Great job, looks fantastic and awesome save there! I love how you guys shared what went wrong and how you have the perseverance to push ahead! That my friends is what boat building is all about, these experiences are making you guys pros! Cheers to a great video and end result!
Thank you brother! Since this is our first time, we’re bound to screw up! 😂 I figured we might be able to spare people some mistakes of their own. Channels like yours inspire us and many others to get out there and do what we’re passionate about! If anyone’s reading this follow DIY WATERWORLD for some entertaining and wild boating and building adventures! 🍻
Thanks for showing what went wrong, why you think it went wrong and what you did to fix it. This is far more useful than someone who pretends it went perfectly.
Thank you for that! I knew very little then about gel coat and cure times. And I’m still learning. I keep making mistakes but I do my best to show where I went wrong so others learn from it! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🛥️🤙🌊
You don't know how much I appreciate showing mistakes. We're all human. Sometimes we get in a hurry or just overly eager and have to work backwards a little. 👍
You’re very welcome Dwight! The reality is that most things you see online have tons of mistakes that never get shown. And me being a newb makes me overly eager like you said and impatient sometimes. But I don’t Mind showing my screw ups so people can learn from my mistakes! 🤙
You guys might not be professional boat builders, but man you’ve done an awesome job restoring the deck. Grady White is a heck of a boat and built like a tank. Restoration is going beautifully well so far. Can’t wait to see the final product. Like to know at the end a $ amount of amount spent not including labor. Total cost of the restoration project.?????
Hey Jorge! We are still working on her as we use her. We stayed doing the topside already, we’re getting ready to shoot the gunnels with gel coat and redo the gel coat on the floor last. Once we’re done we’re gonna make a longer video of all the work with a breakdown of all the cost. So far it’s been about 15k in parts and supplies including the boat itself, 23k for the motor. As far as labor goes…I have no idea lol🤙🌊🛥️
Nice! How’d it turn out? I’m about to do a nonskid job with paint for the first time on an outboard bracket. I’m starting to like paint better than gelcoat! Thanks for the comment Ray! 🤙
@@perfectfitboating That’s not silicone. That is polyurethane with a cyanoacrylate component. Silicone doesn’t belong anywhere near a boat except ‘maybe’ ‘rarely’ bedding glass to fiberglass or metal.
So got the weather to glaze radar bar holes. So gathered my nerves, and finally put a coat of USC Glaze over the small holes in my radar bar. Started a little shaky cause I mixed a large batch ( bout a 3" puddle) and it kicked quicker than I expected. So mixed up smaller batches and it worked out so much better. Knocked down some of the excess after setting so it's not as time consuming when I finalize for gel coating... Almost there brother!!!!!
Bad ass! In this weather it’s always best to do smaller batches. I try to keep any type of resin batches to 8oz or less. Just kicks too fast. I’ve even thought about placing the resin in a cooler with ice right before mixing so I have a longer working time. Send pics so we can see!🤙
Whatever can go wrong… WILL!!! 😂 My new slogan for the boat is “Nothings easy”! Because when something has to be fixed it’s never a quick easy fix. It’s always 5 times longer and 5 times more expensive! 🙄 thanks for the comment! 🍻
Wassup brother. Even though it's a year old, I appreciate your honesty. Your facial expression is so sincere that it makes me think the freegin dog died or you screwed up a clients boat. The inspiration continues. 👍💪
🤣🤣🤣 yeah that sucked. Worked so hard to prep it and I screwed it up lol but you live and learn. We’re about to do the floor again anyway. This time, the right way! 🤙
@aeroscout8409 yes, mar pro is a company that rebrands alot of different marine products. I saw them pop up at a local shop like a year ago maybe more. I don’t know what product they’re rebranding though. We’ve used FGCI gelcoat from the beginning and have had great success. We just used it today actually to fair part of the floor of a transom we’re working on. Check out our instagram you can see it there. I’ve sprayed it, rolled and brushed it and it’s awesome!
Hey Bret! Thanks for the comment! My setup was a fairly cheap one off Amazon. Depending on where you are you have to work fairly quick if it’s hot. And if you don’t you’ll have to throw the gun away. Seeing as this was my second time spraying and I’d probably screw up, a cheaper style gun made sense for me. That being said, I used a 2.3mm nozzle (for shooting gelcoat it needs to be a bigger size than standard sizes) I sprayed at 50 psi and I have a chiller I use to keep water out of the gun. You can probably get away with a small water separator attachment. It lays down ok. I’ve also learned that mixing gelcoat with duratec lays down gelcoat with the finish of paint and you can use a smaller size nozzle. I’d look into that if I was you. Hope that helped! Thank you for the sub brotha!🙌🍻
I don't mean to be a past but wouldn't it be easier to add the non skid to the gel coat stir it good with a drll mixer. Then catalyze it ar 2% and roll it on. It's non skid bro. You can just roll it on . Spray the stuff that isn't non skid.
No es pintura es gelcoat. La arena se compra en diferente gruesuras y si puede mezclar con el gelcoat antes de aplicar. No se adonde estás localizado pero en Amazon se vende o en una tienda marino local. 🍻

I get that, and it's very admirable however I hate seeing the hard work and talent put to a style of boat that strays so far from my tastes. Had I the money, youth and health my choice would be a wooden New England side trawler. That aside I'm limited to my 1976 USCG Webber's Cove motor whaleboat. Anyway good job and best of luck.

All gel coat layer was used with waxed gel coat ?
No. Unwaxed then waxed for the final coat.
Should have just mixed the non skid I the gel coat or paint and rolled it on. Much more uniform and embedded
Right about that! Thanks for the comment! 🍻
A lawn seed spreader works really good for adding non skid.
That’s a pretty awesome idea!🤙
How did you get your gelcoat to cure outdoors in an uncontrolled environment?
By adding the right amount of MEK.
@perfectfitboating is more better outdoors??
It’ll cure outdoors or indoors
I don't mean to be a past but wouldn't it be easier to add the non skid to the gel coat stir it good with a drll mixer. Then catalyze it ar 2% and roll it on. It's non skid bro. You can just roll it on . Spray the stuff that isn't non skid.
Yeah that’s one way to do it. But I wanted complete and even coverage of the entire deck. Can’t really do that rolling it on.

I was thinking about doing this to my deck but maybe it'll be easier to just stick some nonestick mats
That’s definitely easier! I would try that before attempting to get messy with gel coat or paint. See if it works for you! That’s a great idea! 🤙🌊🛥️
