You do fantastic work. You also seem to take it all in stride , which is good after you buy a boat that leaves you in a position that you found yourself in. My hats off too you ! I have learned so much from you about boats that I did not even think about before. Good luck too your family on your mom's illness. I have a good idea on what she and y'all are going through! I am a multiple myeloma ( bone cancer ) survivor... SO FAR!!! LOL . And yes i can laugh about it!! Too mom ... BE STRONG YOUNG LADY!! AND NEVER GIVE UP!!! I was diagnosed in 2015, it broke my back. A malignant tumor was crushing my spinal cord. Almost paralyzed me from mid chest down.major surgery, radiation, chemo, stem cell transplant the whole shebang. I went back too work 361 days later.
Great job man.. I went through the same on my 23ft bayliner..had to replace the fuel tank.. but at end of day knowing the work and pride you put into it is priceless..
You always do a first class job on the boat! Very good. I used CPES (Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer) on the marine plywood, I should have used the fiber cloth as you did.
Do you have to chop strand the deck if you use marine plywood? Or will 2 coats of resin be enough?Same with stringers. Is peanut butter and tabbing them in enough? Or do you need to use cloth?
Great video. Just wanted to know as I don't think I heard you say what type of resin? Polyester or epoxy. I am wanting to do a boat floor sanding down to get all the rubber carpet backing off so want to put a thin chop strand and resin over the entire floor. Never done this so not sure what resin to use. Any advise would be appreciated..
I used 80 grit. It allows some tooth for the gel to hold onto. I made mine pretty smooth as I wanted it to look really nice. It depends on how warm it is. Most of the time I let it cure just to where it is tacky and then put the second coat down.
I have a 15ft boat with plywood deck. Im gonna glass the deck and get it all sealed. Can i lay the glass matt (chopstrand? As you call it) up the sides a bit up against the gel coat? What i mean is will this seal perfectly up against the gel coat or do i have to grind the gelcoat back until glass is showing..
I see that it has been quite a few years since this video. Just aquired an '88 Seville... going to be doing the stringers and deck. Just curious...what did this part cost... to do stringers, deck, glass and gelcoat. Thanks... awesome work.
would be great to see a larger sea ray getting it done. I have a DA 300 and they put the carpet from wall to wall then installed every thing on top of it. had to just cut it off at the edge of my doors and cabinets. Also i need to get too my water tank with out destroying most of the steps . does any one have vids on these job's?
I’m wondering how it’s holding up after ten years after you finish the project please let me know what mess you are using and if it works for you still
So 4 layers of glass on the stringers and 2 on the deck, how long were the screws you used and what was the spacing and you glued the deck down I believe?!?!, what glue did you use?
If a board is already epoxied and dried, is it too late to glass over or can I wet it with the epoxy resin, put on the chopped strand and then wet it down like you did?
Not near the price you paid but because of covid our vacation plans got ruined. I used our cation money on a 40 yr old boat. Ready to go they said. Had it out once. Found the 305 motor sinking through the rear mounts due to rot
Nice I like using the red MEK rather that the clear to me I see the air better and rolll em out I just pulled a mold of a 10ft plug deck and hull gonna make about 5 parts out of those molds
Hi, I was wondering where you bought the chopped strand,? and if you could list what is needed resin and Gel coat? I have a different project I want to seal with fiberglass. I do like how your showing some of your technique this will help me in my own design, thanks
I watched your video and I am redoing the floor in my center console. I did my first layer of fiberglass today and it turned out like crap! I'm guessing that doing it in the sun, using a brush, and having a metal roller wasn't a good idea.
Apolgies if its been asked, it looks like you didnt use treated plywood, is that because you used the resin on both sides of the plywood to seal it up?
@@FriscoBoatersGarage thanks for the reply, been searching around and I got mixed up. So you used "marine grade" correct? I thought marine grade was pressure treated but I was mistaken
hi mate, the resin you use is much runnier than Im used to. is it a special kind of resin? whenever ive used resin it has not been pourable like yours, it has had the consistancy of warm treacle? just wondering what kind it is? cheers
A lot of work and slot of materials , people that don't do that type of work have no idea what is envolved. I am doing some major repairs on our sailboat, I have used 9 gallons of epoxy already. My coworkers just don't understand. Keep up the good work. I am considering using polyester in some areas to lower the cost. I see you use it a lot. Have you had any bonding issues ?
Hey Jay, what did you use to sand/ grind before applying gel coat. I am to that point now. How smooth does it need to be? How much time between coats do you have to wait. I got gel coat from US Composites like you told me. Thanks Bill
what is the mixing ratio you use to mix resin with hardener I mean like , do you go by the 10 drops to oz like it says in the can, cause it dries too fast when wixing 8 oz or more..
raul resto It depends on the brand. The junk from Home depot (elmers or bond) goes off quick no matter what you do. Each manufacturer will let you know what their optimal blend is.
Nice job! I'm curious, why does a boat that's a 95 have a wood floor to begin with? I have a 95 Four Winns that is completely fiberglass. No wood at all. Seems strange that a big company like Sea Ray hadn't modernized their by designs by the 90's.
How long can you wait before putting the gel coat on...? I've seen on another vid that polyester laminating resin needs to be sealed with something, or it stays tacky... Just trying to bust some myths in my mind here...
highvelocity123 The fast the better. Poly adheres to poly. If you wait too long you must sand it with 36 grit first before putting down your gel. The only reason to seal it is if you used over priced epoxy.
highvelocity123 Excellent question. I saw in another video where the guy added the wax portion during the gelcoat. After the matting/resin coat, he laid down a coat of primer for the gelcoat, then applied the final gelcoat with wax to harden it and ensure rock solid final product. Not sure what this guy in the video did because he didn't show us. So far his work is really nice.
Please watch this entire video. It will explain it all. There is an index on the video that will take you right to the discussion about resin. Please also watch the series from the beginning and I Go into great detail about mixing ratios. th-cam.com/video/D2RkvWkLFKE/w-d-xo.html
I bought some plywood to use like you did in this video but it's wet with the chemicals the company uses to treat the wood. Do I have to let it dry out before I can glass over it?? Thanks for all your helpful videos you make. I'm restoring my boat also and watching your videos has helped so much.
Hi Jay, thank you for the great videos. I am in the same situation with a 19' bow rider we just purchased. Do you recall how many total gallons of 105 resin you used? Thank you Paul in Wisconsin.
Hey jay ! Question ? How many gallons of poly did u use for the deck ? I just finished my stringers and about to start cutting my deck out next weekend .. I have 7 gallons left and I have to glass my ribs I'n still .. I'm the guy that has the 86 supra sunsport .. Thanks for all the videos brother .. It helps guys like me make since of all this ..

Awesome video man! Just purchased a 20' fiberglass boat and this video has given me confidence to tackle replacing the deck :) Thanks!
You are truthfully wanna of the most respectable men I have seen.
Thank you!
You always do a first class job on the boat! Very good.
I used CPES (Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer) on the marine plywood, I should have used the fiber cloth as you did.
Ricksos1 It depends on what you are doing. The Glass is a must in my boat for strength.
Holy crap! That is a daunting project. Bravo!
What is the little black round thing with wire at 11:04?
Awesome job...thanks for sharing....I will follow your instructions 😀 👍
I wish I could find an older bay boat and fix it like your doing. It’s looking good
hey man you can save alot of resin if ya use a metal notch roller!!
exciting times, progress is finally progressing, got to love it, great job. I would be done with fiberglassing for awhile when this project finishes.
did you also glass over the fuel tank joints? how would you access fuel tank in future? will you need to cut through the glass?
Too bad things didn't work out (lake ready boat) but know with all the nice work you've done now you know what ya got. Nice job.
Do you have to chop strand the deck if you use marine plywood? Or will 2 coats of resin be enough?Same with stringers. Is peanut butter and tabbing them in enough? Or do you need to use cloth?

Man Card right there!! kneeling right on the chop strand mat in shorts!!! Jay been watching you vid here for a bit now, keep up the killer DIY vids!!

Good video. Was wondering where your get your fiberglass sheets. Thanks
Homeowners association? ¿
nice job....the grandkids will get to use it!

Bravo Sir!......Bravo....I didn't hear your wifes voice in the background once. To you sir I say Bravo!
Did you also cover the underside?
Yes I did
I picked up a small boat i had to take up the floor what type of resin would i'll be using ?
Where do you buy this stuff?
Not near the price you paid but because of covid our vacation plans got ruined. I used our cation money on a 40 yr old boat. Ready to go they said. Had it out once. Found the 305 motor sinking through the rear mounts due to rot
In instead of chopped strand can I use fiberglass cloth for the ground?
looks awesome!!!! I know you are pleased with your progress and you take pride in your work!
Nice I like using the red MEK rather that the clear to me I see the air better and rolll em out I just pulled a mold of a 10ft plug deck and hull gonna make about 5 parts out of those molds
What resin did u use?
Is this how the boat was originally put together? I ask because that seems like alot of weight being added?
Hi, I was wondering where you bought the chopped strand,? and if you could list what is needed resin and Gel coat? I have a different project I want to seal with fiberglass. I do like how your showing some of your technique this will help me in my own design, thanks

How much alltogether resin dod you use? After all said and done.
Apolgies if its been asked, it looks like you didnt use treated plywood, is that because you used the resin on both sides of the plywood to seal it up?
Never use treated wood. It does not allow resin to stick and when it dries it warps.
@@FriscoBoatersGarage thanks for the reply, been searching around and I got mixed up. So you used "marine grade" correct? I thought marine grade was pressure treated but I was mistaken
What all you buy to seal it by name
I think secretly you wanted a project boat.
awesome job, but you may have thought about mahogany plywood for the deck wood job,all in all a very good job
Wow, have you made this super strong or is this how all boats are made? Super rigid structure. You should name the boat USS GRP.
hi mate, the resin you use is much runnier than Im used to. is it a special kind of resin? whenever ive used resin it has not been pourable like yours, it has had the consistancy of warm treacle? just wondering what kind it is? cheers
did you find the fiberglass local or did you have to order it? I'm in Dallas trying to get some to redo my deck
How many gallons of resin did u use?

When you move on to the next sheet, do you overlap it to the previous or do you put it edge to edge?
hi how doin hey one question where can i get the fiberglass that you used in this boat...
@deepfriedmeatpie
Epoxy is over kill. These boats are made from Poly and it is fine for this application.
Hey Jay, what did you use to sand/ grind before applying gel coat. I am to that point now. How smooth does it need to be? How much time between coats do you have to wait. I got gel coat from US Composites like you told me. Thanks Bill
It is a mixture of resin and filler to make it thick. I have a video of it here on my channel
Would you be using the West Marine fiberglass system 501-502 ?
How did you glass the bottom as well? Prior to installing deck and foaming?
I used one fore while and just did not like the results as much. You are right though.
Neat! What did you do about the underside of the deck? did you glass that before you put it in?
I sure did
I'm a fibreglass noob, found this really useful, thx for uploading ;)
Where did you get the fiberglass mat?
What resin did you use and what kind or weight of chop strand did you use?
Bare knees on chopped strand! That`s pretty hardcore
Were can I order this big pieces like this?
what is the mixing ratio you use to mix resin with hardener I mean like , do you go by the 10 drops to oz like it says in the can, cause it dries too fast when wixing 8 oz or more..
raul resto It depends on the brand. The junk from Home depot (elmers or bond) goes off quick no matter what you do. Each manufacturer will let you know what their optimal blend is.
Jay, what weight chop strand did you use for deck?
I thought you put 2 layers of CSM on the deck. So did you put a total of 3 ?
Nice job! I'm curious, why does a boat that's a 95 have a wood floor to begin with? I have a 95 Four Winns that is completely fiberglass. No wood at all. Seems strange that a big company like Sea Ray hadn't modernized their by designs by the 90's.
I think there is still wood under it, that is what I have seen before. The deck is just a liner backed by a wood deck and stringers. I might be wrong.
did u use polyester or epoxy resin?
Greg Scalamogna it has to be polyester to melt the adhesive in the csm.
Nice job bud. Well done.
Wait, you didn't finish your boating project?
what is that roller you are using.
So you used the gel-coat to over the last coat of resin. Did you add the wax to the gel-coat or was it pre-mixed with wax?
highvelocity123 Excellent question. I saw in another video where the guy added the wax portion during the gelcoat. After the matting/resin coat, he laid down a coat of primer for the gelcoat, then applied the final gelcoat with wax to harden it and ensure rock solid final product. Did you use marine ply or outdoor sheathing ?
A/B ply.
QUESTION.....DO YOU RESIN BOTH SIDES OF THE WOOD?
what is the mixing ratio you use to mix resin
What is on the back side of the marine wood you used? Is it sealed/painted in some way?
Resin
FriscoJarretts Thanks again. I'm curious as I see many different solutions out there...Resin seems to make sense.
Dude, you are an animal!!! NICE WORK!!!!
Did you do the bottom of the wood?
you do good work sir...unrelated to the deck but to you know a good site to get parts for pre alpha merc?
Make sure you go over to my website friscoboater . com and look at the complete blog. It has lots of pictures too, and will fill in some holes.
also you should use a steel roller to get all the air out
You did a bang up job!👍
What resin did u use? Im not sure if i should use epoxy or poly and how much i should buy. Slow or fast set? Thank you
Please watch this entire video. It will explain it all. There is an index on the video that will take you right to the discussion about resin. Please also watch the series from the beginning and I Go into great detail about mixing ratios.

What do you use to sand with?
I bought some plywood to use like you did in this video but it's wet with the chemicals the company uses to treat the wood. Do I have to let it dry out before I can glass over it?? Thanks for all your helpful videos you make. I'm restoring my boat also and watching your videos has helped so much.
M Watkins uh, yes, has to be dry. (Moisture content around 8-15%) won’t adhere/ and wood shrinks when it dries.
Where did you order the chop strand and the Resin mix?
You cant. You have to make it. Here is my video on how to make it th-cam.com/video/N3kmr9ZctUo/w-d-xo.html
Good work man well done.
How do you ever get that much resin down without it hardening before you get it down? You must have been moving LOL
if its cold where u are at boil water n put the rezin in a glass in the boiling water to heat the rezin
No just two. Is there a film screw up?
WHY would someone thumbs down these video's?
Hi Jay, thank you for the great videos. I am in the same situation with a 19' bow rider we just purchased. Do you recall how many total gallons of 105 resin you used?
Thank you Paul in Wisconsin.
Paul jetfxr it’s polyester resin not epoxy
This guy is my hero
so doing this you no longer have to worry about wood rotten?
I sure hope so.
im not sure if the bottom side is exposed, which would allow moisture in
Do you take questions via email? You've inspired me to try and fix this repair myself.
Hey jay ! Question ? How many gallons of poly did u use for the deck ? I just finished my stringers and about to start cutting my deck out next weekend .. first it would of been nice if you numbered your videos on this project... what year boat is this... why did you do all this work to begin with?
Don Williams If you go to my Chanel page you will see that there is a play list with everything in order.
@live4545 That will be cutting it close, but I think you might be ok.
Have you sold this boat? Hopefully you made some money on this one. Incredible rebuild.
I sure did. About two years ago.
