      He is a hard worker. I'm 61- I don't think I've the discipline to pull this size operation off .... in an Australian climate. But he is using an 'Eden Garden' principal with his mulching ... in a way. Now Curtis Stone was saying that an 'E G' system using mulch wouldn't work for market gardeners, but here we are, well done.

    I love Jim’s passionate connection to the earth and his plants. All our farmers once shared this connection before mechanization and industrialization.
    “And when that crop grew, and was harvested, no man had crumbled a hot clod in his fingers and let the earth sift past his fingertips. No man had touched the seed, or lusted for the growth. Men ate what they had not raised, and had no connection to the bread. The land bore under iron, and under iron gradually died; for it was not love or hated, it had no prayers or curses.”

      You need compost, biochar, compost tea, mulch and or cover crops

    • @dogslobbergardens6606
      @dogslobbergardens6606 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What Hosoi Archives said, plus: Comfrey tea is great. Or just chop the comfrey leaves and use them as mulch.
      I use a fair amount of grass clipping tea and "weeds" tea, too. There's a lot of nutrients and minerals in those plants. I let the grass and "weeds" grow long to allow their roots to get deep in the soil, then mow them down and just soak them in water for a couple weeks. Strain the plant material out and put it in your compost pile or use it as mulch. Dilute the liquid with more water (roughly 1 part tea to 10 parts plain water) and give that to your plants 2 or 3 times a month.
      For nitrogen-hungry crops, human pee diluted with 10 parts plain water give a nice boost of nitrogen and trace elements. Just be cautious if you're on a lot of medications, that might be an issue, I don't know.
      As you build up healthy soil and especially using cover crops over a couple seasons and beyond, you will need less and less fertilizer.

    The perfect lighting for the garden; it's glowing! To those like me who moved to central Florida: I live 15 miles away from Jim and my climate is much more like Pete's. No broccoli, lettuce, beets until Fall again. The sun is brutal already on April 2. Jim's property is close to the Gulf and he's been developing that soil with loads and loads of compost over the years. Yes we can do it but within parameters. Properties near the water (much more temperate) are $$ and also often with HOA's and restrictions. I'm working on experimentation with planting tender crops in areas which only get morning sun; will see how that goes in terms of day length. Also will try some shade cloth over raised beds. Soon will be planting okra, corn and pumpkins, among others. This weekend I'm planting over 40 fruit trees. Lots of mulberries, I think of them as the radishes of the Florida tree selection. Easy!

      We all have to adapt to the conditions we're in, and I think that's part of the fun.

Broccoli already bolted, lettuce is mad at me, but the kale is holding up and European eggplant is growing but I really need to stay on top of cut worms! I only grow grape tomatoes 🍅 and they are holding up well. Try growing sissoo spinach and winged beans along with sweet potatoes. I’m planting mulberry as well with yucca, papaya, and banana. Another outstanding video packed full of information and inspiration 👊 Jim it was an honor meeting you, I think you are a special person. Your language: I don’t want to be a machine operator, I want to be a gardener. We are feeding the world by killing it. Folks need to pay attention to your message! Oh I think you could sell soil blocks at $1 each, try selling by the tray, (50-72). Not everyone will be interested but I bet you will be surprised at the additional revenue you will generate. Take prepaid orders of mixed trays to test the waters. Just a thought. And Pete my friend, after knowing you for, what over 2 years your passion to share is endless and genuine. Same for you Jim, continued success and many thanks for always inspiring me🙏
