I'm a visual learner, so I love watching the ATK videos, especially the Gingerbread Cake. I know a ginger lover whose birthday is in August, so a frosting that doesn't weep, and an impressive-looking cake that is as simple to make as a batch of muffins and is full of punchy ginger flavour? I'm sold! Next special occasion/birthday cake ... found.
I made the Gingerbread layered cake today, (November 24, 2021) for Thanksgiving. It was a hit. I surprised myself. Everyone loved it. Now, it will be a hit forever. Thank you.
I forgot about that, my mom made it back in the 1970s. Must have had the recipe in a magazine, I can still taste it, now I know how to make it myself after all these years!!!
I love my electric kettle that you see in British shows. It boils very quickly so when I want to cook something on the stove like green beans I fill it and then pour the boiling water into the pot. Saves me some time.
Both look absolutely decadent! I will definitely be finding the recipes. I have a gingerbread recipe that uses ginger powder, fresh grated ginger and crystallized ginger. I think I might just try adding a little cocoa powder the next time I make it!
My grandmother used to make the most delicious date nut cake. I think I'll give your version a try -- I still have her pudding molds to use! However, since what I loved about it was that it wasn't very sweet, I'll skip the toffee sauce. She just sprinkled hers with a little powdered sugar which looked inviting but added little extra sugar. Thanks!
*THANK YOU* for the sticky toffee pudding recipe! It's so nice to find a recipe for this that doesn't call for treacle or even molasses - both of which are impossible to find in my little tiny town. Finally I can try this! 👏👏👏
What is browning if I might ask? All the references I can find are about the Maillard reaction and browning meat, but surely you can't mean that with a gingerbread cake.
@@davejones5747 Sorry to reply to this after 7 months, but I think LinusLarrabee might be referring to gravy browning. It's a liquid made from molasses, caramel, and spices, and it's mainly used to, well, make gravy look browner. I'm sure it would work well with cakes too.
@Jeff, the God of Biscuits ohhhh theyre a bit richer and deeper in flavor. They are a bit spicier too. Im not a fan if spicy, but i do love these cookies!! Theyre hard to describe.
@Jeff, the God of Biscuits lol. Check is in the mail. Haha!! Hope you find them. Theyre arent the most popular cookie, but i am confident that it will be worth the effort! Would be wonderful if Americas Test Kitchen would record a video making them. Fingers crossed!!
Archway still makes those cookies I think. Taste is similar to black liquorice but more peppery. The Archway cookies are rolled in powdered sugar, but there used to be another brand that had something like a royal icing that got a little crunchy. They were great but I have not seen them in years.
I am making this cake for my husband’s birthday. But when I made the first batch using 1 1/3 cup per pan there was only enough batter for a scant cup in each of the other layers. If I make this again I will use only a cup and 2 tbsp batter per pan or I will bake Two layers and slice them. What might I have done wrong to have too little batter?
My very favorite is called Spanish Bar cake. It’s moist and spicy with raisins and topped with vanilla frosting. I believe it’s baked in a large 9”x12” cake pan and cut into four 3” wide bars. Can you help me find a recipe for this delicious spicy cake? Thank you so much.
It's many years later, but if you put "Spanish bar cake" (include the quote marks) and the word raisins into your favorite search engine, a ton of hits will come up.
Can I use rum flavouring as I am a recovering alcoholic and don’t drink any alcohol 🍷 thank you! And I will be making that delicious gingerbread recipe!
I think they sound like they'll be awesome without rum, if I ever find my ramekins I'll be giving it a go with no rum. How can you go wrong with covered in toffee sauce? :)
I do like that you are putting a price limit, but I would love to know what the ultimate pot or appliance is at all costs, but then breaking them into price brackets.
Sticky toffee pudding is usually served with vanilla custard (which is creme anglaise), lol, trying to make sticky toffee pudding sound fancy - it's an everyman desert, ain't nothing fancy about it, but it's delicious. How are stove top kettles still a thing, electric ones are so much faster, cost about the same and are generally easier to fill. Can't imagine living in a house without an electric kettle
Please do an episode on egg replacement for kids with severe egg allergy. The Egg Replacement you buy at the store hurts their tummies. Please! Please! Please! Help
The Gingerbread Layer Cake: I can revise this to make an Organic version. WOW that's way too much sweetener! I can revise that too. 3 Sticks of Butter in the Icing? I'll have to dial that back too.
Someone has made an editorial decision to cut back on the usual "looks good" / "sounds good" interjections in favour of more intelligent exchanges. It is an excellent discipline! And both recipes look fantastic, especially the ginger layer cake.
Wish this was sugar free, really wish you could do a season for diabetics. We see recipes , then try to use sugar free sweet but butter will not whip rite .
Sugar is only part of the problem with these dessert items. You could see a blood sugar spike from the flour and other inflammation and negative heath effects from the vegetable oils. If you want to work toward improving blood sugar control, start watching Dr. Eric Berg and Dr. Ken Berry videos.
It's OK if you're used to it. I stopped using caffiene a few years ago, but a couple of times I've consumed some accidentally though, and I was bouncing off the walls.

I absolutely HAVE to make the ginger cake...oh my.

That’s the frosting my grandma always uses on red velvet❤️🥰
I'm an Englishman and I approve the sticky toffee pudding! Brings back memories!
Bridget and Julia are awesome! I would love to cook in the kitchen with those two....😉
That cake is the best! I've made that recipe so many times. 😋
Bridget and Keith are my one true ship and you can't convince me otherwise.
Sticky toffee pudding is my all time favorite! I will be giving this version a go.
The best! Let us know how you like it.

that ginger cake sounds very interesting. And I've never heard of that type of frosting but it sounds excellent. Thank you for sharing.

Welp, I saved this video to my “cooking” file! Yummmmmmmmm!
Thanks for your comment, I had no idea I could create my own files till I read this. I just created my own COOKING file.
You had me at sticky toffee pudding! Oh yeah baby!

Ermine frosting is THE BEST lol! So velvety and creamy... not too sweet. Try it! Well worth it.
Those cakes all look amazing! I absolutely love 5his channel.
GREAT GINGERBREAD RECIPE ! Incredible icing...Good update on Toffee pudding. Thank you. RMH/Ohio
I’ve always used that frosting on red velvet. I believe this is the original recipe. It’s a strange recipe but it’s delicious.
I love each of those pastry dishes and their recipes and have to try making that cake first.
Happy Baking!
Date-Walnut- Applesauce cake. Yum Yum Yum Yum
Ginger and toffee ! Great episode! Two of the best! Can't wait to try these!!!
Looks amazing!! I’ve never seen this type of ermine frosting. I’ll try it! And sticky toffee puddings sound awesome 😎
Thank you so much!
Browning is an excellent substitute for the cocoa. It also gives it a cleaner and less chocolate-like taste. 🍰🏆

I don't think they mean cooking it til it's browner, although I don't know exactly what they mean either.

I'd have my hands full in that kitchen 😋

How would that sauce be if you added some warm spices, like cinnamon and a dash of cayenne?
Probably better!
Their hair is perfect it doesn't move

Can I dive thru the screen, save some for me, lux!
Is the coffee strong or regular?
Can someone tell me how to substitute with THE DATE LADY's Date Paste?
Would you please make a video how to bake in Breville toaster oven
Is there any way to skip the coffee?
Yuummmmmm!!!!!!
Yum!
Seeing as it has to cool for 2 hours, shouldn't you start with the pudding mixture before making the cake batter?
I do like that you are putting a price limit, but I would love to know what the ultimate pot or appliance is at all costs, but then breaking them into price brackets.
Is that the same thing as boiled milk frosting? I've never had either.
It’s ermine frosting. (Aka boiled milk frosting) th-cam.com/video/k0pzdPNXFgs/w-d-xo.html
Mmmmmmmm Keith
Are these recipes in the book?
When making the ginger cake, why not bake two larger layers and then split each one with a large knife?
thicker layers of the thin batter would not bake as evenly
Russ thanks!! I had the same question
I really wanted to see them transfer the cake from the cardboard disk to the cake stand.
But I don't imbibe coffee per religious beliefs... Should I use more cocoa powder?

for the stick toffee pudding, should you have used date syrup (Silan), instead of the brown sugar, it is a healthier option.
While I'm sure it would add flavor, how would a glucose and fructose syrup be any healthier than brown sugar?
Date syrup is not widely available
The last time I tried to blitz dates in my food processor (kitchenaid by the way), I broke the machine.
Did not have any pits.
I can't fathom why the Hario was lumped together with these giant sized teapots. lol.
The pot from Hario is for coffee brewing obviously. It sounds a bit odd to watch the comparison between items created for a bit different purposes.
Anyone else curious what the "I'll see you later *eyebrow raise*" thing at the end is all about?
Hmmmmmmm........no comment.
I always think it's kind of creepy.
They have a new catchphrase at the end now. People got weirded out over this one apparently.

You CANNOT put coffee in recipes. There are those of us who know caffeine is not just poison, but also has the effects of an amphetamine.
It's OK if you're used to it. I stopped using caffiene a few years ago, but a couple of times I've consumed some accidentally though, and I was bouncing off the walls.

Caffeine is poisonous? AND has amphetamine effects? Source please.
I never never never refrigerate a cake. It changes the flavor. Cakes shoukd be made and ready to eat. Unless you have very unusual ingrediants.
