    This is great that finally the topic of sustainability related to essential oils is starting to show up!
    (I would like to apologize ahead of time for my English grammar!)
    I would like to formulated a couple of observations based on the interview;
    1) Talking about how essential oils are a low yield based on how much plant material/square meters is a misleading statment, that are more farm products that are low yield but of high value, the bigger question is about context and how are these botanicals are being grown, most of the growing comes from industrial agriculture (organic or not) which is the root of the problem regardless of the crop.
    2) There is other uses for the left over plant material, rather than just hoping for a compost heap or to waste. There are some industries that will use solvents to extract other molecules that aren't extractable from steam distilation such as rosmarinic acid. On the other hand the left over plant is a great source of organic matter that can be used all around the farm which is what we do.
    3) I have to disagree about taking away land from nature and the comparison of food production being accepable, since the same method for growing essential oils (industrial) is used to grow food crops which have an equally damaging enviromental impact, our problem arises for the extremes for segregation, conservation on one side that is almost fanatic in its preservasion and agriculture on the other side that is the complete devastation and disregard of our enviroment.
    4) Sustainable Wild harvesting is a though cookie to crack which is trully depedent on which countries we are talking about, Portugal/Spain has a necesity for a trully sustainable wild managing to lower the probability of forest fires, of course if there is over harvest no good is being done.
    5) I wouldn't call hydrosols a by-product or sub-product of distilaton of essential oils, I would change the language to low quality hydrosols, why is this important? artesian producers can make both high quality hydrosol and essencial oils in the same run!! there is no need for a speciality distillation only a keen experience to know when to separeta such products, focusing the language on distilating for 1 product or another gives to much wheight to industrial production of essencial oils and home made production of hydrosols, leaving artesian producers in a rather complicated situation.
    6)I would have to agree 100% on buying locally only, it is the only way to close the loop of sustainability, whichever botanicals grown in your region thats what you have to use.
    A good compheartarisen, before the globalized market, was the rich local gastronomy that existed in each region, since the local population had only access to what food could grow localy, a boom in inovation/tradition/culture followed...
    Im happy for these talks to pop up and I hope I didn't leave to big of a comment! 💚💚

      Hi Yoko, the world of essential oils is huge. Some oils are not what they seem, you need to get them from the right supplier. Thank you for liking the episode, we have a lot more coming up. Our enrolment also opens tomorrow. Have you thought about studying with us? Pop this link into your browser and join our pre-enrol list so we can keep you up-to-date :) formulabotanica.com/pre-enrol

      @@FormulaBotanicaSchool Thank you for taking the time to reply. Is it possible to source essential oils sustainably? Is there any resource you recommend I check to learn more about this topic? I will check your course! Thank you.🙏

    With an Essential Oil interest I meddled with the extraction process in Southern Africa extracting Geranium, Rose, easy peel Orange and other oil. The oil is essential because it protects the host plant from parasite and insect destruction. The "Essential" part is nothing to do with humanity; it's essential to the survival of the plant. Plants in their natural environment flourish at perfect temperatures, in ideal natural conditions. Bluebell grows well in tree shade and produces delightful EO., best extracted at the end of life of the plant. We should never remove bulbs from Bluebell plantations but extracting the oil from the plants sunset of life is harmless to the plant but rewarding to the EO industry.
    Certainly you provide excellent service to the industry. Sustainability needs greater awareness among global producers.

    When you mean floral waters, is it the same thing as hydrosols?

    As a soap formulator, I find the use of EOs should be outright banned from wash-off products. Keep this precious material for medicinal purposes, in leave-on formulas, where the benefits are present and measurable and not destoyed by a concentrated lye solution... EOs in soap are only for scent, what a waste of resources!
