    Having been a licensed mechanic for most of my younger years (pre 45 lol) , I really appreciated the thorough approach you have in your repair work. Absolutely no shortcuts. I was raised under the rule "if its worth doing, it's worth doing right. Your video and mechanical skills are a breath of fresh air and a life saver for me. I am doing the exact same rebuild on my 2008 Tahoe / with 4.3 Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2. Thank you for this posting. Great Job !!

    Many thanx. Excellent video production and very clear and concise instruction. One of the best how-to's I've ever seen on TH-cam.

    Thanks for sharing ,I too bought a1993 270 Sea Ray weekender from people in Lake of the Ozarks, however they were both retired and just moved the boat down to Florida. They assured me the boat was turn key and a new engine. Long story short these two people were so convincing I never checked the engine oil. When I got home 1200 miles away, the engine oil had water in it and was milky. I contacted the previous owners who lived in MO and they said it was my fault and did not want anything to do with us. I know now that they new what they were selling. Well, I bought a long block 454 from Sand J engines and many new parts also and put that in the Sea Ray. works beautifully three years later, I installed a swim plate form and a anchor system in the front. I can sympathize with you on your Sea Ray. So buyer beware, . The gimbal bearing is now bad and I am having quite a lot of trouble doing the alignment with the outdrive with the engine. Two days now and the outdrive will not go in. I have an alignment tool and looked at the grease marks on the end and it seems to be fine, The outdrive simply will not go in no matter what I do. I will have to see if somehow the splines in the coupler are marred up or what ever. will be back at it tomorrow. Thanks again for all your videos. I am not the only one that got duped by sellers.

    I spent weeks researching paint for this effort. Used Primocon inticorrosive underwater primer with Trilux 33 paint. The Trilux cannot be applied using a spray gun per the instructions. I used a good old paintbrush, and found that the appearance is good nuff for something you can't see in the water. Just use a paintbrush! Thank you to the video author for a thorough overview of the process - I found it very useful.

    Iam going to sandblast my project parts down the bone, powder coat 'em black, bake 'em in the oven and call it good. This will be my third boat resto and I can't say enough about how much time, labor, and money I save this way. Nice job with your videography. It's easy to recognize the minutiae your dealing with. Thanks-

      @xlaroma 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You shouldn't sandblast outdrives and transoms, the original coat paint is the best protector, you don't want to remove that, just acid wash, light sand and paint over it.

    Great Job! Love the vids. Have you realized your assembly videos of the Alpa Drive are going to be the first on TH-cam. All the other video are just disassemble. The only assembly vids are of the water pump housing and impeller. I plan on Videoing the rebuilding of my Volvo Penta 280 Drive.

    I don't understand after all that labor in prepping everything, why go cheap with valspar and rustoleaum instead of using Trilux 33 that is specifically made with anticorrisive properties for aluminum outdrives?

    Hi Jay,
    I've used the JD Green/Yellow of the same Valspar Implement paint and the sun fade was horrible. How is your outdrive paint holding up? I hope well, but knowing what I know about the JD Valspar, I'd be buying Mercruiser paint

    I think you meant Spring down as you are installing it as that would be the proper way as you laid it in the whole while demoing. But, Up to you was the top of the gimbal housing as it sitting on the floor. Just Saying

    Great video. I am doing the exact same thing on my two bravo 3's.... lots of work! One question: in the inner part of the transom, there is a metal hexagonal fitting( you can see it clearly in your video at 1.46) that is supposed to connect to something...can't find any information or a replacement. Do you know what it is?

    Just curious. You made point to prime the parts prior to paint but then in your video you right to paint no primer shot? Just curious if you meant that or left that part out the video.

    I know you didn't want to go crazy on the gimbal housing and what not, but I wonder how sandblasting and powder coating fairs on something like that?

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage
      @FriscoBoatersGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it would be ok, but just make sure that you use the right primer

    • @rev9fan1
      @rev9fan1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @splash5974

      Powder coating would be the best option.
      Second would be epoxy primer and top coat with a catalyzed paint.

  • @FabianCharrua
    @FabianCharrua 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not powder coating or epoxy paint instead of paint?

    You probably will not read this anymore, but at 10 minutes in the video it looks like you put the seal on the steering arm in backwards. Or does it just look like it in the video? Nice project you got there!!

    Hey Great video...I have a Regal 2860 with Twin Volvo Penta outdrives....I get a bit of water in my bilge usually after going out.... can this be from a leak in my Bellows or Gimbal housing ? Thanks again

    • @hatersaywhat8986

      Go over all screws holding cables, decking, exc. and tighten well. Then place some caulking over (outside/inside).
      I had my pump running once a hour at least. Took it in and mech said he fixed it. Next day on the water and it was doing it again. Took a look while in water and about 3 screws holding my depth cable was leaking. Barely loose caused the leak.
      Hope it works for ya

    By the time you but all the parts do you save money vs just buying a new outdrive? I ask b/c I just bought a $100 project boat (95 bayliner 2355) that sat on a lift for the past 2 hurricane seasons and will probably need all the same work.
