I don't know if your dealer guy ever told you why you are getting some corrosion or not. the reason your gimbal unit is getting some corrosion is because your anodes aren't working properly. as the propeller churns in the water, it creates a static discharge. the anodes are added so that they can properly dissipate that static discharge and keep your unit from corroding. make sure your anodes are contacting bare metal to metal contact and make sure you don't paint them or anything like that. you should seal them so they don't leak water, but again make sure they contact the bolts and make good metal to metal contact. you may even want to add extra anodes to your outdrive for extra protection for it as well. also make sure all your grounding cables are correctly placed and again make good metal to metal contact. you did a great job with your repair, but if your anodes and grounds were working properly, you should never have had to do this repair job. (just thought i'd throw in my two cents worth.) :-)
Completely enjoyed and learned from the three episodes you put out on the rebuild. Very informative and useful for me. Used it as sort of a video guide when I did mine. Thanks a million!!!
Hi Jay, Just wanted to say a big thank you for all your vids. They have been a massive help in my boat restoration and Im sure they continue to help me. Keep up the great work mate! thanks From Aus!
Marine shops do the hole rebuilt in about 4 hrs they have all the tools needed and clean up the inside you can paint the outside after if you want they do it every day "
I got a slide hammer very similar at Harbor Freight Tools. I tried a gear puller but you also need adapters and such to make it work. The slide hammer works great.
Where did you buy the stainless steel pin? I think you said in the video. Someone else's video recommended snap on tool part number 7M6A for the flex work unless you have another source. I think your video is very good and has great details.
Big favor, about the 13:30 mark you state that you need to adjust the trim sender by starting in the "middle" and get your engine running. I would like to make sure I don't damage the U joint by over trimming where the limit should cut off and also get accurate gauge readings. I can not find any info on this process could you explain this any further it would be greatly appreciated as I will be looking at replacing my sender and limit switch in the near future. Thank you so much Great Job
Hey man I'm about to this is exact thing replacing the transom seal that is and is there a torque spec on the transom housing and if so where can I get that info from? And great job on the boat I've watched a lot of the videos of you working on it!!!
I was curious if there is an easy way to put the 3/4" oil hose back on? Can I take the white plastic piece off that the hose was originally attached to?
How hard was this? I am very mechanical so I'm not worried about not understanding it. I guess I'm mostly worried about the special tools and fitting my big hands into tiny places. What special tools will I need? The job I am trying to do is replace the gimbal bearing, bellows and seals on a 1995 alpha one Gen 2 lower unit. I have realized that I have to order the hinge pin tool so I'll get that. What else though? Also, while I'm in there should I replace the lower unit shift cable? Thank you for your help.
What I meant by on was the ignition. You should never trim your outdirve up while running. With the ignition on you scan see the gauge, and make adjustments.
When replacing the u-joint bellows I have not found in any manual, video or blog online that provides clear and exact instructions explaining where the external lip of the bellows (bell housing end) should be placed into the bell housing prior to inserting the sleeve.being more specific, where does the sleeve rest once pushed into the bellows? Should the lip on the bellows be pulled into the bell housing past the groove in the bell housing or does the lip on bellows go into the groove on housing? OR.. Is the groove provided in bell housing for where the outer edge of the retaining sleeve should rest once pushed into the bellows past the lip ?
@FriscoJarretts yeah, and especially at the rate things break these days.. im sure you will. haha. good luck with the boat, im gunna be getting a 91 sea ray 170 br., and im sure i will be asking questions about things if it's alright with you. haha
Hi Frisco! What a great job! I have a questions for you. What epoxy and hardener did you use? I like the finish and thats what I want my outdrive to look like. Thanks and outstanding work!
I need help please.. my alignment tool does not pass the gimbal bearing.. on the old one?? I got the new one and haven't installed it but it won't go through either.. I have a feeling it's going to do the same thing once I installed it or it should go right through..

Thanks for sharing this Frisco! My dad tore his down and got busy so my mom made him drop it off to me to assemble. This vid helps!
fantastic job on your 3 rebuild video series here..... thank you very much

I really look forward to these videos. Thanks for taking the time to post them.
Who knew boating could be so much fun!
at 10:42 the gear oil hose nipple actually slides straight out making it much much easier to install the hose :)

Good friend. Today I went to the sea with my mercrusier and water got into the boat through the lower unit. What do you think it is? Thanks
Amazing 3 videos. Full help for me doing exactly that. There is not a part 4?
at 12:15 the sleeve installation tool fits on to the engine alignment tool
thanks friscoboater, these videos have been very helpful
Goof job 😉

There is a lip that makes it very hard to do while on the bench. The boat acts like a second set of hands to hold it still.
I am in Frisco Texas. I would need to see a video of it before I could tell you anything.

Is there a shaft seal behind (boat side) the gimbal bearing that has to be replaced before you put the new bearing back in?

With every thing you replaced how much did you spend? Just parts not paint. I'm considering doing this job myself on my alpha one.
Yes sir. Most people stop after tearing it down.
Autozone. It is a pully puller, and I just flipped the jaws around.
Your videos are great! Thoroughly enjoy watching as well as your commentary. What do you do for a living?

@CMMarineTech
Don't think so. It is merc lube
Would powder coat stick obviously after sand blasting?
Wait you didn’t show where you took the assembly off or put it on. Did I miss something? That is the meat of the matter
@m4master100
Your welcome. I just need to find something else to do after this is done.
Hi Frisco! What a great job! I have a questions for you. What epoxy and hardener did you use? I like the finish and thats what I want my outdrive to look like. Thanks and outstanding work!
Great video! How much does it take to put the ring in with that plastic tool you show? Thanks

@CMMarineTech
This stuff is a very light colored green.
@blackatlanta No, but I have done this since I was in high school.

Rebuilding alpha 1
How many hours and/or years should you perform this rebuild ??
Thanks

nice job... are you a mechanic by trade?
I think Frisco had dark hair when he started this project :-)
Yup!
69k views on the re-assembly vid! Mabye b/c its the only one out there, in a sea of tear-down vids.
Skipped the tough parts. “Here’s what I did earlier”
