  • Essential oils are everywhere and the global market is set to hit $27 billion by 2022. People say they can help you sleep, help you relax and even cure a toothache. Mic’s Alexis Kleinman investigates to find out if these oils are scientifically sound and if people actually believe essential oils can cure the illnesses people claim they can.

“Help cellular growth.” Does this woman know that encouraging fast cellular growth is pretty much the last thing you would want to do in cancer? Probably not. I suspect she doesn’t know cancer is uncontrolled excessive cell growth.

@@peanutforever2191 ...and I wonder how many women use skin products containing ALLANTOIN (compound in comfrey plant) to 'regenerate skin cells' aka get rid of wrinkles. An isolated allantoin proliferates cell growth and if you have an active cancer...well you know the answer. HOWEVER, a Symphytum Officinale aka comfrey plant (not symphytum vulgaris - russian compfry) is perfectly fine because there are other constituents that balance off the allantoin compound and is NOT harmful. It's all about chemistry and biology. Essential oils are okay, and they do help with conditions, but to say that they cure anything would be very bold statement. The word cure is repulsive to me because you cure bacon or other meat, but you HEAL the body. I can't stand Jasmin essential oil it makes me sickly nauseous - body chemistry. Rose, carrot seed and helichrysum itallicum essential oils do a wonder on my skin. I rather use single oils and make my own product than rely on manufacturer. If you didn't make it, you don't know what's in it. And, it is good to have a friend who is a chemist 🤓

I’ve been using and working with essential oils for years - they are amazing BUT the ridiculous claims made by some of the re-sellers of the brands you’re mentioning in your video are starting to damage to the whole idea of aromatherapy... Most importantly, keep yourself safe - if someone starts randomly encouraging you to ingest (drink or eat) or apply to the skin undiluted essential oils, it’s a red flag 🚩 Taking essential oils internally can be downright dangerous as a lot of them are toxic and can damage your liver and other organs. If you’re interested in essential oils, look for reputable, independent sources and DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. If you want to use essential oils therapeutically, at least go to a trained professional, preferably a certified aromatherapist. If you’ve fallen in love in essential oils and currently buying from one of the money hungry, misleading companies mentioned in the video, know that there are many sources where you can buy pure essential oils, if you want higher quality - go for organic 🌱

What annoys me is that companies like doTerra and Young Living are recruiting people and not properly training them on the material they are then speaking about. Obviously, this video is edited and I imagine that the person hosting the "class" said more than just these things, and the things we are being shown were not said very well and were not 100% true.
I believe what she meant instead of "help cellular growth" was that there are public studies showing that some essential oils can help in cell reproduction, minimizing the risk of cell mutation and the formation of tumors.
The first medicines made by humans were taking plants (essential oils) and isolating specific parts to create an outcome. This was the beginning of Western medicine as we now see it and the beginning of the decline in the common use of essential oils in the household.
In ancient times, those who had the knowledge of plants were older, wise, and were looked to with respect. Let's also take into account that in those times, people were not as disconnected, the quality of food was a lot higher, and our general lifestyle was very different. The baseline of health was higher.
A good thing to keep in mind is that the majority of these people are not bad or ignorant, they are good people who only wish to bring happiness to others through the medium of using elements of the Earth to reconnect us with our body, mind and spirit.
    Much love to you all

  • @robertolson3115

Essential oils most certainly are changed from their natural state. These are highly concentrated plant oils. When we concentrate these oils we alter their chemical properties, creating flammable hydrocarbon oils. You won't strip paint with an orange, but you will strip paint with concentrated orange oil. Many of these oils are not much different than any other plant derived solvent such as turpentine.

My mom was on a holistic side and dad on medical and I could tell you that holistic was many times superior when it comes to homeostasis to the medical/allopathic approach. What antibiotics destroyed, my mom's holistic remedies restored. I chose holistic approach, and I have to say it takes to be a disciplined person to keep clean diet, don't fall for junk/sugar food. Ofcourse go first with the natural. Essential is very effective IF you are buying the pure ones I am saying this because a lot of business out there are selling essential oils with a mixture of something totally not authentic. Pure essential oils are actually expensive! Because it takes a tons of leaves of certain products before it can yield a gram of oil. I know because I graduated Chemistry and extraction of Oregano Leaves was part of my thesis aside from that the process of extraction has a diffent stages it is not just like one step process, when you done extraction you still have to test the purity of substance. It is actually crucial from raw material to extraxtion process.

It cannot be explained by other scientists because they don't measure the frequency of things. Now, what these oil do is that it matches up the vibrational frequency of something that you want to be healed in your body. That's why some oils can't promise that it will heal you because that's not the frequency that will treat your illness. I am an essential oil manufacturer from India. We extract essential oil of many medicinal and aromatic plants. I would like to mention that there are lot of blind beliefs amongst people about essential oils.
Yes. They are very precious. They are pure essence of plants and contain all the medicinal and aromatic properties of that particular plant. However, not much useful for retail users.
For example, even a small bottle of holy basil essential oil can be used to make 100 bottles of cough syrup.
1 kg of lemon essential oil is sufficient to make more than 10,000 soaps. Thats why they are precious.
But, as a retail customer, do you need that many cough syrup or soaps / perfumes/ cosmetics? NO. They are precious for manufacturers.
They must know What is their purpose for buying.
Also, most of the ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL OILS are almost pure alcohol and not meant to apply directly on skin or even smelling them directly won't do much good. They need to be diluted with healthy career oils before using on skin or in aroma therapy. Infact the more you dilute them the better they smell.
    They have different dilution ratios.
For example, Rose Geranium essential oil needs to be diluted 6-8 times before using for aroma therapy, 10-12 times for applying on skin.
From my experience, retail users can use them for
    1) making your own homemade perfume.
    2) mixing 1-2 drops in bath water for refreshment.
    3) for making homemade scented candles/ beauty products.
If you are not interested in that, then most of aromatic essential oils are not useful for you.
Medicinal essential oils however can help a lot to retail users in theory. If learned about plants medicinal properties.
    I hope this is helpful.
And also, you can get essential oils from me at very cheap rate because of currency difference. The 5 ml bottle sold on Amazon for 8$ - 15$, you can get from me for 3$ with same packaging. We deal only in bulk orders minimum quantity 100 kg.

Sadly, talking to other friends that are hardcore doTerra fans I find it so concerning that many people believe that they are medicine (or in some cases, even better than that). Never replace medicine and science with “alternative” medicine and pseudo science, because it will never work. If it did, we would just call it medicine without the prefix. Be specially weary if it comes from an MLM.

Sometimes, restoring the mood can be one of the best things toward restoring health. That's not "making a health claim". It is just saying that some things, such as the smell of lavender, have an effect on the human brain that is notable. Lavender is my go-to oil. ..never, ever, should anyone be encouraged to ingest essential oils, however, as they are very concentrated and can contain powerful chemicals. Yet, unadulterated plant oils are also great natural household cleansers the fragrance of which won't kill you to inhale.(unlike many of the manmade cleaners on the market.) I can't say enough good things about natural essential oils, especially from organically farmed crops. Could save the world, Imo.

I was a little disappointed that the doctor she interviewed was a retired psychiatrist and not a medical doctor. She segued from talking about oil absorption being suspicious into his opinion as if he was going to reveal something scientific and then he didn't. So she basically just showed that these companies are MLM businesses and that they aren't meant to be used as a drug. I have used essential oils but I'm on the fence about whether they work. I have had a drop of peppermint oil in a cup of tea completely sooth a nasty sore throat. Their "breathe" oils are fantastic for clearing sinuses. DoTerra's Deep Blue is far better than any Icy-Hot type lotion I've ever used. That being said though there are a lot of claims the people who sell these make that sound closer to people using crystals to heal your body than actual science. I think they have some benefits, but they aren't the otherworldly healing tool their sellers claim.

I agree with the general idea of this video because of pyramid schemes like DoTerra and was hoping I could just appreciate the video but this is straight up ignorant and only considers a western-medicine perspective. They skipped the entire perspective that is common in the world of eastern-medicine which is the idea that essential oils can be integrated into preventative health rather than treatment. For example in the practice of Ayurveda (Indian medicinal healing system) essential oils are used not to cure health issues but rather prevent them in the first place. They are used to boost the immune system, provide emotional relief and probably much more. I would argue that since people have been using essential oils all throughout humanity that they are safe and clearly benefit us in some way. I don't think people should be using essential oils until they are properly educated on how it can affect their health for better or worse, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily a bad thing.
I'm just going to point out some quick flaws in the counter-argument to this video.
    1. One clearly biased psychiatrist's opinion of essential oils is simply not sufficient enough to make a valid point about the safety of essential oils. For starters, he's a psychiatrist which means he is specialized in the field of neurology and mental disorders, not holistic health. Perhaps a less biased practitioner or holistic health specialist would have helped make the argument clearer. Aside from talking about lack of research he didn't have much insight to offer about the subject other than his strong opinion that essential oils don't work.
    2. YOU CAN'T CURE CEREBRAL PALSY. This example honestly made me feel disgusted considering I have never heard an essential-oil rep claim it will cure something of that degree. CP is a developmental disorder you are born with. I will give it to you that many of these sellers are uneducated and it stems from the lack of responsibility or integrity of these pyramid schemes, but that doesn't mean that the oil couldn't have relieved any of the symptoms related to the person's CP.
    3. I don't think the FDA is very credible in making an argument about wellness and authenticity considering they're generally greedy and not willing to pass anything that makes them lose money. If you believe in the concept of big-pharma you'd know why there's a lack of research or legality in the field of essential oils: It makes western-medicine practices lose money. Why would they want you to know if these oils actually benefit you?
    4. There is a substantial amount of research on essential oils if you are willing to do the digging. Even if it's not on the oil itself there is plenty of research on the chemicals in essential oils that provide their therapeutic benefits. The thing is that there is a lack of research in America basically because of big-pharma. If people know these work, they will lose money.
    5. Clearly the practice of essential oils and holistic wellness works in the world of eastern-medicine, yet western-medicine practitioners will jump on any opportunity they can to tell you all about how essential oils don't work. Look at all the healthy people in India practicing ayurveda and using essential oils and are perfectly healthy and happy. Again, it's all about what makes them money. If this system works in other parts of the world, why is it suddenly "fake" and "pseudoscience" here? You do the reasoning.
Thank you for hitting the head on the issue of disinformation in the essential oil field related to shitty pyramid schemes but please keep the ignorant fearmongering to yourself. I finished watching this feeling completely disgusted by the obvious lack of research put into the video. This is so unbelievably ignorant by failing to include other cultures who are living in the same world as us as we speak that are dedicating themselves to holistic health and clearly benefiting from it.

Your response is the only one I have read that makes sense. The video, in my opinion, is very bias and based on nothing. Many doctors are controlled by large pharmaceutical companies who are throwing big bucks at advertising and political agendas. If these oils were only claiming that they help concentration, relaxation, no one would care. They are claiming to cure CANCER. It's people like you who fall for these schemes and perpetuate them. Also, these oils being even a little beneficial does not change the FACT that Young Living is a pyramid scheme. Why don't you look up the man who created Essential Oils. He murdered his own baby (had no idea what the fuck he was doing with a home birth and held it underwater for over an hour), claimed he was a doctor without actually being one, and has been charged with fraud in the past. Essential oils, the main ingredient in Aromatherapy, are constantly being tested in studies for their potency and medicinal properties.

Nobody is discounting the validity of using oils for AROMA. We've known for a while that different smells can have an influence on our pyschological state. The problem is, most "essential oils" are NOT used for merely that purpose. They're often ingested or applied topically, which can be not just misleading to the consumer, but outright dangerous.
