he's got everything pretty well dialed in. And that's because he has systems in place that he has developed over time.
