I'm letting my son feel his pain, it pains me also. I feel he's also suicidal so my fears are terror. I'm physically sick with worry and sadness, never thought this would be my life.

Bobbie, I am so so sorry for the pain you must be experiencing. I would like to offer a little solution that will help you feel better. Here is my life's work in the book, Unhooked: How to Help an Addicted Loved One Recover. unhooked.brickhouserecovery.com/

Bobbie, I am there right now. I am scared he will hurt himself but also so mad at his choices. All I do is check on him everyday and cry. I feel your pain.

@Donna Kaye I'm also sorry you're experiencing this pain. You repeat and repeat to nothing but false promises. I literally sound like a broken record. He knows what he needs to do he knows he's ill, I can only pray he strong enough to overcome this existing not living. I now say you know what I feel. you know what you need to do. I'll be here for you every step of the way. I hope before tragedy strikes he will get help. There is no way getting them committed, nor is there any support or help unless they make the choice. My God keep them safe here with us. Good luck to you

I too feel anxiety over my son. He is in a rehab at this time and should be discharged soon. This time he cannot come back to the house. I am working so am keeping busy. He comes into my thoughts and it is painful. I think about how he was before he became this. He was supposed to be better than this. I still do not know what brought this on. I do know that I am his mother and I tried to help, but I could not. damn alcohol, social media, cell phone apps to buy liquor.

My brother was a moderate drinker until he started a relation with his gf. He started consuming excessive alcohol and food, resulted in rapid weight gain. Not only health issues, moral issues showing up such as making parents pay for what he purchased online. My parents still respect him as an independent adult and letting him go, but always worry about him because his life style & health condition remind them of my grandfather who became bedridden in his early 40s.

One of the hardest things is that he has 50/50 custody of his 2 year old daughter:-( I am hoping to get my husband to watch this.

It was very brave and hard for your parents, and thank god for you and them, this strategy worked. Do you think some people will just not be helped, whether due to personal choice or incapacity to help themselves. Our son has lost his business, his home and his children. We are helping him with a place to live, and although he has started to work again, it’s two steps forward and a few more backwards....we are at a complete loss....it is the fear and the guilt to let him go completely, which stops us.

Hi, my son is an alcoholic that works in construction and lives in a sober living facility. He's been doing this for over 5 years. I've let him live this hard life excepting him to turn things around when he became so uncomfortable with his situation but it's never come and he's just getting worse. The 24 yr old is the alcoholic and his step dad kicked him out today for coming home drunk again after he promised a week or 2 ago he wouldn't do it again under the warning of getting kicked out the next time. My heart feels like it's being ripped out and my gut is in knots. His stuff is still here because he hasn't found anywhere to go yet. I need direction with my adult alcoholic son. He lost a very good job due to his drinking. He just had an arbitration hearing g for that job and could very possibly get it back. But today he has been drinking. I don't understand why. I want to understand why. In a time that he should be trying to stay away from alcohol, he is drinking. Why? And even more important, what should we do?

My family needs help. My mother needs help . My younger brother is 49 years old and has been alcoholic for decades . My mother has always been permissive of anything he does including letting him get drunk to the point where he’s falling all over the place . He gets drunk at 9am in my mother’s house when I talk to her about this incorrigible behavior , all she does is yell At me and tells me “to leave her alone “ or “ I don’t want to talk about it” . I instantly become the bad guy every time . She yells at me for saying I don’t want my children to be around this behavior . Im not sure who’s worse my brother or my mother who lives in perpetual denial . Should I just leave them alone and let them live in dysfunctional bliss?

My older brother has cirrhosis…he has been to rehab 5 times all paid by our father but it’s never worked he’d go back to drinking. Just 3 weeks ago, his wife finally kicked him out of their place after he refused to help her pay the mortgage and spend his money buying alcohol. He had my cousin drive him 433miles to my parent’s house because no one wanted him at their place….now he is at home with no job but he somehow buying alcohol and getting drunk everyday at the house, my father doesn’t know what to do with him. He refuses to believe he has cirrhosis and keeps trying to schedule appointments with different doctors just to be told the same thing. My brother says it’s from my father abandoning him after he got married to my mother, dad didn’t abandoned him, his mom took him away from dad and wouldn’t let him see my brother. My mother left my older brother in a different country just to come to America and yet my brother never felt abandoned and he doesn’t even drink and him and my mom are very close. We told my brother that we will send him to rehab if he wants to be helped but if it fails again then we will have no choice but to kick him out into the streets..both my parents are old and retired and they can’t be taking care of care of him forever he is 45years old and no one in the entire family wants him…..if my boyfriend agrees, we could let him stay with us but he’d need to get a job and have his paycheck given to us so he won’t use any of that money to buy alcohol…we’d send the check to his wife to help with their kids

First, I want to thank you for taking the time to share your story and be vulnerable. Its hard, especially when you are close to someone struggling. There are so many things that you guys can do to help yourselves in this time of need. Maybe see if you want to attend a Alanon meeting, or even check out the book Jason wrote, its called "Unhooked." I have attatched a link below.

Is he ok now? My brother is in a similar situation. I know it is fun to drink with gf who also likes to drink, but it's too often & too much. I hardly recognized him when I saw his selfie recently as his face was bloated and looked sick. He wasn't like that last summer but changed so badly in 6 months.

I don't know about letting you sleep on the street I've seen so many homeless that started like you and their parents let them just like your mom. The difference is that you got an epiphany not everyone gets one. I would still help my son get into recovery or something but let him leave on the street.
